Architect Chris Dyson, along with owner Oliver Chanarin, has restored and repaired a Grade II listed Georgian home in a Conservation Area in Spitalfields, London as well as shaping it to create enough living accommodation for two parts of the same family to live close to each other. The existing one-roof deep house has been restored and extended, while a new dwelling has been created in the courtyard by turning former stables into a charming cottage.

Ian Scott Watson has designed a remarkable one-off home for private clients in the Scottish Highlands. The home, which sits on the site of a country house demolished in the 1970s, uses the surviving tower as inspiration for its Baronial style. The new home makes the most of the views and is built out of timber frame with a blockwork outer shell, onto which harling has quite literally been thrown to give a solid, rough finish. The interiors draw on a range of antique fittings to give visitors the impression that this new home has been on the site for centuries. The house cost 950,000 ( 1,727/m2) to build over 18 months.

A real DIY self-build is how John Price describes his and Jill s four year project to build a traditional style home on the site of a former Colt bungalow in a pretty Cambridgeshire village. John took on 95% of the project himself on a DIY basis, including demolishing the existing bungalow, laying the beam and block floors, all the blockwork, installing the windows and internal fittings such as the kitchen, flooring and even staircase, which he made himself. The result is a beautiful traditional East Anglian design with black shiplap cladding and a large farmhouse style kitchen, which opens onto the private patio through sliding doors. The project cost 126,000 ( 455/m2)

Irena took on a poorly-converted former cartshed and, through a programme of remodelling, refurbishment and extension has created a charming, unique home that is packed full of light. Most important to the scheme was a single storey extension that has created an L-shaped floorplan. This has opened up the interior thanks to the introduction of sliding doors and an impressive glass structure from Apropos and there is now a free flow between the key living spaces, helped enormously by the vaulted ceilings. The project has been sensitively detailed and the resulting courtyard is now enjoyed from all parts of this very private house. The project cost 195,000 ( 1,083/m2) and took 15 months to complete.

Gail and David formed a separate plot in the garden of their former home in an exclusive part of Cornwall and have built a light-filled, contemporary energy-efficient home with great views and which suits their needs perfectly. The site posed many difficulties for the owners, not least having to stabilise an unsafe rock wall with metal pins at the rear of the site, and drilling two 75m boreholes into the underlying rock. Gail and David found it a great retirement project, incorporating many energy-efficient measures from triple glazing to an ingenious imported system that recovers the heat from waste shower water and reuses it to heat the home. The project cost 640,000 ( 3,282/m2) and took 13 months.

Sometimes unloved homes just need someone with a bit of vision and it was Shaun Beverley who could see the potential in a 1970s detached home on a secluded plot that no-one seemed to be interested in buying. Shaun understood that the design of homes in the 1970s has many parallels with those built today big, light rooms and strong rooflines and set about a programme of restoration, refurbishment and improvement that has resulted in an achingly stylish home. Shaun has fully embraced the 1970s interiors down to the leopard-skin wallpaper and created a chic, fun home that all of a sudden makes you think twice about unfashionable houses in your own area. Shaun spent 190,000 ( 883/m2) on the project.
