Some of you may be using a site like Facebook or MySpace as your main page. Mine is often just blank (on purpose), but when I do use one, it s the Mac page on Alltop. This is a Website that launched a few months ago, and is largely funded by our friend Guy Kawasaki. The idea behind Alltop is to really aggregate top resources and collections of information into a consice format, and target it to a specific audience. My homepage is set to the Mac section, as I mentioned. Just guess what s on there? There s links to Mac news, Mac Websites, and even Mac programs. It s a great way to get the latest news from several places at once. If you hover your mouse over one of the story links, you ll get a small preview box with the beginning of the article in it. When Guy first started talking about this, there were some naysayers. They didn t see the point of it. However, I think it s great. I like it so much, it s my home page. What else is there to say? I haven t had any issues or problems with it whatsoever. They ve done an excellent job with it so far. They re constantly launching new divisions of the site, such as the Mac page I use. We help you explore your passions by collecting stories about “all the topics” on the web. We’ve grouped these collections — “aggregations” — into individual Alltop sites based on topics such as environment, photography, science, Muslim, celebrity gossip, military, fashion, gaming, sports, politics, automobiles, and Macintosh. At each Alltop site, we display the headlines of the latest stories from dozens of sites and blogs. You can think of an Alltop site as a “digital magazine rack” of the Internet. To be clear, Alltop sites are starting points—they are not destinations per se. The bottom line is that we are trying to enhance your online reading by both displaying stories from the sites that you’re already visiting and helping you discover sites that you didn’t know existed. I want to show you something that is really interesting on the keyboard. Can you see this? Look closely at the keys. When I press the Shift key, the letters and numbers shown on the keyboard change to their Shift equivalents. Isn t that kinda nice? Or, let s say you re thinking to yourself I can barely see that font . You really want me to make it a little bigger for you? I can do that if I want to! You can change the font size on your keyboard, bold the text on the keyboard, and even change the entire font altogether. You can do this either for certain keys, or the entire keyboard. You can even change the color of the backlighting to pretty much any color in the spectrum. The main features of this amazing keyboard are: Revolutionary Keyboard Features a tiny OLED screen on each key. 113 screens total. I turned off the lights in my office so all of you could see a bit better. I did this to show you a feature even better. The images that display on the OLED screens under the keys can be modal. For instance, right now I don t have an image programmed for my space bar. I set the software up so that when I m in the Finder, there are different layers that will show up automatically. See? I can use the space bar for quick view at this moment. It also will light up keys, corresponding to different layers of things that I can do and open. If Caps Lock is turned on with Finder in the foreground, the color swatch across the entire keyboard changes. Now that you ve seen the functionality of what the Optimus Maximus can do, you re about to find a World s First are you ready for it? Do you see the little icon? You ve officially been RickRolled from a keyboard. See him dancing? Yeah, baby, that s what I m talking about. That s the Optimus Maximus from ThinkGeek. I FINALLY have gotten an Optimus Maximus keyboard, courtesy of ThinkGeek. I am completely stoked, since I ve wanted this thing for like EVER. I managed to let it sit on my desk all day, and build anticipation. People in chat ended up being as impatient and excited as I was for the unboxing. Time to take a second mortgage on your home or break into your kid s college fund. With the singing of angels and a ray of sunlight parting the clouds, the fabled Optimus Maximus Keyboard has descended from Russian design studio Art Lebedev like an orgasm of geekiness. As you should know by now this amazing keyboard features a tiny screen on each key that s 113 screens in all. What can you do with these tiny screens, you ask? Well, each key can change its image dynamically depending on what you re doing. Hold down SHIFT and all keys go uppercase. Run Photoshop and you can set it so each hotkey has an image representing its function. Set a key to monitor your CPU usage or display what iTunes track you are currently playing. You can make a key into a tiny clock with moving hands and play animated gif files or even quicktime movies. Of course all this futuristic technology is going to cost you a pretty penny but we figure you ll just expense the Optimus and tout its incredible increased efficiency when using PowerPoint hotkeys in your expense report summary. This thing is just fricken AWESOME. From day one, I wanted this keyboard. Now that I have it, I m in Geek Heaven. Every key is a separate screen. Look how shiny it is!!!! The keys don t feel awesome, but that s not the point. It ll fit really well front and center on my desk. After much hard work, I finally got the power run behind my desk, and was able to turn the keyboard on. Look at the secksay purple lights backlighting every key. The coolest thing is when it was plugged in. Before being plugged in, the keys on the keyboard had the Windows key, CTRL key, etc on it. You know, native Windows keys. However, when I plugged it in, it immediately recognized that I was using a Mac. Those Windows keys changed over to Mac keys!!! How fricken cool is that?! The OLEDs aren t actually on the keys, they re under it. Don t worry, you ll get to see much more of my amazing new keyboard in upcoming videos. When I got an email from Alex the other day, I had to check it out. It s a Freeware app for Mac OS X that will allow you to generate your own title sequence for your own Star Wars fan work. Maybe you re doing a Brickfilm, or a Star Wars fan film. This is going to be the easiest way you ll be able to generate the imagry for it. Star Wars Title Sequence Generator (or simply SWTSG) is simple to use, and creates excellent looking finished products for you. SWTSG is a free Mac app that will help you to easily generate the visual portion of the Star Wars title sequence. So you’re making a Star Wars fanfilm, and you want that authentic-looking, opening yellow text scroll? Plus all the other nice frills that go along with it? You’ve googled the internet for tutorials that show you how to do those things, but it seemed like a lot of hard work, using expensive software packages that you didn’t want to buy? And even then the results were a little bit less-than-authentic looking? At ease, my fellow Jedi! The Force is with you. And out of that puddle of goo comes some pink puss. Ok, so I made that up. Basically this is a Flip Book Application for the iPhone. You may remember that recently I reviewed a similar App, called the FlickBook. This one costs $10.00, compared to $5.00 for the FlickBook. Now, you may be already asking whether double the price is worth it. I m here to tell you, it is. The tool set that comes with FlipBook is just awesome. Drawing hand held animation gets easier, and more fun using FlipBook on the iPhone. FlipBook makes it easy to create colorful animations with your fingertips, and share them with your friends and family. Getting started is easy, simply download the $9.99 application from the app store and start animating. Use anything from eraser to onion skinning to layered drawing. Draw on top of images from your photo album including images taken with your iPhone’s camera. Touch play when you’re ready to see how your movie looks, and use the accelerometer to control how fast your movie plays then upload it to flipbook.tv and share it with everyone. FlipBook puts animation into your hands. FlipBook has easy to use drawing controls and is available for iPhone and iPod Touch. Thank you, so much. I really appreciate it! Teleport is a VNC application that impressed me from the first time I started playing with it. It quickly picked up servers (machines with VNC running) throughout my local network. I only had to add one manually, and that one is on a completely separate network. He says that he sent me the money to review this to see if it s worth the money or not. When launched, Teleport will scan your network and find any machines on which you ve enabled sharing you can then select the proper machine, enter the password, and save that connection for future use. Once connected to a machine, you ll find that Teleport can display all of that machine s displays, and display them at their full resolution. You can rotate the screen horizontally, and use the usual iPhone gestures to zoom in or out on the display. Beyond zooming, though, Teleport offers a full suite of gestures to do those things you d do on a Mac or PC. A two-finger tap is a right-click; drag is a double-tap, followed by a drag motion; move scroll bars with two-finger vertical swipes; send the Left and Right Arrow keys with a two-fingered horizontal swipe. If you need to really work with remote machines, Teleport is a worthwhile investment, even with its current issues of occasional lockups or crashes. The way you use gestures for control is intuitive, the ability to position your finger away from the mouse cursor greatly helps with usability, the local-echo keyboard reduces typing errors, and the overall interface just feels very well thought out and works well. Add in the auto-discovery of servers, and you ve got a winning application even with the steep admission price for those who need to really work with remote machines on their iPhone or iPod touch. If you have a need to have this program, I would wait for a bit until another version is released. I have a very good idea that this will quickly be updated to work out the bugs and crashes. The built-in iSight camera and microphone are integrated so neatly you barely notice they’re there — until you need them for a video chat. So once I get it all out of the box, I was happy to see a wireless keyboard, and the Mighty Mouse that I love using so much. It s always fun to unbox Apple products! I know everyone wants me to plug this thing in. It s a 24 model, and was not easy to get out of the box, believe it or not. I love the design of the iMac. It s very clean and uncluttered. She found out that the Food Network channel is on here, and Paula Deen just happened to be showing at that time. We may have lost her for awhile, y all. She s quite addicted to the lovely Paula. You want to make your photos more fun. We ve talked before about Websites and software in the past that can make your photos more fun, including this one I want to show you today. Primps allows you to have fun with your pictures. Upload your picture (or link to it from somewhere on the Web), add some text bubbles and crazy objects, then save your image. There s nothing to sign up for, nor pay for. You don t need to create a login, nor even use your email address. There are several different things you can tweak and play with to edit your image, and make it be the best it can be. Now you know where you can go to do some quick text additions to a photo. Yeah, you could load it into your image editor. However, it s easier to just go to Primps and save it out. I just showed you how easy it is. It doesn t get simpler than this. What more do you want? Some of you may use answering services, such as Yahoo Answers. Thanks to ScottyG for sending in this top ten list on ways to get good answers from Yahoo. It may sound strange, but do not make the title too descriptive. If the title is too descriptive, many people will not even open the question to take a look at it. Almost all of my most answered questions have titles which are not overly descriptive. Spelling goes a long way. It is much easier to read a correctly spelled question than one with spelling and grammatical errors. Do not include huge chunks of conversation in your question. Keep it informative but informal. I recommend using bullet points and a summary of the question. This is an easy-to-read format. Look for answers with good sources . Remember, Wikipedia can be edited by anyone so it is not always true. Do not use the add details option to have a chat with answerers. Many questions end up with a flood of added details. Don t put a quick 10 points in the question or title. If you do this, you will get a lot of short, rushed comments rather than longer, detailed answers. Do not post the same post many times in a short period of time. The Yahoo community WILL ignore your question if you do this! Do not put title says it all in the question. Questions can seem quite ambiguous on the Internet, so further details will be needed. As soon as you have the answer, pick the best answer straight away. I tried to show off my banana in a sand storm creation, but I think it may have been lost on some of you. Thankfully, there s a great new App available for my iPhone to help me create some really cool flip things! The FlickBook is available now in the App Store on iTunes for only about $5.00. Flickbook lets you create classic-style animations on your iPhone or iPod touch with a basic, no-frills simple UI. There s a large area of white space for sketching, which is done by drawing a finger across the screen. Create the next image in your sequence by touching an arrow in the bottom right-hand corner. The aim of Flickbook is simplicity. The goal, the devs tell us, is for a user to be able to pick up the iPhone and go. To begin, you simply point and draw—a line follows your finger as you drag it across the screen. To create a new page, you simply touch the + sign that appears underneath the curled page once you begin drawing. After making a new page, the drawing on the last page is shown as an onion skin so the user can easily trace or judge where to make the next image in order to simulate movement. You can do this over and over again with no performance hit; the duo of programmers has used a different means of rendering the animations that involves very little memory footprint. There are three methods of playback: you can single-click the play button, which will lead to a steady playback of 12fps; double-click the play button, which will lock the movie in a loop; or you can scrub through the animations manually by dragging the slider through at the desired speed.
