We all know that in order to protect ourselves online, we must have strong passwords. How do you know, though, if your passwords are strong enough? Head over to The Password Meter. This is a free service that will check your password for you and report back to whether your password is weak or strong. The Password Meter checks for minimum requirements of at least eight characters, and at least 3 out of the following 4: Uppercase Letters Lowercase Letters Numbers Symbols It measures your password by several factors: Number of Characters Uppercase Letters Lowercase Letters Numbers Symbols Middle Numbers or Symbols Requirements At the same time, points will be deducted for things like having letters or numbers only, repeating characters, and sequential and consecutive characters. This is an excellent test, and I highly suggest you check every one of your passwords using this. Here is what he had to say: My grandmother, like so many other grandmothers, doesn t know a thing about technology and has the habit of watching the Oprah show. So when Oprah had a special about a teenager who became infamous online with the help of a webcam, my grandma concluded that webcams are the spawn of the devil. I did not watch the show, but I read about it and watched excerpts of it after I had heard my grandmother talking about the evils of webcams. Basically the boy s story goes like this The boy, Justin, was only 11 years old when he got a webcam and used it on his computer in his room. He went to chat rooms ,where he lied about his age, and got paid to have cybersex with the perverts in the chat rooms. Eventually he started his own website and made quite a bit of money using his webcam/website for porn. Justin claims that he did not know what he was doing, and that he was just taken advantage of. Eventually he stopped stripping for the camera, and (with the help of a reporter) went on the Oprah show to warn people of the dangers of the Internet. Oprah was interviewing the reporter who somehow saved Justin (again, I didn t watch the whole thing so I don t know the exact details), and was telling parents that they should monitor their kids online, and that children should not have their own computers in their rooms. I totally agree. But what really troubled me, and made my grandma scared of the Internet, was when the reporter told parents to throw away any webcams in their house! What? Doesn t he realize that webcams can be used for so much good? They are a great way to communicate to other people, and are not always used for cybersex. My other problem with the show is that they made this kid look like a victim. He wasn t. He claimed that he thought the old men in the chat rooms were his friends what?? What kid would take off his clothes for a 50+ year old man in front of his computer for money?? How could his parents have not known about this? Why was there a computer in this kid s room in the first place??? The people who should be blamed are Justin s parents! So Chris, could you please tell people that webcams are not these evil things that perverts use to abuse children. Rather they are tools that can bring families closer together. I think that it is important that people stop being so afraid of technology. Thanks! Grant, I have to agree with you 100%. If you follow this line of thinking, then screwdrivers are evil, because they could be used to stab someone. Cars are evil because people die in car accidents. They are merely tools. If you (the general you ) don t teach people and children the proper use of these tools, that s what can invite disaster. Parents need to set up guidelines for their children. They need to monitor what is going on. With great power comes great responsibility with ALL things. This would include a webcam. The webcam itself is not evil. The potential evils lurk behind any person who is not given boundaries, knowledge and understanding. Technology is not a babysitter. Impart wisdom. Teach your children, friends and relatives the proper way to use technology, and the matters of safety. If you are a minor, listen up. This is not your world yet. You do not yet have the maturity level that adults do. You have to respect webcam technology. You are in control of the webcam. It is not in control of you. Period. End of story. Following the suggestions above to develop healthy relations with the media will build credibility around you and your business and, in a sense, gives you third party endorsement. When I ask people to send me ideas for cool USB products, I keep getting this one sent to me. It s a USB beverage chiller. I was skeptical as to whether one of these would work or not, so I decided to try it for myself. Once it s plugged in for awhile, it will cool to about 45 degrees Fahrenheit, which is definitely pretty chilly. I didn t realize Mac OS X could do this. Despite the fact that the battery life of the 3G is bad, it s still better than other phones like it. It s true that it drains fast. What are you gonna do? You could carry a cord around with you wherever you go, or get some kind of external battery pack. I ve had my Lenmar external battery pack for awhile, and never really used it much. It s an excellent device though. It s a high-capacity external battery that will charge any USB device, so long as you have the proper cable. That would includes a DS, PSP, iPhone, iPod, Zune.. anything that charges via USB. Yes, it s as big as the iPhone itself, but not nearly as heavy. It does the job, though, which is what matters. When you re traveling, using one of these just makes sense. Why carry tons of separate chargers with you? Simply take an external battery with you, and charge all your devices with it. It has a mini USB connection, and a regular one. There s an indicator light that will tell you whether anything is charging or not, and turns off when the device is fully charged. These aren t cheap to buy, but it s actually saving you money. Think of buying 3 or more separate chargers for devices. Keep in mind, as well, that even proprietary chargers still charge via USB. Using this helps me get through the day, and doubles my charge on my iPhone. I ll be looking for an external battery made specifically for an iPhone. So, pass along your recommendations! He is an avid bowler, and sent in his tips to help all of you bowl higher scores! While I read Eric s bowling tips, I had a video done by XXOwnsXY from our chat room. She was playing around with OECake in that video, and it s way cool. Know your shoe size! You need special shoes to bowl in, as street shoes can damage the approach. If you don’t know, check inside your shoe for a tag or the bottom part of the shoe. After you get your lane, look for the bowling ball that weighs the perfect amount for you and make sure it fits your hand! Whatever your body weight is, take 10% from it. That would be the weight of your ball. BUT, if it’s too heavy, keep going a pound lighter until it feels somewhat decent for you. Don’t EVER get the tightest fit for you. If you’ve checked out YouTube, people have launched balls into the ceiling…and clocks! Also, never get balls with the fingerholes too big…you don’t want to get a broken foot! Make sure it’s snug, but still loose enough for you fingers! NO FOOD OR DRINKS IN THE BOWLING AREA! There’s a reason why those signs are all over the place. What happens if you spill soda all over the approach? You stick! sugary carbonated water turns into a sticky syrup that is a PAIN to clean off the approach and the shoes!…And if you fall and hurt yourself…it’s nobody’s fault but your own. Don’t even bring water down there (precautionary measures). You see that black line where the gutters start? Don’t you DARE go past it! That line is called the foul line and what it does is a) Lets you know that you went too far down and b) saves you from injury. Why? Because after that line there is a ton of oil that goes the rest of the way down the lane a certain distance. That oil is clear and very slippery and you WILL get hurt! Bowler’s Courtesy. Now I know you’re new to the game and all that, but league bowlers (such as myself) HATE it when people just rush up right beside or even in front of them and bowl. It’s very agitating and dangerous! Bowling balls weigh up to 16 pounds and if yo get smacked by one of those suckers, you’re going to get some broken bones! If you’re bowling on the first or last lane of the bowling center, do NOT go down that aisle and knock down the pins that way. Why? It’s dangerous and you can get kicked and banned from the center. Even more important is for you to pass this information on to your friends, family and coworkers. What happens when you go to open your favorite website and it s not there? Well, it s possible you have some malware there, yes. But it s also likely it s a security flaw in your DNS. Recently, a significant threat to DNS, the system that translates names you can remember (such as www.doxpara.com) to numbers the Internet can route (66.240.226.139) was discovered, that would allow malicious people to impersonate almost any website on the Internet. Software companies across the industry have quietly collaborated to simultaneously release fixes for all affected name servers. The problem is, there is a flaw that is going through your DNS. You can protect yourself by setting yourself to OpenDNS. This can affect you no matter what computer or operating system you re using, and no matter what ISP you may have. I even recently suggested that the hardware and software industry adopt an operating system that isn t Windows in order to benefit Windows. More competition on the desktop is good for everyone. I got an email here about something I know I have heard about in the past. I just haven t had an occasion to tell you all about it. Sam pointed me towards ReactOS. ReactOS is a free, modern operating system based on the design of Windows XP/2003. Written completely from scratch, it aims to follow the Windows architecture designed by Microsoft from the hardware level right through to the application level. This is not a Linux based system, and shares none of the unix architecture. The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible with Windows. This will allow your Windows applications and drivers to run as they would on your Windows system. Additionally, the look and feel of the Windows operating system is used, such that people accustomed to the familiar user interface of Windows would find using ReactOS straightforward. The ultimate goal of ReactOS is to allow you to remove Windows and install ReactOS without the end user noticing the change. Please bear in mind that ReactOS 0.3.5 is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is not recommended for everyday use. Certainly the hope for open-source will grow. I ve had a long-standing belief that open-source is the future of software. It s more than just a marketing tactic. Not only do you get software for free, it s about learning from the code as well. I m no coder. I can work my way around a file or script, but I can t do much of it on my own from scratch. I can do a bit of HTML and CSS but I only learned that by looking at what others have done. I ve been wanting to try it out, so this was a great opportunity. With certain software, you can take programs you record on TiVo and transcode them on your computer. You can then turn them into videos you can watch on pretty much any device. All the DVRs I ve had are boxes unto themselves, they couldn t be networked in any way. By networking my TiVo, I can then do as I described, to create videos I can play on my computer, iPhone or any other device I wanted to use. Here are a couple of programs you can use to accomplish this. TiVo Butler is an application that can track programs from multiple TiVo devices that you have on your home network. It s free, and allows you to browse the recordings you ve made on your TiVo. You can download them, encode them and much more. TiVo Butler is only available for Mac OS X. However TiVo Playlist is the Windows equivalent. Everything that you could hope to do with your TiVo, you ll be able to do with ease using TiVo Playlist.
