Will Consumers Pay for Hulu.com Videos?

Will Consumers Pay for Hulu.com Videos?

from Inside Digital Media on November 07, 2009
Duration: 647
Phil Leigh Will consumers pay to watch TV shows and movies at the hulu.com website? Hulu.com’s website hosts popular TV shows and movies after they have been released normally. Owners include Disney, NBC-Universal, and News Corporation (Fox). Viewers can watch shows for free but in exchange must also watch commercials since the videos are streamed and not downloaded. Last month, Chase Carey who is the President of News Corporation said that Hulu should start charging fees sometime next year. Presumably he envisions a premium subscription service providing more content or viewing time in exchange for a monthly fee. There are two reasons to be doubtful about the success of such a plan. First, as author Matt Ragas put it, “We all love the information highway, but we don’t want to pay a toll every five miles.” Second, incumbent media companies may be overvaluing their own content. Matt’s remark led me to examine my own subscriptions which are summarized in the accompanying table. Already I pay over $220 monthly for telephone, Internet, and video entertainment. Other services under consideration would advance the total to about $265 monthly.  Such an analysis makes me look for ways to cut, instead of add, services. Phil s Monthly Subscription Fees Naturally, I’ll focus on the bigger numbers first which come from the cable and wireless providers. However, if The Wall Street Journal (owned by News Corp)   editorial viewpoint prevails, the carriers will likely increase ISP fees even higher. That leaves consumers with thinner wallets to buy additional services from Hulu or anyone else. Even if cable and wireless charges don’t go up, consumers may calculate that they’re already paying enough in service fees. Readers of the Baltimore Sun seem to be strongly opposed to paying for hulu.com access. A polling button on the newspaper s website reveals that they voted 20-to-1 against it. You can see the results and review reader comments here. As for content value, the recent success of Paranormal Activity might serve as a reminder to media producers that we characteristically undervalue the works of people who are not like us. It’s reported that the movie was set in a single San Diego home and produced for $10,000. By the day after Halloween it had grossed over $80 million in box office receipts. Much like Internet publishing demolished the value of the printing press, low cost video cameras combined with computer-based film editing and an abundance of people seeking stardom and film-crew careers, necessitates an introspective reassessment of Hollywood’s self worth. Paranormal Activity is more than an isolated echo of The Blair Witch Project. Years from now we’ll look back to see it as data point in a connect-the-dots trend line pointing toward a future of content abundance. The 404 462: Where we make it too easy

The 404 462: Where we make it too easy

from The 404 (MP3) on November 06, 2009
Duration: 0
A young Wilson G. Tang celebrates his 68th birthday. (Credit: CNET/The 404) Wilson G. Tang is happily celebrating his 25th birthday tomorrow, so we take a few minutes at the beginning of today's episode of The 404 podcast to congratulate the man on making it this far. Can you believe this fool has only been on Earth 25 years? I always assumed you could tell Wilson's age by counting the highlights in his hair, but the consensus is that Wilson is certainly an old soul. He also brings in a very special birthday present that he got from his boo-bear this morning: a brand new Apple Mac Mini to add to his Apple museum brewing at home! Don't tell Wilson, but we've also arranged for a naughty Steve Jobs look-alike to pop out of his mooncake later tonight. iMEvil iPhone Soundboard App (Credit: TechPad Productions) Speaking of scary things, just because Halloween is over doesn't mean you can't still creep out your friends with this new iPhone app from TechPad productions called iMEvil. On today's episode of The 404 Podcast, Jeff manages to get his hands on a free copy of David Sobolov's (the voice talent behind Halo Wars, Call of Duty 4, Diablo III, Unreal Tournament 3, and more) soundback app that has 32 hilarious lines like "Prepare yourself to serve me" and "I'd buy that for a dollar." Since we're all about giving here at The 404, Mr. Sobolov and Tech Pad Productions were nice enough to provide our listeners with 5 free codes (normally priced at $1.99 in the iPhone App Store). If you'd like a free download, e-mail us at THE404CNET[DOT]COM and put only "iMEvil" in the subject and we'll pick five random winners to announce on Monday. Good luck! In the spirit of all things Apple, we present to you the typical dating profile of the average iPhone user. A new study from Retrevo reveals the absurdity behind what makes iPhone users tick. Among other things, one in five iPhone owners has admitted to watching "adult material" on an Apple gadget, which happens to be twice as many as the average BlackBerrian. And well...judging by Wilson's constant fixation on his iDrone, we ain't too surprised. Many more stories to get to that won't fit into this blog post, stuff like this Twitter-only handset and the most impractical, irresponsible, and dangerous accessory ever for your laptop, so be sure to check out today's full episode. Have a great weekend, everyone, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY WILSON! Maximum Geek Writing Update #1

Maximum Geek Writing Update #1

from Maximum Geek on November 05, 2009
Duration: 2291
OK, Jeff and I did something a little different last night. Instead of recording a full blown cast we did a short (for us) writing update. We talked about our NaNo/MGUWC stories and gave some more info on the Maximum Geek Utlimate Writing Challenge and why we re doing it. I m going to do something a little different and summarize our answers for the two questions we get the most about MGUWC. In cas you aren t up for the 38 minute cast. Question #1: What s the point, NaNo is already long enough to build a habit. Answer: Most of the people I know who do NaNo write their 50,000 words and quit. Some of them quit halfway through a story. I know very few people who keep writing (or even editing) after NaNo is over. The MGUWC is about keeping up that habit all year long. That s why we have different target word counts. Not everyone can write 2,000 words everyday. For the MGUWC the point isn t how much but that you take the time to write something, anything, EVERY day, not just every day for a month. Question #2: What s different about MGUWC from NaNoWriMo, is it just longer? Answer: There are several differences. Probably the largest (besides length) is what you can write. This isn t just for novelists. You can write poetry, journal entries, blog posts anything that involves writing counts. The other difference is editing and rewriting count. We haven t quite figured out how to handle a metric for that though. MGUWC is about options. Alright, now that those important questions are answered, go listen to the cast, we go into more detail about the point of MGUWC and why it grew from something just Jeff was doing into a challenge for anyone.

Russ with Hova--no big deal. (Credit: Russ Frushtick) Russ Frushtick from MTV's Multiplayer blog joins us on today's episode of The 404 Podcast to give us the rundown of this month's upcoming video game releases, but first we have to give a quick head nod to the Yankees for winning the World Series and, of course, Matsui for coming through with the MVP of the series. Also, were you as annoyed with the lame tech commercials during the game as we were? Between James Cameron's upcoming flop "Avatar" that looks like a 2-hour video game cut scene, the new Droid phone ripping Apple apart, and the rather malicious new Mac ads practically lying about past versions of Windows, we could barely watch the game! Next, we run down a list of near-extinct tech that just won't seem to go away. The list includes items like the landline telephone, Twitter, vinyl, fax machines, Windows XP, and Sonic the Hedgehog, and although we agree with most of them, how are people supposed to send sandwiches to loved ones without a fax machine? By far, the highlight of today's episode comes toward the tail end of the show during our classic Calls From the Public segment, where Jeff is the reluctant receiver of a huge spoiler to his current read, Lois Lowry's "The Giver." If you're planning on reading the book for the first time, you might want to click the mute button for the remainder of the episode, or risk suffering a similar fate. On the other hand, the look on Jeff's face when things get spoiled is too hilarious to miss. After receiving three such complaints the ISPs would have no choice but to cut off their internet connections. Was that really warranted given that it was a private beta release given to select developers? Anyway, now they ve put it back in. I m about 99% sure they put it back because they heard Molly s rant. Love the show, scottjackson ********** Hey Buzz Crew, After watching the podcast last night I went to Google Maps and looked up this mythic town of Argleton. I was poking around the area and noticed something else. Just to the south of the supposed site of Argleton is a train station. The name of this train station is the Maghull Rail Station. It made me laugh because it reminded me of what Natalie said about not being able to see it because we are Muggles . I got a kick out of it anyway. LOVE LOVE LOVE the show, Aaron (Graphic artist from Garland, TX)

404 listeners dressed as Rorschach and Silk Spectre! (Click thumbnail for full size.) (Credit: Hector) When you do a daily podcast for two years, you start to realize a strange thing about the daily news cycle: one day there are tons of interesting stories to talk about, and the next day there's nothin'. This is one of those nothin' days, but that doesn't mean today's episode is boring by any means. In fact, the slow news days gives us an outlet to do what we do best--veer off course and offer insight into what's going on in our heads! To kick things off, Jeff and Wilson educate me on GTA: The Ballad of Gay Tony, the second episode of the popular expansion pack that was just released a few days ago. After taking time to shake our collective heads at the voters in Maine, we give Robert Zemeckis the spotlight to reveal details about his latest effort, a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit! The interview shows Zemeckis choosing his words carefully so as not to reveal any details, but some are speculating that the script will tell the prequel story about how Roger Rabbit popped out of the Toon world and into 3D. As usual, we agree with Jeff's cynicism about the project considering the director's sketchy idea to use performance capture a la "Beowulf" and "A Christmas Carol" to bring the characters (not Roger Rabbit, phew) back to life. We're warning you, Bob--if you mess up this movie we will never forgive you, "Back to the Future" notwithstanding. Next, we hand it over to Wilson, who tells us about a recent U.K. study that reveals sensitive new "metrotextual" trends amongst young men in the 18- to 24- year-old age group. The study defines "metrotexting" as a text message sent from one male to another that offers a message and signs off with an "x," which translates from text-speak to a virtual kiss. Thanks to 404 listener Jenny Lawrence for this snapshot! (Credit: Jennifer Lawrence/The 404) The article goes on to report that metrotextuality is most popular among 18- to 24-year-olds, with an unbelievable 75 percent of males ending texts to their dude friends with an XO, or "hugs and kisses." We're not sure what's going on in the U.K., but our small experience doesn't reflect the same intimacy with our friends, although we're starting to think that we should spread the love a little more...so Wilson and Jeff, if you're reading this...doing the show for the past two years with you guys has been the most rewarding experience of my life, no lie. I love you guys. /bromance We've got a lot more stories for you, including a quick book review of Lois Lowry's The Giver, Modern Warfare 2 terrorist claims, a discussion about video game ratings, Nintendo's newest DSi XL/LL, T-Mobile carrier outages, and of course - the third and final round of our virtual Halloween costume parade! Enjoy the show and let us know what you think in a voicemail (1-866-404-CNET) or an e-mail (the404(at)cnet[dot]com). Have a great Wednesday! 404 listener Halloween costume parade, Pt. 2! I love the show but it can be hard to sit and listen to somebody for 5 minutes going on about a software licensing system that should be put into place, when it s been around for 15 years or so. It s called Microsoft Open Licensing with Software Assurance. http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/software-assurance/default.aspx Small and large corporations can purchase from this programme to license their applications and OS from Microsoft. They can opt in for Software Assurance which means they get any and all paid upgrades at no extra charge during the license period (Usually 3 years) They also get support and other benefits. Media is sent out when required. Some versions of the MS OLP allow companies to pay annually over the 3 years rather than up front if that helps their books. It does give you predictable IT expenditures. When it comes to home users, most IT experts will agree that it s usually best to use the OS that came with your computer and ignore major OS updates. Wait until you buy a new computer that comes with the new OS. Small updates like Snow Leopard on new computers like my March 2009 iMac make sense, especially at $30! However, I like Tom, do not want to pay monthly or annually for my software. If it was an option it might be ok, but not the only one I hope. I repeat, LTS! Cheers, Jay Rymal Toronto, Ontario, Canada ********** Re: Nook v. Alex. I am not sure what trade secrets were taken from Spring Design. Judging from the documents filed, Spring Design didn t even have a working prototype in the Feb 09 meeting, so the only thing they exchanged were probably concepts. If B s the big deal about dual screens Nintendo DS (hence the name) has been around for a long time with split screen functionality. Expanding it to a tablet size seems like an obvious expansion. Nintendo lawyers: start your engines. Dickson ********** Hey Buzz crew! Bryan the Insurance IT guy here in Springfield, Missouri. I've been listening to the show for several years without writing or calling in, but I was listening to the Verizon/Exchange discussion in episode 1098 on the way to work this morning and thought I'd finally chime in with a couple of tidbits! First, I administer Exchange and mobile devices for my office, and I can tell you there's no simple way for Verizon or any other carrier to detect and block Exchange ActiveSync traffic. ActiveSync encapsulates all device-server communications in HTTPS packets for security, so the only port that needs to be allowed for ActiveSync to work is port 443 - and you can bet all hell would break loose if any carrier tried to block port 443, as that's the port used for ALL SECURE WEBSITES! One thing they might try is to profile traffic patterns for ActiveSync and block based on that, but I'm guessing that's harder than it sounds and would get very messy, very quickly. Good luck to any carrier trying to pull THAT one off. Second, I've now been involved in setting up half a dozen users with iPhones in my office, some on personal plans, and some on our recently-established corporate account. NONE OF US is paying the 45 bucks for "Enterprise" data service on the iPhone. For the users who set it up on their personal accounts, that didn't surprise me. I DID expect to get some pushback on the iPhone data plans for the corporate accounts, but in every case, we looked the AT&T rep in the eye and said, "Yes, it's a corporate account, but I'm only going to check personal email", and in every case, they didn't even blink. Maybe this attitude varies by region, but here in Southwest Missouri, at least, I've never heard of a case of AT&T forcing the $15 premium on iPhone users, even on business accounts. Incidentally, there's only one time we've been required to pony up the $45 for the enterprise data plan - AND IT WAS TO SUPPORT OUR LONE BLACKBERRY USER. Maybe next time I'll call in, but I like to take serious relationships slowly. For now I'm still listening to other shows, but BOL holds a special place in my heart, and maybe one day I'll be able to commit.
