Last evening my wife and I had the opportunity to watch three great movies on the Turner Classic Movies channel. “The Glenn Miller Story” (1954), “The Benny Goodman Story” (1955) and “The Gene Krupa Story” (1959). Obviously Jimmy Stewart’s performance was stellar and can be considered one of the best of his career. It was easy to see that he spent quite some time preparing for this role and not only acted the part of Glenn superbly but resembled Glenn so closely it seemed surreal. The musical cuts used in the film were some of the best and of course the sound track is heralded as one of the greatest ever produced. The Glenn Miller Story In the Benny Goodman Story, Steve Allen, an actor of some quality but not on the same level as Jimmy Stewart, probably gave the best performance of his career! The story itself brings you from his early childhood and his formal training in music through the years up to his appearance at Carnegie Hall on January 16, 1938. Steve was joined by some of the greats of the time such as Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson, Ben Pollock, Harry James and Fletcher Henderson playing themselves in this movie. That was a thrill to see as many of these greats may not have had such an opportunity had it not been for the making of this movie. Overall the movie was well made and directed and was very enjoyable to watch. The Benny Goodman Story The Sal Mineo performance in the Gene Krupa Story was, for lack of a better word, poor at best! Sal was never one of my favorite actors anyway and his role in this movie just confirmed my feeling about his ability as an actor. Yes, I know many would say what about his role in “Rebel Without a Cause”, or “Giant” or even his role in “The Longest Day” as Pvt. Martini. Still, I don’t consider him that good of an actor. The movie itself lacked any real “oomph” and was rather slow and lack luster! I enjoyed watching the movie and discussing it with my wife but over all I feel it did a real injustice to Gene’s story. I really wanted to see Roy Eldridge and Anita O’day do “Let me off Uptown” which was one of the greatest hits for Gene’s band. All we got was a cameo performance from Anita and even that was very poor visually and not ever a cameo for Roy! What a real shame!
