A year after the United Nations upgraded its peacekeeping force in Lebanon after Israel's war with a Hezbollah armed through Syria, nine months after the Iraq Study Group called for direct U.S. dialogue with Syria and other Middle East countries, and three months after Security Council establishment of a special tribunal to handle the Syria-linked case of Rafik Hariri's assassination, the role of Syria in the region and its relations with others are significant and anomalous. On Sept. 6, 2007, The Century Foundation hosted a luncheon discussion on The Syria-U.S.-Israel Triangle and the Prospects for Middle East Peace. Leading off the discussion were two exceptional policy experts, David Lesch (biographer of Bashar al-Assad from Trinity University) and Moshe Ma oz (leading Israeli expert on Syria. at Harvard and Hebrew University), and one policy practitioner, lvaro DeSoto, until recently the U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East peace process and envoy to the Quartet. Rita Hauser, chair of the International Peace Academy, moderated the discussion.

HUSEINEYEH CAMP, Syria, 24 June 2008 -- If Aziza Melkash were not in this yellow-curtained room among 31 other teenagers intently discussing research findings, she would be holed up at home with little to do and nowhere to go. As an eighth-grader living in Huseineyeh camp near Damascus, Aziza first came to the UNICEF-supported adolescent-friendly learning space (AFLS) here in 2005 to learn about child abuse. The diminutive adolescent and scores of her peers in Palestinian refugee camps across Syria have since learned something even more important: how to recognize what needs to change in their communities, and how to be part of that change. "Now, when I see something wrong, I speak up," says Aziza. Since 2005, up to 3,500 adolescents have received AFLS training on child rights and life skills -- ranging from leadership and communication to healthy behaviour -- as part of a Norwegian-funded, UNICEF-designed programme to help young Palestinian refugees better protect themselves and contribute to their communities. The city, founded in AD 849 on the ruins of Taparura and Thaenae, is the capital of the Sfax governorate, and a Mediterranean port on the Gulf of Gabes. Sfax is an industrial center for processing phosphates. The city is often described as Tunisia's Second city.By the end of the 10th century Sfax had become an independent city state. The city was conquered by Roger of Sicily in 1148 and occupied until it was liberated in 1156 by local forces, and was briefly occupied by European forces again, this time by the Spanish, in the 16th century.prompting an unsuccessful invasion by Venice in 1785. In the late 19th century Sfax and the rest of Tunisia were conquered by France and incorporated into the French empire. During World War II, the Axis powers used the city as a major base until they were defeated by British forces. After World War II, Tunisia was returned to France only to gain independence in 1956. President Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Olmert are planning to go out with a bang, as Israel readies for a preemptive strike against Iranian nuclear facilities.
