Perennial American indie/folk-ers the Silver Jews will mark June 17th with the release of their sixth full-length record, Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea. David Berman is up to his usual tricks, spurting imaginative poetry that wraps beauty and sorrow around the everyday doldrums (”Suffering Jukebox”) , waxing whimsical fantasies (”Candy Jail”), as well as spinning good and long yarns (”San Francisco B.C.”). Some may know Fred Mascherino as the former singer/guitarist of Taking Back Sunday; others know him for the power-pop splendor of his new project, the Color Fred. Hatebreed is no stranger to success. The Connecticut natives have risen “literally from people’s backyards” to touring with metal deities Slayer, headlining the second stage of the holy grail of all metal tours, Ozzfest, playing several sold out headlining tours of their own, and even has their lead singer, the ever accommodating and articulate Jamey Jasta, hosting Headbangers Ball on MTV2 for all the world to see. In short, one of the most popular bands in all of metal is actually a hardcore band, and it’s their sincere dedication and connection to those roots that makes Hatebreed one of those bands that isn’t necessarily listened to by everybody, but one that is most certainly respected by everybody. I came to the teaching late. I know, one is not supposed to second guess these things or have any regrets but the fact is I came LATE to the teaching. I was nearly 50. It happened after searching and probing for the meaning of life. I was an introverted child, much filled with inhibitions and self-doubt. Early on I was a seeker but my path was not reveled to me. I guess this as everything was somehow karmically driven. After it was all set and done, I was lead to my teacher Burt Wilson. I was watching his TV program a few times before I emailed him and later we met in person. Since that time I regularity attended his class in his home on Thursdays. He started out teaching a form of Yoga, called Agni Yoga, that was brought out from the East by the Roerichs and later taught by the only true western Guru, Ralph Houston. As I found out, Burt was a third level initiate of Ralph. I always admired him as a wisest and most balanced person I have ever known. But knowing his level in the teaching raised this admiration to new levels. He is a teacher with a small t, as he expresses it. He is not a Guru in a traditional sense, only a teacher. Ralph, his Guru before his death set out a new paradigm, We are here NOT TO TEACH but to share knowledge. Burt held this vision close to heart and followed it to the letter knowing that we are all individuals and when set on the path we are guided and our higher self is our best North Star. There will be no more Gurus, in the traditional sense. Those who know can share their knowledge to those who are listening. Burt s new teaching is the Spiritual Synthesis, a guide to Enlightenment and Bliss. It is essentially a synthesis of spirit and matter in a form of serving and meditation. The two pronged method is well described to give us grounding and much needed balance on the Path. When we are only meditation while hiding from the world we do not have this balance. We cannot focus only on the Spirit while ignoring our illusory existence. Focusing only on the Spirit can lead to Obsession which can alter our perception and give us false illusions. This can only lead to madness as many found out. Do not take my words lightly. Embarking on the Spiritual path is a road filled with potholes and perils. It is double hard when there are no real gurus yet way too many charlatans around. Burt s new book on Spiritual Synthesis is coming out and we should all read it if possible.
