One of today s most influential and versatile creative musical talents Nitin Sawhney and composer James MacMillan have arranged a special concert bringing together young performers from the London Symphony Orchestra, which will take place in the Barbican Hall this Friday 30th October. The LSO On Track Youth Orchestra has been formed especially for this concert. All the young players are drawn from LSO s ten partner boroughs across East London and have been selected by their Music Service to play in this special event. Now in its fourth year, the LSO St Luke s Fusion Orchestra is built around a wide range of instruments and musical styles. It fuses the spontaneity and improvisational nature of a jazz group or rock band with the scale and breadth of a symphony orchestra. LSO Fusion Orchestra consists of youngsters from: Barking & Dagenham, Bexley, City, Greenwich, Hackney, Havering, Islington, Lewisham, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest. Live From SugarHill Studios - Episode 8

Rock combo Chase Hamblin and symphonic quartet Two Star Symphony. The program includes candid interviews with Rosa Guerrero and award-winning record producer, Dan Workman. Community guest and audience of one is freelance writer David A. Cobb of local music and events blog Houston Calling. Live from SugarHill is a collaborative effort between Zenfilm, OutboundMusic.com and SugarHill Recording Studios. Two Star Symphony is known as Houston s first call commissioned independent orchestra. Comprised of Jerry Ochoa (violin), Debra Brown (violin), Jo Bird (viola), and Margaret Lejeune (cello), they perform on a matched set of instruments handcrafted by Master Luthier Anton Krutz. Notable works include an original composition for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari , 24 shorts from Unseen Cinema: Experimental Treasures from the World s Leading Archives for the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and a feature-length score for Harold Loyd s film Girl Shy . In 2004, The American Ballet Theatre enlisted them for the Dominic Walsh-choreographed dance Alchemy that premiered in New York. They recently unveiled their first full-length ballet score for a production of Titus Andronicus. They won the 2009 Houston Press Music Award for Best Unclassifiable Band and have been mentioned in Spin Magazine. Chase Hamblin is a descendent of one of America s first Gypsies. The great grandson of a Vaudeville songwriter, Hamblin has clearly inherited the traits of his freewheeling elders. Born in Italy and raised throughout Europe and Southeast Asia, Hamblin grew up with an odd yet influential mix of culture, art, and music. He worked as a model and movie extra while studying at NYU before moving to Houston where he joined the critically acclaimed group Penny Royal. After the band s demise, Hamblin began work on his debut solo EP, A Fine Time, with Derek Dunivan at the helm as producer and arranger. The upbeat, yet contemplative, late 60s vibe of the album has garnered comparisons to The Beatles and The Kinks, as well as contemporaries like Elliot Smith and Grandaddy. Hamblin s live ensemble includes local heavyweights Derek Dunivan (piano), Corey Power (guitar), Geoffery Muller (bass) and Robert Ellis (drums). Zenfilm is a nationally recognized film production company and HD post boutique based in Houston, TX. The creation of long time producer/director team Merideth Melville and W. Ross Wells, Zen has experienced exponential growth and received numerous awards since founding in 2005. Zen works with agencies and record labels to create national TV commercials, music videos and viral media. They also develop and maintain sustainable social marketing initiatives. Founded in 2001, OutboundMusic.com is an Internet radio and music retailer whose goal is to promote music produced by independent recording artists. They currently promote nearly 700 artists, both Texas based acts and many international talents.

Beethoven 5th Symphony 5 (graphical score animation) FAQ Q: What do the colors in the bar-graph score mean? A: The colors show which instruments are playing. Here's a chart: http://www.musanim.com/pdf/Instruments_B5.pdf Q: Please tell me more about the composer. A: You can read about Beethoven here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beethoven Q: Who is playing this? A: I licensed this recording from http://www.royalty-free-classical-music.org It is performed by the Royalty Free Classical Music Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Keith J. Salmon. I don't know anything beyond that about the recording (like, whether it is a real orchestra or synthetic, who are its members, when and where was the recording made, etc.) Q: Is there a way I could make bar-graph scores like this myself? A: The Music Animation Machine MIDI file player will generate this display; you can get the (Windows) software here: http://www.musanim.com/player/ There are lots of places on the web where you can get MIDI files; I usually go to the Classical Archives site first: http://www.classicalarchives.com/ Q: Could you please do a MAM video of _________? A: First, check my to do list: http://www.musanim.com/all/MAMToDoList.html ... If the piece isn't listed, read the Could you please do a MAM video of _________? item on my main FAQ: http://www.musanim.com/mam/mamfaq.html#copyright ... and if you think I'd consider doing it, email me (stephen at musanim dot com). Q: How did you make this video? A: There were a lot of steps; here's a short summary. I found a recording I could license and made the arrangements to use it. I found a MIDI file that was fairly complete, and imported that into the notation program Sibelius. I compared it to a printed copy of the score from my library and fixed things that were wrong (b5_fullscore.pdf is a snapshot taken during this process; note that there was a piano part in the MIDI file --- not something in the real score). Then, I listened to the recording and compared that to the score, and modified the score so that the timings were more like what the orchestra was actually playing (see b5_timings_adjusted.pdf). I exported this as a MIDI file and ran it through my custom frame-rendering software. Then, I made a reduction of the score (b5_reduction.pdf) and colored it to match the colors I was planning to use in the bar-graph score (b5_reduction_color.pdf). Unfortunately, when I squished the bar-graph score enough to make room for the notation score, too much detail was lost, so I ended up deciding not to use the notation. Then I put all the pieces (rendered frames, audio, titles) together in Adobe Premiere and exported the movie as a QuickTime file. Then, I used On2 Flix to convert the final file into Flash format (so that YouTube's conversion to their Flash format wouldn't change it in unpredictable ways), and uploaded the result. The PDFs mentioned in this description are in this ZIP file: http://www.musanim.com/pdf/b5_scores.zip .
