Burning Man: DIY Energy Makers
from Videoblogging - recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 04, 2008
Burning Man is filled with hackers, artists and makers of all walks. We thought we would search out the energy geeks and see how they were utilizing resources out in the middle of no where. The obvious, most abundant source of energy in Black Rock City is the Sun. Solar arrays ranged from the milk crate supported to the 10,000 watt, could (and did) power a small village variety. It was great to see electric art cars charging off the sun! Waste Veggie Oil diesel conversions were also a favorite among burners for powering art cars and generators too. Thanks to Maestro, David and Nick for sharing their desert energy oases with us!

Green Ambassadors: Laguna High School Students Research Biofuels
from Videoblogging - recent posts - blip.tv (beta) May 29, 2008
Lindsay Hassett aka Betty Biodiesel leads a group of Laguna High School students in the Green Ambassadors program on a tour of Dave Erikson s home brew biodiesel lab. The Green Ambassadors program was created to get students learning science, civics and environmental stewardship through experience and action. Today s lesson provided the group with basic information about biodiesel that they could present to their school board. This field trip is just one step in the process to further their mission of converting dirty diesel school buses into cleaner burning bio-machines.

Cynthia Shelton: National VegOil Board
from PCMechTV December 26, 2007
In the winter of 2005, Cynthia Shelton embarked on a journey not many of us would be keen on pursuing- a solo drive from California to Massachusetts in a 1973 Mercedes run on straight vegetable oil. She was successful in her journey- documented here- but came away feeling like the people she met on the road needed a way to connect. What better way to connect than through the internet? Hence the birth of The National VegOil Board. Spearheaded by Cynthia and other VegOil activists, The NVOB aims to educate the public as well as promote more research into straight veggie oil as a reliable and clean burning fuel.

I had an e-mail glitch and didnt get notified about comments for the last post, so I sincerely apologize for those who commented and got ignored! As predicted, here's our very elementary video on figuring out the sock filter system of oil cleansing. Its probably too long, and definitely too dark, but amazingly simple! For those of you out there wondering if SVO is too much hassle, take a look and see what you think... 2gnj Episode 44: Motivations for converting your diesel car to run on vegetable oil.
from 2 Guys Named JOE June 09, 2007
Episode 44 Show Notes The anniversary show, where we play a memory of episode 1. Then, Ed and Joe talk about why one would be motivated to convert their diesel car to use vegetable oil ( not same as biodiesel ). cutting cost to drive doing it for the earth, lower the carbon footprint lower our dependence on foreign oil vegetable oil is a renewable resource, and because Joe wants a Prius. The government is not supportive of you converting to use alternate energy because they're losing revenue on you buying gas. Quotes from this episode: i got to pull down larry's pants...did you do it kneeling? is that extra black? you hand it to em, and take their money? motivations for vegetable oil conversions... sexual reassignment surgery LA seems to be the area for conversions. don't punish us for trying to make the earth more green. oooooh, french friesssszz...the vegetable car... :) I got it right :) yea for Ed. why don't you just buy a car that gets 46 mpg ? our buddy the sun. use your phone device thingy, and call the show. you want to go over them again? do you have a prius on your amazon wishlist? Links from the show: beyond the wall of sleep, Timmy's link for LA place to convert prius to electric car, California Cars, california cars State makes big fuss over local couple's vegetable oil car fuel link to senator and IL billf Straight vegetable oil as diesel fuel, Taco time question of the week: what's the byproduct of burning vegetable oil in a car? what's the impact on the environment of a vegetable oil burning car? why would organic be a viable way of growing fuel? Going Diesel
from headsoff February 11, 2007
I bought a car in August. It was a Honda Civic, a basic economy car known for its reliability and its gas mileage. Many of my friends live off the subway lines and many miles from me, my work at WGBH is hard to get to without a car, and every job I seem to be applying for requires that I have my own transportation. So I caved. Despite my good intentions and rationalizations, it became clear that driving this Honda was gnawing at my soul. The automatic transmission confused me and it's all together possible that the unfamiliar territiry simply made me paranoid, but the mileage just never seemed to be what it should be. I felt like I wasn't even making it to 30 miles per gallon, and slowly I stopped visiting people because I felt guilty. I would be on edge driving to have dinner in Waltham (only a 10 mile trip from my home) because I figure that's probably almost half a gallon of gasoline that I'm using, and by driving all the time and burning so much gasoline I'm contributing to so many problems including health risks associated with the gasoline exhaust, greenhouse effects, and warped political priorities that have arisen to ensure US appropriation of foreign oil. So after owning the Honda for less than 6 months, I decided it was time to sell it and buy something that didn't stress out my morals so much. Enter, 1989 VW Jetta. For now, this car will run on diesel which is not much better for the environment, but at least is more efficient. I can get approximately 45-50 miles to the gallon, as opposed to just under 30 with the honda. And as it warms up I can transition to biodiesel and eventually, with the help of these guys, to SVO (straight vegetable oil). Click here for Quicktime movie (in a new window) Thanks to Chad for the excellent camerawork, encouragement and company.
