Wendy Tremayne and Mikey Sklar: Green PioneersWendy Tremayne and Mikey Sklar: Green Pioneers
from PodTech.net: Technology, Business, Media, and News Podcasts
April 22, 2007

Wendy Tremayne, best known for founding Swap-O-Rama-Rama, and Mikey Sklar, who is geek-famous for self-implanting an RFID chip into his hand, are also green pioneers. Leaving New York City to settle in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, these two decided to invest their retirement funds into creating Green Acre. Their goals for Green Acre span from being a green lodging spot for geeks to becoming a community center and arts venue for the increasing number of T-or-C locals. We got the chance to hang with Wendy and Mikey on our long drive from San Fran to SXSW. They graciously toured us around, showed us the hot springs, cooked us meals, and shared the secrets of making papercrete. In the next few videos, you'll get to hang with them, too. Thanks Wendy and Mikey! Also thanks to Jonny Goldstein for putting us in contact! Tags: Wendy Tremayne, Mikey Sklar, Green Acre, Jonny Goldstein
1st of the Month? Make a GREEN Move!1st of the Month? Make a GREEN Move!
from PodTech.net: Technology, Business, Media, and News Podcasts
April 15, 2007

Seeing a lot of furniture and used junk on the sidewalk? Must be moving day in your neighborhood! With a little extra pre-planning and the right resources, you can make moving a green experience. Go through your closet, your desk, your entire apartment decide what you absolutely need and recycle the rest! Recycling can take the form of reselling on Craigslist or eBay. Donations to Goodwill and Salvation Army are perfect examples of re-use. Find electronics and battery recycling centers near you through Earth911.org. We've moved three times in the last three years and have become experts at selling all our stuff online. If we find that we need a certain item again after we've moved (like a desk or some chairs) we cruise Craigslist for cheap or free deals. When we move again and can't fit them in our car, we put them back into the cycle and sell or give away! Tags: Craigslist, eBay, Goodwill, Salvation Army, Earth911.org

Sustainability can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. In business terms it can mean sink or swim in an ocean of sharks. MonkeyBrains is a local, independent ISP (Internet service provider) that started up at the height of the last boom and is a shining beacon of hope that companies can come out of a bubble alive and kickin'. We first met Alex from MonkeyBrains when he hooked us up with killer WiFi and Live Video streaming for Vloggercon06 at The Swedish American Hall. The MonkeyBrains crew did such an amazing job and were so cool under pressure that we felt the need to dig deeper to hear their story. Thanks Alex and Rudy for having us over! April 04, 2007

We enjoyed our conversation and worm-bin-making adventure with Freshtopia's Barb Finnin so much that we've decided to give you another little taste! Barb and Ryanne discuss the radical-ness that is composting and how to avoid bringing non-compostables (darn plastic bags!) into your home. videobloggingweek2007 Tags: Freshtopia, Barb Finnin, composting, videobloggingweek2007

In the heart of Park Slope, in Brooklyn, Rolling Press is, unlike traditional offset printing presses, the perfect neighbor. No loud noises, no harsh fumes - Rolling Press is a dual-purpose live/work studio and home to company president Eugene Lee. Eugene gives us a tour and drops some science on how printing can be as green as possible - not only by using green materials, but by cutting out unnecessary, outdated chemical processes. from PodTech.net: Technology, Business, Media, and News Podcasts
March 28, 2007

On a recent trip to NYC, we got the chance to sit down with green, community organizer Glenn McAnanama of Upper Green Side. Community organizing can easily become a full time job. Glenn gives us some advice on how to keep meetings sane and get active in local government. Little by little, block by block, community groups like Upper Green Side can start to make green change from the bottom up. Thanks to Amy Stodghill from It's The Environment, Stupid. for introducing us to Glenn. Tags: Glenn McAnanama, Upper Green Side, Amy Stodghill, It's The Environment, Stupid
Apartment Composting 101: Vermicompost with Barb FinninApartment Composting 101: Vermicompost with Barb Finnin
from PodTech.net: Technology, Business, Media, and News Podcasts
March 26, 2007

Barb Finnin is part of the amazing Freshtopia team. She's a certified master composter- her specialty is Vermicomposting with worms. We were super excited to learn that we could compost in our city apartment with a homemade worm bin even though we don't have a yard. Throwing food scraps away in the garbage is not something either of us enjoys, so having a green alternative has been more than satisfying for our sustainability goals. After 4 weeks, our worms are happy and thriving. Find out more about Vermicomposting and other forms of composting on Wikipedia. Visit Barb at Freshtopia.net. from PodTech.net: Technology, Business, Media, and News Podcasts
March 21, 2007

We first met Darius through the Coworking experiment at The Hat Factory. Spending even a few minutes with Mr. Roberts and you will surely find out that his passion is transit. How can mass transit be more efficient? How can cities, metropolitan areas, and even small towns make better use of the resources that already exist? What technologies will be up and coming to help transit in the U.S. stay afloat in an age of ever-increasing oil prices? Darius is currently starting up a car share program through DartCar.com, a site dedicated in helping people share the resources that exist all around them. Visit Darius' blog for a glance into his transit crazed mind. Tags: mass transit, DartCar.com
James Kao: CEO Green CitizenJames Kao: CEO Green Citizen
from PodTech.net: Technology, Business, Media, and News Podcasts
March 17, 2007

Our last video at Green Citizen showed how easy it was to recycle your old electronics and the process in which they start to get sorted out. James Kao talks to us about why it's important to sort and keep track of products as part of the Cradle to Cradle methodology. Cradle to Cradle is a book about the elimination of waste that you should all check out. Visit Green Citizen and please recycle your old, geeky toys properly! Tags: Green Citizen, James Kao
