James Kalm ignores the sweltering heat wave to visit this astounding exhibition of works by legendary San Francisco artist Jess. Since rejecting a career in nuclear physics to pursue his unique vision of art, Jess (Burgess Collins, 1923-2004) has created one of the most influential reputations on the West Coast. With an independence of thought, Jess evolved an unmistakable painting style, as well as carried the tradition of collage to new heights of richness and complexity. This is the first New York gallery show in over twenty years and the first in-depth presentation of the work since the Whitney s Grand Collage retrospective in 1994.

A movie about bodyshape, fat and thin, personal identity and dreams. The dream of flying, the dream of shapechanging, tropes of fantasy and personal myth addressing issues of dissatisfaction with our material being. The title comes from a series of freeform poems I've written from the 1980s up to the present day. "Blockworld", "Blockland", "The Land of Block" are all from the writings which were inspired by experiencing "writers' block" or a reasonable facsimile thereof. Remember: "The Block can flow!" Made with Bryce 5.5. The models are Victoria 4 exported from Daz Studio. The text was animated in Particle Illusion. The soundtrack was made in VSThost and Hammerhead. The whole thing was put together in Debugmode Wax, Debugmode Frameserver and Windows Movie Maker.

James Kalm visits the new Andr Schlechtriem Gallery for a walk-through glance of new works by Rosa Loy. Titled close to me many of these paintings depict a world of women, often as twins or double gangers deriving their content from this destiny of gender. Loy s use of fast drying casein produces a tempera-like dryness to the pigment and requires a quick and facile touch. Loy, who is married to Neo Rauch, is one of a very few women artists recognized as part of the influential Leipzig School.

Surrealist artist Salvidor Dali collaborated with Spanish film making master Luis Buñuel to create Un Chien Andalou, a fantastical nightmare of mostly irrational and fiendishly macabre images. Un Chien Andalou is one of the watershed pieces of early avant-garde cinema. The images found in this short film are horrific and frightening by any standard. Self mutilation and transforming body parts are merely the beginning of the non-linear mashing up of powerful and mind bending scenes. The film would also be a tremendous influence on later avant-garde filmmakers like David Lynch.Author: QualityInformation Tags: scary salvador dali zombie surrealism horror top movies movie trailers zombies films surreal biography video clips Posted: 18 June 2008 Rating: 0.0 Votes: 0

The Citizen is an interactive quicktime project presented in 18 parts on a single CD. Becasue the user retains control over the progress of the media, the download can not stream- it must be completely donwloaded in order to function according to its design. The following excerpt is a conventional adaptation of some early scenes, More information is here: http://johnobrienvideo.com/scene_notes.htm The surrealists held that the purpose of art and cinema was to stimulate and manipulate the subconscious via an altered, misplaced and "improper" association of the elements of reality. By 2000, the surreal and transcendental experience of modern TV viewing has produced a million hallucinogenic experiences for everyone within its reach. The average adult will have seen over two million commercials by age 65. The "best" and most effective of these are surreal soundings of a product's potential within the viewer's subconscious mind.

June 05, 2008

James Kalm pays a visit to this exhibition by one of today s most recognized painters Neo Rauch. As a former student, now professor, of the Leipzig Academy, Rauch is seen as a founding member and leader of this century s first and most dominant painting movement. Using a wane classical technique, and incorporating a Surrealist influence, many of these paintings have allegorical content related to the historical practice of painting and the artist s place in society. Designated as Post Socialist these works question not only the theories of utopian ideals but the accepted norms of pictorial representation.
Good Night, Nurse! 1918 R Fatty Arbuckle, Buster Keaton 3/3Good Night, Nurse! 1918 R Fatty Arbuckle, Buster Keaton 3/3

Arbuckle's surrealistic nightmare! Keaton would later expand on the dream sequence idea for some of his own films like Sherlock Jr. Long believed lost, this two-reeler resurfaced in fragmentary form in the late 1970s. Great synopsis by wmorrow59: "The film begins with an extended storm sequence in which we find a drunken Roscoe teetering about in front of a corner drug store, trying to light a cigarette in the wind. (Watch closely as a woman with an umbrella is blown Roscoe's way by the storm - that's Buster in drag!) When Roscoe finally makes his way home, bringing along an Italian organ-grinder, a gypsy dancer, and a trained monkey, his long-suffering wife decides that an intervention is in order and checks Roscoe into the No Hope Sanitarium. There we meet crazed inmate Alice Lake, Al St. John in a dual role as both a doctor and a patient swathed in bandages, and most strikingly of all, young Buster Keaton as Dr. Hampton, who suavely enters the operating room in a bloody smock, sharpening a pair of steak knives. Before long Roscoe has swallowed a thermometer, provoked a frenzied pillow fight among the patients, and donned a nurse's uniform to flirt with Dr. Hampton. If you've never seen Buster smile check out the flirtation sequence here in which he matches Roscoe grin-for-grin. Eventually, Roscoe escapes from the sanitarium and everyone winds up outside, participating in a cross-country marathon race. (Again, it feels like a dream: "Then suddenly we were all outside, running a marathon...") The race sequence is topped with a final surprise twist that isn't much of a surprise, really, but it wraps up the whole imbroglio on an appropriately weird, anti-climactic note. What were you were expecting after all that, a real ending?" Starring Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle as Fatty, Buster Keaton as Dr. Hampton / woman with umbrella, Al St. John as the Surgeon's Assistant, Alice Lake as the Crazy Woman, Joe Bordeaux (Bordeau), Joe Keaton, and Kate Price as the Nurse. Written and directed by Roscoe Arbuckle. Musical Score by The Alloy Orchestra.
