You’ve Heard of the Purple Cow, but Have You Seen The Purple Tree? You’ve Heard of the Purple Cow, but Have You Seen The Purple Tree?
from Bigg Success
July 02, 2008

One of the most frequent questions we get is how we come up with show topics. So we thought we d give you a peak behind the curtain and show you how we arrived at today s show idea. We were eating! That s why today s show topic is really I can t believe I ate that whole thing! Plop plop fizz fizz! Mary-Lynn recalled We were at a family diner. I started reminiscing about when I was a kid. There was this restaurant that we would go to when we went to visit my grandma. It was called the Hen House. The outside looked like a big red barn. The inside had a country d cor and a fun little gift shop that my sister and I would always visit after eating. They had games and books and candy George added We re showing our roots here. For those of you who aren t familiar with it (which is likely most of you), the Hen House was a Midwestern chain. Sort of a smaller version of Cracker Barrel. I have a book by William Dooner, the guy who started the Hen House chain. And to me, the most memorable thing from his book is when he talks about the purple tree in the forest. Hence the subject of today s show! The Purple Tree Dooner says to picture yourself walking through a lush green forest. In the middle of it, you come upon a tree that is painted purple. You keep walking, but you can t get that purple tree out of your mind. Most likely, your impression is negative because it doesn t fit. Why someone would paint that tree that color? Mary-Lynn When I heard this story, I wondered if this is where Seth Godin got his idea for The Purple Cow. Because I d never heard this purple tree story before, but I d definitely heard of the purple cow. We can t speak to Seth Godin s inspiration, but they are different concepts. William Dooner said to look for something that stands out because it doesn t fit. It probably leaves a negative impression. Seth Godin encouraged us to purposefully not fit in so that we stand out. By doing that, we make a positive impression. In either case, purple tree or purple cow, you remember it. So, as it applies to real estate, the purple tree in the forest means properties that may be run-down, out-of-the-way, unused, underused that sort of thing. What Dooner did with the Hen House chain is a perfect example (see, we re about to make it all fit you were starting to doubt us, weren t you?). The $10 million purple tree He saw this vacant land next to gas stations along the interstate. It was ugly, smelly, littered with junk, no landscaping. A purple tree. This land had never been used commercially. At that point in time, there often wasn t any place to eat when you stopped to fill up with gas. So Dooner had a bigg idea he invested $15 thousand to start a restaurant chain on that unwanted and unused land. He later sold that chain for $10 million! Beyond real estate We highly recommend Dooner s book. It s called How to Go from Rags to Riches in Real Estate. It s a must read if you re interested in real estate investing, but this purple tree concept goes beyond that. Think about customers nobody wants to serve, employees nobody wants to hire, jobs nobody wants to do. Maybe one of those is your purple tree! So look around today where do you see purple trees? The Billionaire and the Batboy: What Warren Buffett Learned from Eddie BennettThe Billionaire and the Batboy: What Warren Buffett Learned from Eddie Bennett
from Bigg Success: The How-To, Can-Do Place For People On The Move
May 20, 2008

Warren Buffett, the great investor who is the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and now the richest person in the world according to Forbes, told a story about a batboy in Berkshire Hathaway s 2002 annual report. The batboy was Eddie Bennett, who was 19 years old in 1919. He began his career with the Chicago White Sox, who went to the World Series that year. The next year, Eddie moved to the Brooklyn Dodgers. He had the Midas touch. They also won their league title that year. Two in a row for Eddie. But once again, Eddie saw a better opportunity. So he joined the Yankees in 1921. They won their first pennant ever. Eddie knew he was in the right place so he stayed put. The Yankees won five American League titles in the next seven seasons. What did this mean to Eddie? He made as much during the World Series as he made all year. So by choosing the right team with whom to associate, he doubled his income. And he became perhaps the best known batboy in baseball history. 5 lessons Eddie Bennett teaches us #1 Sometimes it pays to switch teams. If you re with a team that doesn t look like a bigg winner, and you see a better one, then go for it! #2 Don t have a scarcity mentality. People who think like this can t work with others because they don t think there s enough to share. Eddie shows us that we may actually make more money BY working with others than we could on our own. #3 You don t have to be the star to be a star. Eddie became famous in his own right. He s written about just like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. In fact, he s the first of that great trio that we ve blogged about! #4 Every job is important. A supporting role is just as important as the starring role. Eddie knew his place and the importance of what he did. He knew that if he did a good job in his role, other people would thrive in theirs. And he would reap the benefits along with them! #5 He had a passion for what he did. The fans knew it and the players knew it. They respected him for the role that he played. It s reported that Eddie and Babe Ruth became good friends because they were both at the top of their game. What Warren Buffett learned from Eddie In the annual report we referenced earlier, Warren Buffett describes himself as the batboy for Berkshire Hathaway. He turns the heavy-hitting over to the leaders of the businesses in which he invests. He plays a supporting role so they can step up to the plate and hit home runs. March 27, 2008

Aloha, I m back from Hollywood and decided to post up this interview I did last week with a friend of mine, Larry Meggs. Larry is a retired law enforcement officer and as you can imagine one tough guy! So getting him to go raw, was quite a challenge. I ve been harping on Larry for many years now to make the switch and finally (8 years later) he decided to give it a try. In 2 weeks, Larry dropped 20lbs, his blood sugar dropped over 30 points from a 137 to a 95, and he has stabilized his blood pressure. I m so excited to see Larry feeling healthy again. I ve known him for such a long time and I m glad to see the spring in his step again. I recorded a quick 8 minute call with Larry about his experience at my home here in Midville, GA and the raw food diet. If you have a husband that is looking into the diet, this interview will help inspire your husband to take the simple leap and go for it! Have A Problem? SOLVE IT!Have A Problem? SOLVE IT!
from Bigg Success
March 04, 2008

People often get overwhelmed by all of the problems they face. They just don t know where to start. To help with that, we recently discussed an ancient Chinese secret for solving all of your problems. It s a simple two-step process: Put all of your problems away into their own individual compartments. Pull one problem out at a time when you re ready to deal with it. It makes things more manageable when you re not looking at all of your problems all at once. But many people don t know what to do once they pull the problem out. It s a timeless process, but we ve put our own spin on it to make it easier to remember. SOLVE IT: The 7-step problem-solving process Statement Origin List Verify Eliminate Implement Test Step 1 Statement State exactly what the problem is. Until you ve defined your problem clearly, you can t solve it! Step 2 Origin Isolate the root cause of the problem. A lot of times, we stop at the symptoms of the problem. You have to find its point of origin or you won t solve it! Step 3 List Brainstorm for possible solutions. BRAINSTORM, don t analyze. Get all of your ideas on paper so you can solve it! Step 4 Verify Determine the pros and cons of each solution. You won t know what s best until you analyze it. Then you can solve it! Step 5 Eliminate Get rid of all but the single best solution. You ve done the research. Now go with what you believe is the best option so you can solve it! Step 6 Implement Work your solution to make your solution work. You have to take action to solve it! Step 7 Test You ve established benchmarks so you know whether or not your solution is working. Check periodically against these benchmarks. Keep an eye on the problem to make sure that you solve it! So the next time you have a problem SOLVE IT! Isn t that simple? If you found this helpful, pass it on to your friends so they can SOLVE IT, too! Our bigg quote today is by Voltaire, who said, No problem can stand the assault of sustained thinking. And that sustained thinking is most productive when you use an organized process. That s how you can take any problem and SOLVE IT! Next time, we ll look at the fear that often holds people back from their dreams. Until then, here s to your bigg success! SpoolCast: An Interview with Cameron MollSpoolCast: An Interview with Cameron Moll

SpoolCast: An Interview with Cameron Moll Recorded: September 7th, 2007 from the d.Construct 2007 Conference, Brighton, England Brian Christiansen, UIE Podcast Producer Duration: 30m | File size: 17 MB [ Subscribe to our podcast via iTunes. This link will launch the iTunes application.] [ Subscribe with other podcast applications.] On my recent trip to the d.Construct 2007 conference in Brighton, England, I had the good fortune to sit down with acclaimed designer Cameron Moll. Cameron is the Interaction Design Manager for the LDS Church in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the work he oversees reaches a world-wide audience. His very popular design blog Authentic Boredom, regularly features engaging articles and unleashed the wicked worn look across the web, which earned him a mention on NPR. Cameron s excellent talk at d.Construct was about the differences between good design and great design. (Fortunately, he s covering this topic and much more in his almost sold out full-day UI12 tutorial session.) I found Cameron s perspectives on graphic design theory, HCI principals, and his communication-centric approach both fascinating and stunningly effective. In our conversation, Cameron let me in on his background and his unusual journey to both design and the web. We discussed the importance of getting to know your customer before you make design decisions. We also discussed what to do after each project so you take its lessons forward. Like many of us, Cameron works in a large, complex organization. This means managing design decisions and wrestling (often inflexible) enterprise technology. He talked to me about how he has integrated his real-world experiences into his UI12 tutorial and how he is working on bringing elegance and great function to his complex work projects. Even though Cameron is recognized for his world-class design talent, I am surprised how friendly and humble he is. We had a fascinating conversation that I think you ll enjoy. Podcast: Flickr: How a Bright Star Changed the World of Web Applications with Peter Merholz and Jared Spool Recorded: January 23, 2007 in Monterey, California Brian Christiansen, UIE Podcast Producer Duration: 1h 25min | File size: 39 MB [ Subscribe to our podcast via iTunes. This link will launch the iTunes application.] [ Subscribe with other podcast applications.] Back in January we had planned to have Stewart Butterfield, co-founder of Flickr, speak at our Web App Summit. Sadly, events conspired to force Stewart to Europe at the last moment. In his stead Peter Merholz and I got together to lead an analytical interactive discussion on what makes Flickr such a success in the Web 2.0 space, and as a popular destination in general. What makes it such a draw? It can t just be AJAX. » What tools does Flickr use to foster its community? » Does the service have a personality? » How is it different from competing sites? » How does Flickr invite you to discover new tools? » How does the app leverage its API to increase its values? Flickr is often mentioned in our individual talks for just a few minutes. It was really interesting to collaborate and dig deeper into the app and explore its many layers of innovation. I hope you enjoy this recording as much as I enjoyed the session.
