It has now been nine months since Kevin Rudd apologised to the members of the Stolen Generations. While this symbolic event was very important for Indigenous Australians, Professor Larissa Behrendt of UTS maps out what needs to be done next to help communities build strength, good health and education. In this wide-ranging speech given at a public forum at UTS, she examines the NT Intervention and other government initiatives, to look at what works and what doesn't. We also hear from David Cole, manager of the Balunu Foundation in Darwin. They work with young at-risk Indigenous people, giving them a sense of purpose and pride. 'The name Balunu comes from the Luritja language of Central Australia. The word Balunu means creation and this is what we are about: the creation of strong youth, strong culture, strong leaders, for a strong future by breaking negative cycles and creating positive ones.'

October 04, 2008

PLEASE READ! Sorry guys for taking so long just to make one video! If you can, please please please view this in high quality :D. Anyway, this video is based on Edward's POV (finally!) and covers pretty much the whole series up until Edward and Bella's wedding, which occurs in Breaking Dawn. I found that the song 'Keeper' matched perfectly with Edward's feelings towards Bella, and the events which revolved around the series as a result of their relationship. The first verse of song, which extends to the chorus, is based on the first book; and respectively, the second verse and the chorus is based on New Moon, with lastly, the rest of the song based on Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. Okay, so I have this feeling that people will go Bella doesn't have blonde hair! , well, just assume she went blonde for two months in New Moon, alright? On Australian television, until recently, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's culture or history has often been stereotyped and told from a white perspective. However, that is changing, thanks to the emerging talents of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander filmmakers, actors and workers in the industry. Awaye looks at two productions that show evidence of that change; The First Australians, about to be shown on SBS, and Channel Nine´s new children´s drama Double Trouble. Also, well known Aboriginal leader Galarrwuy Yunupingu gives his perspective on Indigenous economic independence.

This is the third time I have made this trailer (I'm a perfectionist!) and I'm still not really happy with this. No doubt there will be the perfect clip in the new twilight trailer that is coming out this month, but*shrug*, oh well. I hope i have done my fans proud. It was very hard to make a worthy Eclipse trailer after the success of my New Moon trailer, with the clips at my disposal. There are many bits from the book i just didn't have footage to show *CRY*, but hopefully I will find some and fix this vid up. Anyways, I hope you like it...I did the best that I could, with what I had. Program used: Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 *Throws hands in the air* I'M SORRY TAYLOR, I just really didn't want my Jacob to be shark boy. So I used Steven Strait once again. I'm sorry! As soon as I have appropriate clips I will make more trailers with Taylor instead. Please bare with me for now, haha! *I also forgot to put a tag on this vid, so please, please don't steal this trailer. If you want to use clips from it please ask me first and then credit me.* (pps. I have to credit/thank a very special person, and a dear friend who inspired me with the wording of this trailer, JackieOrioncat. I HIGHLY recommend you check out her channel. The Senate Select Committee report on Regional and Remote Indigenous Communities will be released this afternoon. Coinciding with this is the release of related new economic analysis. A study carried out by Access Economics confirms that closing the life-expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians would result in greater economic benefits and increase the living standards of all Australians. Commissioned by Reconciliation Australia, the study found that if that gap were hypothetically closed right now, over the next twenty years, we could expect GDP to increase by 1%, or the equivalent of $10 billion dollars.

It's been fourteen months since the federal government declared the situation for Aboriginal children in the Northern Territory 'a national emergency'. Determined to put an end to child sexual abuse, it took control of 73 Indigenous communities in what became known as the Intervention. Welfare payments were quarantined and more than 11,000 health checks were conducted but, from the moment it was announced, debate raged about how effective the Intervention could be. In June this year, the federal Indigenous Affairs minister, Jenny Macklin, announced a review of the Northern Territory Emergency Response. The eleven member review board is due to hand their report to the government by the end of the month.

Nazmeena Cummings grew up in an Afghan cameleer family in Central Australia. Her unique nomadic childhood, traveling with the Muslim cameleers, at the beginning of the twentieth century, is captured in this radio feature. Her father, Fiad Mulladad, traveled with his extended family, delivering supplies to places beyond the train line. She describes a harsh but exotic lifestyle that revolved around the work, the camels and Muslim worship. They managed up to 50 camels in one camel train, with the camel breeding season causing some problems. The families lived in what was called Ghantown, which was always on the edge of town. Male members of the community would go to the Mosque in Ghantown where they cooked spicy curries that were then distributed amongst the rest of the families. She also remembers living and working with Aboriginal families, who were employed by the Afghan cameleers. Nazmeena´s mother would assist at their births as the local white settlers would not assist the Aboriginal people with medical problems. Nazmeena told her story to her grand nephew Adrian Shaw, who wrote: "Ships of the Desert' is probably the most important radio documentary that I will ever produce because it's about my family history. It was a privilege to be able to tell this wonderful story about how the camels and Afghans helped build this country, delivering fences, wool bails and food to people in the bush"

September 12, 2008

Sylvia Scott grew up on the Erambie Mission in Cowra, where the Aboriginal people had a reputation for standing up for their rights as far back as the 1940s. She remembers fondly a childhood with not much money and many mission rules and regulations but one that was full of music and fun. Her father Lochie Ingram was a shearer and good provider for their large family and her mother Louisa Ingram led protests against the mission managers, who at times denied the whole mission population their rations. Louisa and some of her children are in the iconic photo of the 1938 Aboriginal protest that was held in Sydney while white Australia celebrated its sesquicentenary. Sylvia discusses the fact that they have never been properly identified in the various published versions of this photo. She also talks about the circumstances of her sister Doris going into the Bomaderry Children's home, not being allowed to return for many years. Sylvia tells her colourful life story to her niece Suzy Ingram, who also talks about her own memories of Erambi Mission and the Ingram family. We also catch up with Development Officer for Indigenous Music in the Northern Territory, Heath Baxter who talks about some exciting new bands and a mentoring system betwen older and younger musicians. View The Day of Mourning photograph and see information about the people in it. You'll also see photographs of Sylvia Scott and the Erambie Mission in the late 1930s.

Keeping children in school has always been a struggle in remote communities in the Northern Territory. In the most remote areas, official attendance rates are about 60 per cent, with only one-third of Year 7 children achieving the national reading benchmark. Late last month, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced a plan to link school attendance to welfare; restricting payments to families who don't send their children to school. Over the last few years, a not-for-profit organisation called Red Dust Role Models has also been working hard to keep Indigenous kids in school. The organisation takes sports people and musicians to Indigenous communities all over the Northern Territory to run workshops in local schools.

from Hindsight
August 30, 2008

In 1971 the South African Springboks rugby team toured Australia amid controversy and chaos. Anti-apartheid demonstrators attempted to disrupt the games because the team had been selected on racial grounds. Protesters clashed violently with police and Premier Joh Bjelke Petersen declared a state of emergency in Queensland, where police charged at and beat up demonstrators. They also had creative forms of protest; like having Aboriginal people wear the 'sacred' Springboks jersey, and getting a mixed race couple (Zimbabwean and white Australian) to stay in the same hotel as the Springboks to draw attention to the fact that their marriage would be illegal in South Africa. The Aboriginal protesters also raised the nation's awareness of racism in Australia. The event ushered in a more militant form of protest in Australia and it kicked off our sports boycott with South Africa -- the Springboks did not return for 22 years.
