Monday 8:21 Album of the week: Norah Jones

from RN Breakfast - separate stories on November 08, 2009
Duration: 192
Multiple Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Norah Jones returns with her fourth studio album, The Fall. This album shows an evolving Jones with new collaborations from players and a new producer/engineer. The sound is more varied and finds her stretching ideas rather than following a path already travelled. In seven years and three albums, she has sold 36 million albums worldwide, and this record is possibly her best. Radio National is the first media organisation in Australia to have all of the tracks from The Fall available for listening on demand before the album's release. Listen to a preview of the album 1. A big victim of global warming that no one ever mentions or gives much thought to is the Pacific Walrus. Environmentalists are usually too busy caring about Polar Bears or Seals, things that look cute, but it takes a real caring individual to mention the much maligned and hated walrus. http://mcfartnuggets.blogspot.com

A magnificent stretch of coastline in north-eastern Tasmania was named the Bay of Fires by a French explorer in 1773 as he watched the smoke rise from campfires lit by the first Tasmanians who knew it as Larapuna. We go on a sound journey along the coast, described by Lonely Planet as the `hottest´ travel destination in the world.

By my count it's their 15th release. Three local gents who have received huge raves for their live and recorded work and are held in high international esteem, but many Australians would not have heard of them. The main reason is the same reason they are so great, that is they don't compromise their art. Usually their tracks are more than an hour long, the length of the whole CD, so naturally they don't get a lot of air play. The latest album/track is over 67´ long, so how will this improvised jazz piece for piano, double bass and drums translate into a Breakfast album of the week? The answer is on the radio. Sections of the performance will be played across the week in Breakfast with the whole piece making up the second hour of Radio National's Sound Quality late night, Friday 30 October with Tim Ritchie.

2009-10-25 Caring for the Soul of the Country

from Encounter on October 24, 2009
Duration: 2910
The sound of the digeridu, or Yidaki as it's known in North East Arnhem Land, has been adopted as a symbolic part of Australian culture. But how well do non-Indigenous Australians understand the spirituality of traditional Aboriginal music and its centrality to wellbeing? This Encounter travels from Darwin to North East Arnhem Land to attend the 10th Garma Festival of Traditional Culture. Held in Yolgnu country on the Gove Peninsula, it draws together over 1,000 people to watch, perform and celebrate traditional culture. Caring for the Soul of the Country examines the idea of cultural practice as central to wellbeing -- spiritual, social and physical. It looks in particular at ceremony -- a sacred crucible of the broader practice of 'caring for country' -- as vaccination against illness of the spirit and of the body. And it asks if a clearer understanding of the centrality of 'caring for country' might affect government policy on social provisions for Aboriginal communities. Note: The music in this program was performed by singers from the Gumatj, Maugn, Anindilyakwa and Kuninjku clans. Special Audio Downloads Download MP3 An extended interview with Tom Calma, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner and Race Discrimination Commissioner.

A man gives his daughter a list of one hundred tracks that will give her an education in country music. Some years after his passing, this daughter records a dozen of these tunes and makes an album. A couple of guests help out who carry a bit of weight (Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy and Rufus Wainwright), so you would think something might be on with this album. Especially so when you find out the dad in question's name -- Johnny Cash.

Monday 8:20 Album of the week: Moriarty

from RN Breakfast - separate stories on October 11, 2009
Duration: 175
Moriarty has members with French, American, Swiss and Vietnamese parentage, based in several cities around the globe. They're a ramshackle olde worlde acoustic outfit with a theatrical bent and a tendency to dress like 1930s Prohibition outlaws. They make a sound that takes in folk, country, blues, jazz and cabaret; and it's this one-of-a-kindness that makes them stand out -- and then it's the quality that lets the music sink in.

Twilight Saga Recasting: Who else could play Jacob Black?

Twilight Saga Recasting: Who else could play Jacob Black?

from Most Discussed on October 05, 2009
Duration: 178
http://Twitter.com/ClevverTV - Follow Us! Alright you guys-we know it sounds crazy but WHO would be your number one pick if Taylor Lautner wasn't already playing the role of Jacob in the Twi-series. It's all just a little bit of fun for our new Twilight Recasting Series! Welcome back to ClevverTV-I'm your host Joslyn Davis and today we're letting our imaginations run wild, as we play with the idea of who would be the best Jacob if Taylor Lautner wasn't already around. It's a fun idea, but hits pretty close to home in the real world. Taylor was almost booted from his role following Twilight because filmmakers doubted his ability to pack on the L-Bs for Jacob's big growth spirt. Boy did he prove his critics wrong though! Even so, lots of replacement names were being tossed around at the time of the almost-recasting. Michael Copon-who you probably recognize from The Scorpion King - was one of the top contenders for the job, and he even spoke out about how much he'd like to take on the role of Jacob. He said that he felt that there was so much in Jacob Black that wasn't brought to the first film and that if he had the opportunity, he would create an amazing character. Copon went on to say that Jacob is more than just a guy who walks around smiling. Of course we now all know that Copon never got the chance to play the role of Jacob. But the 26 year-old hottie, who is half-Filipino, definitely has the looks and the bod to play Jacob. Another name that was in the mix for the Jacob re-casting also has the tall, dark and handsome Jacob look going --he hails from NYC and his name is Steven Strait. Steven got his start modeling and quickly moved to LA to pursue an acting career. The 22 year old has worked along-side people like Chase Crawford in The Covenant and Camille Belle in 10,000 BC. He actually did all his own stunts in The Covenant, which would have made him even more worthy to play the power-packed role of Jacob. And call me crazy, but don't you guys think that Taylor, Michael and Steven could be long-lost brothers in real life? The resemblance between the three young actors is uncanny! A few other possible picks, if we were really re-casting the show could be other actors like Channing Tatum-if he dyed his hair black or perhaps Jesse Metcalfe-we haven't seen him for a while and he's got the looks for sure! So guys-we know you already love Taylor Lautner, but we're just having some fun, so leave a comment with your pick and play along with us. Check back next time as we continue our Twilight Re-casting series! Thanks for watching ClevverTV-I'm Joslyn Davis reminding you to get constant news updates by subscribing to all our channels and following us on Twitter-see you later!
