Watch This: Spielberg and Lucas Raping Indiana Jones (Literally)
from Cinematical October 09, 2008
Filed under: Action, Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Home Entertainment, Remakes and Sequels So who watched the season premiere of South Park last night? I tell you, just when you think those boys are starting to get a bit weak in their old age, you're shown a scene featuring Steven Spielberg and George Lucas physically raping Indiana Jones as the poor man cries out for help. Oh yeah ... and did we mention Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull comes out on DVD this Tuesday? Yup ... and it's, er, loaded with extras! Obviously this was their way of saying the latest Indiana Jones film sorta raped their childhood, but count me among those who kinda enjoyed watching the flick. (And I'm not alone -- here's Jeffrey's passionate post in defense of the sequel.) Sure, I could do without a few scenes here and there, but overall it wasn't terrible. What do you think? Did South Park cross a line last night? Note: The following scene might be a little sensitive for some, so be warned -- TV-MA and all that ... Permalink | Email this | Comments

Discuss: Could Steven Spielberg Direct Superman?
from Cinematical September 22, 2008
So during my trip to London this past week, we visited Pinewood Studios. I'll tell you all about that amazing adventure through movie history at a later date, but while walking through "The Mansion" to have lunch, I spotted several framed photos featuring images from films that have shot at Pinewood with little fun facts about each. Of course there were Bond films and Aliens and Eyes Wide Shut ... and Superman (1978). Regarding the latter, the fun fact talked about how Steven Spielberg was originally up for the director's chair on Superman. The producer's fought over Spielberg, because one wanted him to direct Supes and the other wanted to wait to see how "his fish movie" turned out. Of course, Jaws would go on to become one of the great films of our time, and when the producers finally came to their senses and offered Spielberg Superman, he was already attached to Close Encounters of the Third Kind and couldn't do it. Enter: Richard Donner. But what would a Superman film directed by Steven Spielberg have looked like? Could you imagine? Word is Tintin is now in trouble, with the possibility that Spielberg could be left without a new project to direct (save for Lincoln, if he should decide to finally delve into that one). In my opinion, Spielberg -- with his wholesome, Americana persona and expert eye for mass appeal action/adventure -- would be the perfect person to step in and helm a new, updated Superman. And while all these other franchises go dark, Spielberg could bring some much-needed light to the Man of Steel. (Plus I wouldn't mind seeing what a Spielberg-directed superhero flick would look like.) What do you think? Could Steven Spielberg save Superman? And would you want him to?Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels Permalink | Email this | Comments

M. Night Says: What I Really Want to Do is Produce
from Cinematical July 22, 2008
Filed under: Thrillers, Deals, Cinematical Indie Fans of the world's most famous writer-director based in Philadelphia need not fear. Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan is not abandoning his creative work as a writer and director in favor of restricting himself to production duties. He has, however, formed a new partnership to produce one thriller per year for three years, according to Variety. M. Night "typically generates more movie ideas than he can execute." The terms of his deal with Media Rights Capital (MRC) mean that M. Night will "create the stories and ideas for the films and pick the writers and directors; MRC will finance." This won't affect his next directorial project, The Last Airbender, which is still set for release by Paramount in 2010. My first thought was that M. Night is following in the footsteps of Steven Spielberg. You might remember that Spielberg created the TV series Amazing Stories in part because he had so many story ideas that he couldn't do himself. He ended up writing or developing 29 stories (out of 45 episodes). Interestingly, Eric Kohn asked M. Night in an interview last month if it wouldn't be easier for him to "go the independent route." Even though the filmmaker said he's "never had an issue with studios," this sounds like a big step in the independent direction. And here's a quote that might warm the heart of anyone, including myself, who has been cool about his recent work: "Working with the next wave of innovative filmmakers will teach me many things that I can bring to my own writing/directing and give my stories the opportunity to be brought to the screen in a stunning way." George Lucas NOT Directing 'Red Tails'
from Cinematical June 19, 2008
Filed under: RumorMonger, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, War Just to clear up, George Lucas is not directing his first non-Star Wars movie in 35 years. I repeat, George Lucas is not returning to the director's chair. Once again ... never mind, I think you've got it. Two days ago there was an AP story about Lucasfilm's Tuskegee Airmen film, Red Tails -- perhaps you caught my post -- but it didn't note what Lucas' involvement would be. As I wrote, the article seemed to assume that he was directing the project. A number of sites around the web also treated the news (more like an update) as if it claimed that Lucas was indeed helming the WWII-set picture. Others speculated that he was taking the reigns. Well, he's not. He's merely serving as executive producer. There is no director signed on yet.Continue reading George Lucas NOT Directing 'Red Tails' Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kevin Spacey Becomes a 'Shrink'
from Cinematical June 17, 2008
Filed under: Drama, Independent, Casting, Deals If you've seen American Beauty, then you already know Kevin Spacey can do a mean pothead on screen -- especially one that is a little ticked at the way his life has turned out. Both skills will come in handy now that Variety has announced that Spacey has signed to star in the indie drama, Shrink. Jonas Pate is already on board to direct Thomas Moffett's script about a celebrity shrink in the midst of a personal crisis. Spacey will play a psychiatrist to the stars who's thrown for a loop by a personal tragedy. When he is unable to deal with the loss, he becomes a chronic pothead and all-around burn out; eventually losing faith in his ability to help his patients. Starring as his various celebrity clients are Saffron Burrows, Jack Huston, Griffin Dunne, Robin Williams, Pell James, Robert Loggia, Keke Palmer, Laura Ramsey, Gore Vidal, Dallas Roberts and Mark Webber. Transformers - or There's More To This Than Meets The Eye
from Mobile Movie Minute July 09, 2007
Mobile Movie Minute 30. CGI gone crazy! The things Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay can do are quite magical, if you accept that you're watching a cartoon, a comic book and a toy store all thrown into a bowl of fantasy soup. 4 bags of transforming popcorn, and worth every bite. Well, except for the time we spend with the humans, who are all stupid. Some of the worst acting ever. Watch for John Voight - he'll surprise you as the Secretary of Defence. Quite the step backwards, John. iPod Shuffle anyone? email robertintoronto@gmail.com with the subject I Like Movies . 100th email wins! Simple, eh?

Facade
from Batman Geek February 18, 2007
Ok, for the 50 or so people who saw "It's late" you know that I was working on a short film called "Facade" for the new reality show from Mark Burnett and Steven Speilberg called "On The Lot". Now I know some of you will be going "WTF, Heath you don't need Hollywood to tell stories, you can and have been telling your stories how you want to tell them. You don't need Hollywood...." etc, etc. And yes you would be right, I don't "need" Hollywood, but.....look, my childhood was very messed up. Now I know some people say that their childhood was messed up and it really wasn't, but trust me, mine was really messed up...... I had to overcome alcoholic and abusive parents.....someday I will be comfortable telling the story, someday. Movies and comics were my escape, a chance to "be" someone else....it was my dream to go to Hollywood and be an actor....well life happens you know? So anyway this opprotunity came up, so I am going for it. What do I have to lose? I made a film? I was going to make a short film anyway, and a whole lot more. I have a chance to use the system to make a story I want to make and maybe get a million dollars out of it. I say why not.....So I made the film and I entered it in. So I am asking you if you like it, go to the On The Lot site where my film is located here http://films.thelot.com/films/13979 and view it, send the link along and tell your friends. If you don't like it, then that's cool... Regarless with what happens I am going to continue to tell stories that I want to tell, whether 1 person or 1,00000000000 people check out my stuff. Why because telling stories is all I have ever wanted to do....how do you tell a dream no? This is who I am, for better for worse....this is who I am..... Well here it is and I hope you enjoy it.
