August 25, 2008

In this episode, John Federico (twitter: @gadgetboy) and Steve Hatch (twitter: @shatch) and Chia-Lin Simmons (twitter: @zeropts) welcome Kris Smith (twitter: @croncast) to ODM. John has joined BlogTalkRadio as Vice President of Marketing Events: John attended the New Media Expo in Las Vegas where he met Paolo Tosolini of Microsoft. Paolo is responsible for the Podcasting Kit for Sharepoint which was recently made available as open source software. We debate the combination of Sharepoint + Open Source + Enterprise Adoption. CORRECTION: Oops. Wizzard Media did NOT release an iPhone podcatcher at NME. They ve offered a browser-based receiver for awhile now. They introduced a new video player at NME. OMG! Steve got an iPhone! We discuss the consumption model for apps, digital media and the deplorable battery life. Kris and Chia-Lin still cling to their Treo 700p phones Steve wonders if we ll see the same kind of excitement and adoption of the iPhone from other handset makers and ecosystems. Kris thinks Google Android. Royalty rate hikes may shut down Pandora. Last.fm may not have the same issues since they are owned by CBS and the media giant already pays the appropriate royalties. Steve loves Simplify Media on the iPhone which gives him the ability to stream his iTunes library to his phone along with 30 other friends. John thinks that might extend beyond Fair Use. A federal judge ruled on Wednesday that copyright holders must consider the potential fair use of their works before sending copyright takedown notices to online video sites. How novel When will the strong arm tactics of these industry groups come to an end? Never. They ll just morph. Kris wonders why a service like Magnatune hasn t had a greater impact in terms of changing the way record labels conduct business. Ditto for CD Baby. Microsoft contracts with Jerry Seinfeld to stump for Windows Vista along with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates. Our music is Democracy from Alexander Blu. We talk a bit about lifecasting, live video and of course, Chris Pirillo. Will overlay advertising on video work, live or on-demand? In this episode, John Federico (twitter: @gadgetboy) and Steve Hatch (twitter: @shatch) welcome Chia-Lin Simmons (twitter: @zeropts) back to ODM. Welcome Alexandra Claire Becker! Events: John s going to the NY Tech Meetup on July 1st Google and Yahoo enter into a search advertising agreement Executive Exodus at Yahoo: Qi Lu, EVP engineering for Search and Advertising Technology Group; Vish Makhijani, SVP and General Manager of Search and; Brad Garlinghouse, VP of Communications s List while Joshua Schacter, founder of del.icio.us, has also decided to leave. Yahoo announced a deal to sell display ads .on Walmart.com(?) Chia-Lin thinks it s the digital equivalent of shelving fees. According to the data, YouTube is still kicking Hulu s ass, regardless of what Mark Cuban thinks. Regardless, we want to know how Youtube and Hulu are going to monetize their respective businesses. Would Hulu consider a paid subscription model? YouTube is going to start allowing long-form content (videos above 30 minutes). Scoble thinks they want to insert advertising in the longer stuff. We agree. Gary Vaynerchuk s Wine Library TV moves over to Revision3. Verizon will be pushing its FiOS service to 50 mbps downstream, 20 mbps upstream. For $139.95 a month! Gene Simmons (yes, that Gene Simmons) thinks that Radiohead, the internets, p2p - and the FANS - are killing the recording industry. EMI is not only suing MP3Tunes.com, but its founder, Michael Robertson, personally. Microsoft has decided to support MSN Music customers (and the related DRM) until - at least - the end of 2011. They ll revisit their decision at that time. Audible files will soon play on the Zune. Our music is Democracy from Alexander Blu. Ken is planning to attend the Advertising 2.0 Conference on June 3rd and 4th. Craig will be at the Cannes Festival delivering a workshop on adaptive media. John s Netflix Roku box still hasn t arrived and neither has Chia-Lin s latest project . By the time show is released, she should be a mom! Pictures to follow. Is Yahoo done? Finished? Cooked? Finis? Where s the growth opportunity? Yahoo = Interruption. Google = Permission. How long will the old fashioned media buy (and buyer) be the status quo? Regardless of currently available data, there s anecdotal evidence that Q2 interactive advertising will prove to be soft. FaceBook will release their API as Open Source Software. John thinks that Open Social should adopt the FaceBook API as the standard and discard the Open Social API. AOL has joined the Open Social Coalition John s Netflix Roku box has shipped. We ll discuss it next week. Amazon Unbox will shortly release its streaming video service. Steve has been testing it. (John is awaiting its arrival to Federico HQ.) The service provides access to 10,000 of Netflix s 100,000 title library, providing Netflix subscribers maintain an $18.99/month service level. Ken and Chia-Lin think that John will be disappointed by the selection. Ryan Block gives it a relatively positive review. Ken wants to see simultaneous release of films in the theater, on cable, on-demand and DVD. John tells him to keep dreaming Online TV advertising is no longer an afterthought in the TV Upfront CBS buys CNET for $1.8 billion Ars Technica was bought by Conde Nast for $25 million and will be merged with the Wired properties. Microsoft will provide rebates to consumers who find and purchase products using MSN Search Twitter receives a $15 million investment round. Yadda, yadda, yadda. Yahoo earnings grow 9%; Microsoft earnings down. Maybe they should focus, eh? Apple earnings up. Mac sales up 40% and the iPhone is still selling strong. AT T seeems waaaay behind in its rollout of its 3G wireless network. Could that be why Apple waited to release a 3G iPhone? Verizon s rollout of EV-DO is so much more compelling. We discuss Apple s release of a CDMA iPhone at some point in the future. Japan? U.S. grey market? DOH! Microsoft discontinues DRM support for music purchased from MSN Music. Microsoft should read Seth Godin s Small is the New Big. The Death Knell sounds for the MSN Spot Watch Sony buys GraceNote for $260 million. In this episode, John Federico (twitter: @gadgetboy) and Ken Gellman (twitter: @gellmanken) are joined by Steve Hatch (twitter: @shatch) to discuss: Events: Podcamp NYC is on April 25th and 26th at Brooklyn Polytechnic University. As a result of Daddy Duty, John can t attend this year. Ken will be in Baltimore with his in-laws for Greek Easter and Steve is just a dork. Ken is attending the San Fran Music Tech Summit on the 8th, 9th and 10th. Steve will probably attend Web 2.0 in San Francisco on April 22 - 25. John is planning to attend the Conversational Marketing Summit on June 9th and 10th in NYC. (Congratulations to John Battelle Co. on the close of their recent round of venture financing.) The Podcast Audience grew 40% in one year according to a study by Arbitron-Edison Media. New York passes The Amazon Tax which mandates that all ecommerce providers must collect New York State sales tax for items being shipped to the state - a hefty 8.25%. California however, has rejected a similar tax. John is searching for treatment for a new maladay called Twitter Fatigue. We talk about twitter, twitter tools (FriendFeed, SocialThing, AlertThingy), the types of twitter spam, etc. By the way: how is twitter going to make money? Why is it that twitterific can insert advertising into your twitter stream and generate revenue from it but twitter can t - or just doesn t? Steve points out that Pownce inserts advertising. Ken was introduced to twitter by the CEO of MatchMine, Mike Troiano (twitter: @miketrap) If you have a jailbroken iPhone, check out twinkle - a native twitter client that inserts your location into your twitter posts using the iPhone s location services. The Quest for Yahoo continues, this time with new crusaders: AOL, Google, and now a combined Microsoft-News Corp bid. We remain confused. AOL s Platform A is the top advertising network by reach. Blockbuster to buy Circuit City. Like most people, we wonder WTF they re thinking. Oh yeah, and they re going to offer set top box for streaming video. Again: WTF? Chia-Lin s having a baby! A girl, due mid-May. Congratulations to her and her husband, Chris. Apple has surpassed Wal-Mart as the number one music retailer in the United States with over 50 million customers and 4 billion songs sold. On their heels are new services from MySpace and LimeWire, adding to the services from Amazon, eMusic, SpiralFrog and others. Google s Chief Information Officer has left to head EMI Digital. Chia-Lin predicts he ll be gone in 18 months. Ouch. Elvis Costello s new album entitled Momofuku , will be sold as a vinyl record and as digital downloads - but not on compact discs. Events: Ken attended SXSW; Steve, Ken and John attended the Business of APIs Conference; John will be attending Jeff Pulver s Social Media Breakfast The deal closed: Audible is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon. Congrats to all. Steve Jobs says, No Flash for the iPhone. Adobe would develop it, if they could, but claims they need lower level hooks into the OS and help from Apple to do it. Perhaps as part of Apple s ActiveSync License they ll allow Microsoft s Silverlight instead? Hmmm. Is the iPhone Apple s proverbial Trojan Horse for getting into Enterprises? Google reports that it s seeing growth in mobile internet usage on several platforms - most notably the iPhone. When Android handsets are released, what kind of usage will they see then? Rich Miner, a Google exec, says that Android will outsell the iPhone. Rumors have Apple starting a music subscription service - one that may be subsidized (READ: Free) for iPod and iPhone owners. Apple COO Tim Cook has stated that the iPhone isn t necessarily tied to the current single carrier model, as it has been. Steve wonders is Apple will release and unlocked phone of any sort - including CDMA. He also wonders if this statement is a result of Google s strategy for Android. John Battelle says that everyone is in the media business. We delve into the nuances of Battelle s assertion, the separation of media and commerce and the concepts of engagement and attention. People spend nearly half of their media time online according to a research report by IDC, but only about 10% of media dollars ($21 billion in 2007, according to the IAB) actually flow in that direction. Steve asks, When will we merge the measurement of online and TV? John answers, Never. Of course there are attempts by companies like Nielsen to get a better view on holistic media consumption of panels of people. Steve asks, Will broadcast media become the modern day version of AM radio, taking a back seat to IP-based media distribution? Yes. Of course. We push Steve on his downloadable video vs. Blu-Ray prediction. He maintains that the tipping point toward downloadable video will begin in 2 years time. Steve launches into a diatribe on the future of media distribution. In this episode John Federico, Chia-Lin Simmons and Steve Hatch disect: The latest on the Microsoft-Yahoo acquisition attempt. It s gettin ugly Yahoo sheds hundreds of people in an attempt to right itself. There are plenty of companies in the Valley looking for talented folks who are ready to scoop them up. Shockingly, our friend Susan Mernit is one of them. Go woo her while you still can! Despite retention packages, a bunch of folks have left voluntarily: Bradley Horowitz left for Google while Jeff Bonforte left to become CEO of Xobni.. In the event of a Microsoft takeover, the packages will likely vest immediately, creating something of a a poison pill for the hostile acquirer. The 7-11 Deal: Could Yahoo Japan buy Yahoo proper? Sergey Brin finds the potential of a Microsoft-Yahoo merger unnerving - but not because of its potential to be a competitive force. Google is expanding its AdSense for Video advertising program. Publishers need to stream a minimum of 1 million streams per month in order to qualify for the program. VideoEgg has also announced their video advertising program, charging advertisers only when users Engage. $1 for a hover? That s what they consider Engagement? A CPH? We ll stick with Google for now LiveUniverse buys Revver for about $5 million . Marketers are moving their attention and now, so is Nielsen. In other research, 62% of marketers feel that TV is less effective than it has been. (Duh.) Sony finally wins a format war! Blu-Ray emerges as the winner in the hi-def disc war. Steve is already positing the demise of Blu-Ray as on-demand, downloadable video begins to take hold. John and Chia-Lin think he s jumping the gun, just a bit. An ODM-style brawl ensues. Chia-Lin sets up another Wine Wager. What will be Steve s prediction? In this episode John Federico, Steve Hatch and Ken Gellman discuss: Amazon buys Audible for $300 million Amazon not only gets publisher relationships, but also Audible s proprietary DRM - that plays on the iPod - and a relationship with iTunes for audiobook content. This will be interesting watch. Steve s very excited about being a part of the Amazon family. John and Ken want to know if Amazon will keep the AudibleListener subscription business intact and use it to promote the Kindle. Microsoft makes an unsolicited bid for Yahoo priced at somewhere near $44 billion dollars. Ken asks, What problem does this solve for either company? John wonders how they re going to integrate the two companies duplicative properties. Steve thinks it s a great thing for Google - while Microsoft and Yahoo become distracted trying to figure out how to integrate the two companies, Google will continue to execute on its strategy of world domination. Ken asks, What will be Microsoft and Yahoo s combined HedgeHog Concept? If the acquisition happens, is someone going to write The Peanut Butter and Jelly Memo? In this episode John Federico, Steve Hatch and Ken Gellman discuss: Events: Steve may be attending the Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco in April while John is planning to attend Web 2.0 NY on January 31st to see our friend Craig Calder of Yovia speak on the topic of monetizing social media and word of mouth. Yahoo s continued troubles. The New York Post (always an accurate barometer of happenings in new media. Ahem ) reports that takeover candidates include AOL, AT re not so sure how well the model is working for them... Ken would have commented, but he accidentally muted his mic. Not surprising, digital music sales are up and CD sales are down. The problem? The intensity of growth in digital is not going to supplant the losses in physical retail. Last.fm to offer free music streaming of 3.5 million tracks on-demand. No wating. Unsigned artists will be paid directly by Last.fm and the record companies will share in the advertising revenue. This will be a model to follow. Are you bored with the included 58 songs in Rock Band? You can buy more at $2 each on the Xbox Live Marketplace - costing more than 100% more than a track the iTunes Store or the Amazon MP3 Store. Steve points out that if the music industry were a bit more creative, they could find plenty of additional outlets for packaged music. Who would - who could - who should - buy the New York Times, should the company be in play? Murdoch? Should the government save it? We think not John Ellis thinks it should be Google. John Battelle thinks that it should be Google.org. Steve thinks that a Google/New York Times marriage would be too much of a culture shock for the folks at the Times. John thinks not - the NYT has been making numerous investments including its most recent investment in Automattic. Verizon Wireless announces its first Open Developer Conference, March 19th - 20th WPP invested in Integrated Media Measurement, a company that uses software on cell phones to measure TV and Radio consumption. SO much better than Arbitron s Portable People Meter approach. Of course, neither solution does anything for user generated content as you ll have to pay substantiable dollars to work with either of these companies.
