Stash Short Films Vol. 1

Stash Short Films Vol. 1

from No Fat Clips!!! on September 29, 2009
Duration: 0
Introducing Here s the first of what (I hope) will be a series of reviews of movies and (especially) DVDs. The rule of my posting has always been to go straight to the content, but one s gotta change. Comments (of any kind) are welcome: I would not leave them open otherwise. Starting with Stash Short Films (vol. 1), a special issue of Stash devoted to (could you guess it?) short movies, is not a random choice: with a couple of substitutions (mostly because I m not allowed to post some of those films here) it might well be resold as The Best of No Fat Clips!!! But straight to the content! With the likes of A Gentleman s Duel, Over Time, Gary and (one of my favourite clips ever) Conehead, just to say the first who came to my mind, this Stash DVD will hardly disappoint any of you. Each and every short included in the DVD is noteworthy not just for the technical achievements, for the amusing story and imagery, for the artistic impression: in fact, it s because none of these aspects has been neglected in favour of the others, making for little but still (or even more) perfect gems of filmmaking. The included booklet gives you the basic information about the shorts, and sometimes about their making; at the end of each page is a link to a web page on the Stash website with additional details. Now, I know what you re thinking: but even though it s true that most of the shorts are available online, and with the obvious exception of Bendito Machine which is vectorial Flash, Stash will give you an outstanding video quality. (As long as your DVD player supports the NTSC standard.) Given this, I ll not waste time talking you about the single shorts: for most of them, I ve already did my duty; for all of them, if you ve never seen em, you really really really should! One minor problem: the booklet might have benefited of some editorial care, since it s just Frankenstein-ed from the booklets of the regular issues of Stash where the movies where featured: hence, it sometimes refers to bonus content which is not actually available on this DVD. Obviously, I m just trying too hard not to seem too untempered here, before such amount of coolness! What I m trying to say is that this disc fully deserved its place in the first lane of my DVD collection, between The Work of Stephane Sednaoui and Shichinin no samurai (yes, there s a rationale in my ordering criterium ) So, in the end, the only person I would not recommend this Stash Short Films (vol. 1) is my worst enemy, because he d surely want to be friends soon after. Uhm, well, on a second thought UPDATE: Stash is offering a 25% discount on Short Films Collection 1 to readers of No Fat Clips!!! Interested? Visit this page: www.stashmedia.tv/promo; and enter this promotional code: NFC909WS. O no? Interessati? Pulp Fiction : Adrenalin shot straight to the heart

Pulp Fiction : Adrenalin shot straight to the heart

from bzshorts on May 12, 2007
Duration: 26
To refresh your memory, hit man Vincent (John Travolta) has the job of squiring his boss's wife, Mia (Uma Thurman), around town. While he's in the bathroom, she discovers his stash of what she thinks is cocaine and promptly snorts some. Bad idea--it's actually high-octane heroin. Vincent returns to find her comatose and frantically drives her to the home of his dealer Lance (Eric Stoltz), who hands Vincent a railroad-spike-sized syringe. The following classic dialogue ensues over the supine Mia:Lance: OK, you're giving her an injection of adrenaline straight to her heart. But she's got breastplates. You've gotta pierce through that. So what you gotta do is, you gotta bring the needle down in a stabbing motion. [Makes multiple stabbing motions]Vincent: I gotta stab her three times?Lance: No, you don't gotta fucking stab her three times! You gotta stab her once, but it's gotta be hard enough to get through her breastplate into her heart, all right? And then once you do that, you press down on the plunger.Vincent: OK, then what happens?Lance: I'm curious about that myself.Vincent does as instructed. Mia immediately sits bolt upright, eyes wide open and apparently fully recovered.OK, this isn't a 100 percent accurate depiction of what would actually occur. But here's the thing: doctors honest to God do on (rare) occasion jab a big hypodermic of epinephrine, aka adrenaline, directly into the heart of someone who's gone into cardiac arrest, a technique called intracardiac injection (ICI). If the patient is lucky she revives quickly--epinephrine is the fight-or-flight hormone that blasts through your system in moments of extremity. So there's a grain of truth to the scene. But only a grain. Among the problematic details: (1) The heart isn't beneath the "breastplate" (presumably Lance means the breastbone, or sternum--the heart is to the left of this), and in any case only a fool would try to force a needle through bone--you'd go between the ribs. (2) A cardiac arrest victim getting ICI doesn't instantly jerk up like the alarm clock just went off--the heart might restart right away, but it would take a while to regain consciousness. (3) Mia's problem probably isn't cardiac arrest anyway--the immediate consequence of heroin overdose is severe respiratory depression. As long as her heart keeps beating, ICI is pointless. If Mia needs an injection of something, a plain old intravenous shot will work just fine, since her blood is still circulating. (4) Epinephrine wouldn't sober up someone who was OD'ing. To neutralize heroin you'd administer a drug such as Narcan (naloxone), which blocks the opiate receptors in the brain and can bring a junkie back to earth in a matter of minutes.
