T-FREE071: Kaiza feat. Try and Error - "Mikroskop" Here is another technoid outing by the never tired German producer Kaiza and his allies Try and Error. It rolls forward very much with the Kaiza-typical fast staccato percussions which are nearly inaudible to the untrained ear but form a dynamic core within the centre of the reduced, straight halfbar beat. The bassline and bassdrums together with the snare form a virtual 4/4 structure which is broken by a concert of stabs and mangled samples and many edits, all in a counterdynamic arrangement, 100% Techno. The tune is significantly different from many older Kaiza productions in that the main elements of the beat are not so dominant in the mixdown but rather merge with the percussion layers and even the bass, creating a dense entity of interchanging rythms (the outro reveals this character of the tune by stripping it almost completely down to the beat). My friend Kevin and I were huge fans of Nun Attax back in the post-punk scene in Cork city in Ireland. We went to as many of their gigs as possible and even tagged along to rehearsals one time. Finbarr Donnelly was their front man and lead singer. Because we were almost stalker-like in our enthusiasm, we often got to chat and share a drink with Donnelly, Ricky, Philip and Smelly. In a scene which produced such notables as Cathal Coughlan, Mick Lynch and others, the Nun Attax were, for me at least, a catalyst and the defining band on the scene. There was nothing else like them. Donnelly once, alledgedly, told Bono to "Go way ya Langer". That's enough to make any man a legend in my opinion. But Donnelly was already a legend, for me. Cutthroat Convention are a mysterious bunch. Their faces hidden away behind peasant hats, their music equally masked behind unconventional yet compelling patterns. Much has already been written about the band from various sources, including the established voices such as Time Out, as well as BBC Radio 6. But a quick summary of this act would probably mention the keywords, "London via Japan", "eclectic", and probably "strange". Denizens of the bath house, is a very unconventional record, like fellow Rack & Ruin artists "anata wa sukkari tsukarete shimai", who incidently are another Japan/UK bunch, the twists are turns in this record are unexpected, creative, and rather unique. Blending discombobulated alternative rock with mini-epic violin driven post-punk may sound quite an undertaking, but Cutthroat Convention do it with such style, and confidence to boot. Calvita is a brand of cheese you can get in Ireland which targets the discerning child cheddar market. Where the name comes from I don't know but it could be the name of the chemical they use in the cheese to boost Calcium levels or something. Anyway, when I was a young boy, it was packaged in a blue box with a pictue of a young girl's face. For me, her name was Calvita. Blond hair, blue eyes and the most dazzling white Calcium-boosted teeth you could imagine. So, I was wondering what ever became of the little girl who modelled for that photo. I am still wondering. After casually listening to Jason the Swamp, Olivine was suddenly inspired to make music and actually record it. So she jumped out of bed, made an EP, and decided to perform under the name “Hungry Owl.” A simple, straight-forward tale in how musical projects are formed. Hungry Owl makes music that often barely reaches the one minute mark. Folkpop tinged guitar strum along anthems that have the knack of sticking in your head for an entire day, (as happened to myself with "Go Home"). Perhaps the only downside to this blissful EP is the fact that it is criminally short, six 'blink and you'll miss them' tracks in just over five minutes. Although no doubt it will seem longer, as once the last track has finished you will be sure to hit play again. With that in mind, here is what Sub-Woofer Special had to say.... The EP “Beware of Bi-Polar Bears” is the first “test” of Sub-Woofer Special’s new sound. After listening to a lot of acoustic artists such as Lightspeed Champion and The Dodos, the idea of bringing in an acoustic guitar came into play. Once the guitar was brought in, other instruments began to come to mind as well like the violin, cello, etc. As stated before, this EP is just a test to see if people like it. A huge thank you goes out to Lightspeed Champion, The Dodos, Matt & Kim, and Islands for their inspiration. Work on the next (hopefully) full length CD has already begun. Rough and fresh vocal cut by Wheeler in his totally unique style on the so-called "Turtle Riddim" by the Maffi homeboys, better known from our first Maffi-7" (Mikey Murka's long gone "Downpressor Man"), which is already a rare collector's item by now. "Breeze Blow" was recorded at Swallofield, Kingston, by Selectah Easy T Jam from Esperanza sound during his stay in Jamaica almost a year ago. The ultra-productive posse around Black Warrior, I Bogle, I David, Wildlife, Triple D and - of course - Mr. Wheeler came up with tons of dynamite tracks on loads of fresh riddims during those 4 months, some of them are destined to appear on vinyl soon. Wheeler runs a small shop for beer, juice, ice and cigarettes near the entrance of the Swallofield Ghetto. The lyrics of "Breeze Blow" were created together with Black Warrior and some other singers, who live around Wheeler's place and drop by all the time.
