Is Space Exploration Important? Sputnik's 50th AnniversaryIs Space Exploration Important? Sputnik's 50th Anniversary
from KUOW's The Conversation
October 04, 2007

On Oct 4th in 1957 the world's first artificial satellite was launched successfully. It was the size of a basketball that weighed about 183 pounds and it took about 93 minutes to orbit the earth. It was called Sputnik, and many historians say it was the beginning of the Cold War. Today on the Conversation: Space. 50 years since the launch of Sputnik the navigation of space has changed considerably. Is Space exploration worth the money? Do you think it's important for the US to have a space station? Should we put more astronauts on the moon, or should we focus on terrestrial concerns? Exploring space is no longer only something to read about in science fiction books and see on the big screen. Is a space colony really possible? Can we reach Mars? Is the universe dying? We'll talk to a space historian and an astronomer. Also, a new study has found that Portland's trees are worth $5 billion. We'll tell you why. And the former Blackwater guard who allegedly shot and killed a bodyguard for an Iraqi vice president lives in Seattle. We'll talk with his lawyer.
