Social Sound System http://www.myspace.com/socialsoundsystem Went to Big Bear over Super Bowl weekend. We rented a truck and charged it with a bunch of friends and Vampire Weekend was the new album on repeat for the better part of the trip. Absolutely amazing. They remind me of Paul Simon meets a Wes Anderson movie. Most excellent. So simple, yet the sound is so colorful and vibrant. Their songs have been stuck in my head since Super Bowl weekend. Went to the Groundation show here last Saturday and was randomly singing "Blaaakes, got a new face! (Blaaake's got a new face...)" and my friend she flips out that I'm singing that song. She tells me she has been playing that album over and over and has tried to see them 3 times in LA and they've been sold out every time. I knew that they are playing at the Casbah March 19th and think maybe I should get on top of it. The tickets were originally only like $15... The lowest I could find YESTERDAY was 5 @ $35. I was about to just buy 'em but my friend says we should just find some on Craigslist closer to the date. TODAY... All the tickets are going for $80-120. FUCKERY! Damnable supply and demand and all you people out there who think music is a business... It's not a business, IT'S AN INALIENABLE RIGHT!!! Hopefully I can figure out how to get to that show... Soweto Kinch is jazz and hip hop musician living in a tower block overlooking the Hockley Fly over in Birmingham. Oddly enough hes just finished working with the newsreader Moira Stewart to release the first of two albums which tell the story of living in his neighbourhood. In programme 24 of the Grassroots Channel he explains how the music in A Life in the Day of B19 is motivated by a passion for using culture to lift a neighbourhood.
