The expedition's goal had to be abandoned when the ship, Endurance, was beset by sea ice.? It was later crushed by the pack ice. The ship's crew and the expedition personnel endured an epic journey by sledge across the Weddell Sea pack and then boat to Elephant Island. It took them 639 days to reach Elephant Island. Upon arrival at Elephant Shackleton with five others set sail for South Georgia to seek help. They landed on the southern coast of South Georgia and then crossed the spine of the island in an equally remarkable 36-hour journey. The 22 men who remained on Elephant Island were rescued. The photographic kit included the cinematograph machine, an equally bulky square bellows stand plate still camera, and several smaller Kodak cameras, When Shackleton ordered the eventually icebound crew to strip down to essentials, the cameraman had no choice but to toss away all of his gear. With Shackleton's permission, he kept only a hand-held Vest Pocket Kodak? camera and three rolls of film. Hurley also selected 120 glass-plate negatives to save,? In an act that must have deeply pained this consummate professional, he smashed the remainder - about 400 negatives - and left the shards on the ice.
