from Engadget

Filed under: Laptops It's almost over folks -- at least, that's what we're continuing to tell ourselves. Anyways, Sammy has decided to follow in the footsteps of practically everyone else in the laptop realm by revealing a few newcomers over in South Korea. Granted, we already knew that a few of these were coming, but now we've got actual units with Photoshopped screen savers to prove their existence. Ready? Let's go. We've got the Centrino 2-based 12.1-inch Q210, 13.1-inch Q310, 14.1-inch R460, 15.4-inch R510 / R560 and 17-inch R710 on the consumer side, while the P210, P460, P461, P510 and P560 make up the business crowd. A few more lovely images are waiting in the read link, though no price / release dates accompany them. [Thanks, Khattab]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
Bloggers and Politics in South KoreaBloggers and Politics in South Korea

CHEN: South Korean bloggers are not only taking to the streets protesting U.S. beef imports but also becoming influential citizen journalists. Their online claim that beef import could put Koreans at risk of mad cow disease, was watched by two hundred million Internet users a day. STORY: The recent beef protests in Seoul are the biggest South Korea has seen in 20 years. Spurred by a flurry of online gripes that a deal to import US beef put society at risk of mad cow disease - these tech-savvy activists showed that they could take control of political and news agendas. [Do Jung-Gwan, Citizen Journalist]: We just relied on the established media in the past to get to know the important issues. But it has changed -- we can take pictures ourselves and post them on the Internet. This new culture is changing the way our country does politics. The government was caught off-guard. After winning by a landslide in December's election, the president's approval rating is now barely 20 percent. With technology, activists also became more potent protesters, sending out messages urging friends to meet up at demonstrations and warning them when the police started to make arrests. They didn't just shout slogans - they took pictures, quickly posting them on the Internet - going from activists to citizen journalists. Some websites went from 40 million pages viewed a day to 200 million. However, there is the need to weed through biased opinions and inaccurate reports. One citizen journalist said it wasn't easy to post pictures or videos on the Internet which went against the popular flow. [Lee Gwi-Jin, Citizen Journalist]: If we post any pictures representing the government's opinion or any pictures showing the demonstrator's violence, many say we're working for the ruling party -- even if we always try to report impartially. I feel at a loss with the situation. It just proves the Internet is powerful, if not unwieldy.

'Mad Cow' Fears in South Korea'Mad Cow' Fears in South Korea

June 07, 2008

CHEN: Fifty thousand South Korean protesters start a 72-hour relay protest. They are against a government move to resume imports of U.S. beef that they say are dangerous. STORY: Thousands of people, worried about mad cow disease have held daily protests. They're accusing President Lee of kowtowing to Washington with the beef deal and ignoring safety concerns. The organizers of the candle-lit vigil said 50,000 people were at the rally in downtown Seoul. The already week-long protest wants U.S. beef imports stopped. These protesters say they hope the government will pay attention. [Kim Hyun-lin, Protester]: "We want to use this opportunity to highlight our opinions to the government, that we will not just sit idle and watch what the government is doing. I'm here to add support to the cause and raise my voice more loudly." [Na Kyung-se, Protester]: "This government is not listening to our requests in this rally and it's not taking any serious measures. The government just expects the protests will die down sooner or later if the rallies are blocked." President Lee Myung-bak has been clearly caught by surprise by the protests as his popularity has plummeted over the decision. Lee's conservative ruling party suffered a crushing defeat in local by-elections yesterday. To calm public anger, the government says it will not allow imports of meat from older U.S. cattle, which the public sees as more dangerous. Before the import ban in 2003, South Korea imported over 200,000 tons of U.S. beef a year, the biggest destination after Japan and Mexico. The United States says it is willing to work with its Asian ally, but there was no need to renegotiate the deal. Wonder Girls. Irony. Edited version. Translated lyrics: You keep saying 'for the first time' too much You say you've never had feelings like this but your words aren't convincing You say I'm different compared to other girls but you sound suspicious Just my knowing of your ex's is a handful You say those girls don't mean anything to you but it doesn't sound right So what did those girls you use to date mean to you, you're not making any sense You say guys can't be trusted, but you say you're different, what is that suppose to mean? (Irony) It doesn't make sense (Irony) It doesn't make sens (Irony) It doesn't make sense, It really doesn't make sense You say you played all your ex girlfriends, and you tell me that I'm different, what is that suppose to mean? (Irony) It doesn't make sense (Irony) It doesn't make sense (Irony) It doesn't make sense, It really doesn't make sense You say bad things about other guy You telling me every little detail is very weird Why do you keep telling me bad things about your friends You say you're the only one not like that, sounds a little wierd Your friends all hang out together, does it make sense Your friends are over there like that, but you're the only one thats not You say guys cannot be trusted, but you say you're different, what is that suppose to mean? (Irony) It doesn't make sense (Irony) It doesn't make sense (Irony) It doesn't make sense, It really doesn't make sense You say you played all your ex girlfriends, but you tell me I'm different, what is that suppose to mean? Koreas agree to end Korean WarKoreas agree to end Korean War
from Where's the Outrage?
October 04, 2007

There has been no greater example that has debunked the Muscular Amero-centric Bush policy of my way or the highway than North Korea. The Bush Administration threw out the Agreement Framework of the Clinton administration. They began the inflammatory finger pointing. They refused to talk with North Korea. North Korea escalated their nuclear program and threw out the IAEA. North Korean exploded something. John Bolton was removed from the negotiation process. Christopher Hill began to actually talk with North Korea. The hard neocons - Rumsfeld and Cheney - got fired or marginalized and magically North Korea began to come around. Yesterday an agreement of economic cooperation was signed. As important, is an agreement to end the Korean War. South Korean never signed that treaty. I think that this is a significant development.  Kind of like where we were at the end of the Clinton administration before Bush screwed it up. From USAToday: The South Korean president signed a commitment with North Korea Thursday to seek a formal end to the Korean War, ending a historic three-day summit during which he was snubbed by his host and upstaged by a nuclear agreement 600 miles away in Beijing. South Korea never signed the cease fire that ended hostilities in the 1950-53 Korean War; so the two Koreas have remained technically at war ever since. In their declaration Thursday in the northern capital Pyongyang, South Korean President Roh Moo Hyun and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il agreed to pursue a permanent peace. South Korea has said it will need to work with the other combatants in the Korean war — China and the United States — to reach a formal peace deal. President Bush has said there can be no permanent peace on the Korean peninsula until North Korea gives up nuclear arms.
