Day Game - Letus EX1 Panning Time Lapse - Fenway Park
from Vimeo / Recent Public Videos April 25, 2008
Day Game - Letus EX1 Panning Time Lapse - Fenway Park from Tom Guilmette on Vimeo. I decided that I would do another time lapse at Fenway Park from the same spot I did my first panning time lapse. This time, I had fixed my back focus on the Letus Extreme and it was a day game. The first thing I did was to secure the tripod to the railing in the camera platform. It was very windy. The highest gusts I had ever experienced while shooting in the new section occurred on this day. The camera took a few hits from wind blasts. The second thing I had learned from past experience was that auto white trace was not good for six hour time lapses, especially at night. The color temperature changed a few times during the day and into the night. I now set the preset white balance on the camera to a happy medium. In this case, I was shooting during the daytime hours, so I set the white balance to 5200 K. I used my Celestron Nexstar 114GT telescope motorized pan head for the very slow pans. This system worked really well and I had modified it so that I could mount my Sony PMW-EX1 XDCAM to it with the Letus rail system. I really, really, really wanted a day with puffy white clouds. I hoped for it and framed the time lapse accordingly. As you will see, I only had a few clouds in the sky during the first hour of the time lapse. The rest of the day was under completely blue skies. I had hoped to capture dramatic cloud movement during the elapsed time. Like I said before, I will try again later... One other obstacle I ran into was a problem with my Letus Extreme. I had replaced the battery for the spinning motor that vibrated the ground glass inside the contraption. The problem was, the motor would not start. I had to fix this by opening up the Letus and manually starting the motor with my finger. I guess it had gotten slightly “gummed up” and need some help to get moving. I hope this does not become problematic in the future. This time lapse was set from 10:30am to 4:30pm eastern time. The total elapsed time was about six hours. Take a look at my blog for more information on how I set this system up and fixed the motor on the Letus. TRT: 1:17 seconds I have a detailed explanation with pictures of this setup on my blog.
