On November 20, 2009 Westin St. Francis workers were interviewed who were on a 3 day strike against the Westin chain for refusing to negotiate a union contract without major concessions. The hotel is demanding large increases in healthcare benefit costs for the 650 workers whose average income is $30,000 a year. On November 18, 2009, a delegate assembly of United Teachers Of Richmond UTR-CTA was held in San Pablo . It took place after a rigged vote by the UTR president who manipulated the election in favor of a concession contract. UTR members and activists spoke about the contract, the drive for charter privatization by the UTR-CTA and state CTA leadership and the illegal manipulation of the contract vote with the calling of the police by the President Pixie Hayward Schiclele to arrest union members who were at the union hall to protect the ballots. On October 29, 2009 Tokyo union organizer of dispatch workers or temporary workers Chie Matsumoto was interviewed at a rally to change the dispatch laws in Japan. Chie Matsumoto also worked as a journalist is helping to defend Japanese Dispatch workers who are fired and discriminated against with no union protection or senority. The present Japanese law has allowed the expansion of these temporary workers and a growing exploitation of these workers in the workplace not only at shopping chains like the 99yen shops but at major industrial and commercial companies in Japan. Chie also talks about her experience working as a journalist for the major national newspaper Asahi Shimbun where she was layed off after writing about the conditions of temporary workers in Japan.
