From : Enterprise Leadership Podcasts for the CIO
In 2005, when Warren Bennis, the author of several best-selling management books and a professor at the University of Southern California, gave a talk at Harvard Business School, he asked the audience how many knew what the blogosphere was. One third of the audience raised their hands to acknowledge their familiarity with the term. In his latest book, Transparency: How Leaders Create a Culture of Candor, Bennis takes on the world of social networking and the world of transacting business across virtual borders. His premise is simple: if companies are going to succeed today, they must be as transparent as possible. Whether companies like it or not, blogging is here to stay. Bennis says that the CEO of Starbucks tunes into blogs to learn what employees in the company's 15,000 stores are feeling, thinking about, and doing. He says, "If companies can't handle transparency, then someone else will come out with the news ahead of them, or offend them, or surprise them."

 From : David Lee King
Think it s only geeky librarians like me that use social media tools like Twitter or YouTube or wikis, and your community isn t really there yet? Think again. Here are two examples of people in my local community (Topeka, KS), engaging with others via new-fangled social media tools (both discovered via the vanity feeds set up for my library): Example #1: Dancing Teens, Twitter, and YouTube This morning, I saw Chris Abraham s tweet saying this: These super friendly high school dancing girls are going to YouTube to get ideas for dance routines. Social Media rocks here in Topeka, Kansas! And his Qik video and blog post of the event (Qik video embedded below): Yes, the girls were practicing their dance routine at Topeka s Starbucks (I try to never be seen dancing in public but that s another story entirely So what do we have? One guy, passing through town creating live video, blogging about it, and twittering about it. About two teenagers that use YouTube NOT for entertainment, but to find dance choreography ideas. Example #2: Technology Planning in Topeka A local newspaper columnist asked Topeka techies (using a wiki, no less) this question: How do we make Topeka a better community by using technology? That is the question I address to you. Join me in a public discussion and offer your suggestions and let s collaborate to make Topeka a better place. Yes, people in your community are already connecting and engaging with others via social media tools. Are you? photo: http://flickr.com/photos/chrisabraham/2800383966/ Share:

 From : David Lee King
You HAVE to watch the amazing cool music video Michael Porter and I made!!! Here it is: And go to Michael s blip.tv account for a larger version of the video. Want the MP3? Find it here and at last.fm Go read Michael s post for the nitty-gritty details (and this post for the lyrics and credits). Here are some song details This was a really fun song to write and record. I honestly wasn t sure Michael s idea would work when he first suggested it to me, but then I m game for just about anything, so thought let s try it and see what happens! And Michael s a great friend and writing partner (we write the Public Libraries Magazine column Internet Spotlight together), so if everything else went down the tubes, I knew we would at least have a fun time of it. But as we started writing the lyrics, rhythms and melody lines started bouncing around in my head and I realized this would be easy to pull off. Other details: The music is a mix of GarageBand instruments, my own guitar playing, and three samples of theremins and other whistle-like sounds. And Michael Porter and I sang/rapped the thing recorded and mixed in Garageband, in my basement Samples used: Spooky whistle G#3 Ghost Fx theremin low to very high all found on freesound.org Share:

From : Hot Fossils and Rebel Matters
Born in October 2007, released in alpha to the public only this summer, Seesmic is another social networking tool. It is unlike YouTube or podcasting in the sense that it interactive and considered by the creators and participants to be more intimate than any of twitter, facebook, or chat. With Seesmic, you can visually converse with your cyberfriends and colleagues. How is it different or the same from Webcam conversations or another new videoconferencing tool, OovOO? Well we'll have to see what it has to offer in the coming months. In the meantime, I spent about forty-five minutes with Tiil, an artist and Seesmic zealot during Podcamp Boston in July to get his enthusiastic testimonial about Seesmic. Wiki page for Seesmic: http://wiki.seesmic.com/Main_Page Tiil's website : http://www.tiil.us Tiil's hair cut : http://www.tiil.us/seesmic/hair-cut Seesmic blog : http://seesmic.typepad.com/en/ Seemic owner's blog : http://www.loiclemeur.com/ OOvOO : http://www.oovoo.org/ Famous Hollywood celebrities mentioned: Steven Speilberg, Harrison Ford. Famous New Media celebrities mentioned : Chris Brogan, Freida the retired art teacher who was involved in new media in the 80s. Other video messaging tools mentioned : OovOO. Famous Investors mentioned: Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis (who sold Skype to Ebay). Tags: seesmic oovoo loic le meur social networking micro blogging web 2.0

 From : EdTechTalk.com
Listen to a lively conversation about how to use Shelfari-- or how to get a similar site built -- to create a social networking site for students to share their book logs, reviews, and recommendations with each other. Susan Ettenheim and Paul Allison (and Lee Baber in the chat room) welcomed: Amanda, the Community Manager at Shelfari Bill Fitzgerald, our open-source friend and web developer from Funny Monkey Wesley Fryer, who blogs and podcasts at Moving at the Speed of Creativity Earlier this summer, Susan Ettenheim began to work with the folks at Shelfari to see about using their social reading site in her school. Wesley Fryer noticed her interest and detailed a quest he has to find or build a social networking site for young readers. He wrote that he wants Netflix functionality... the site should offer the following features: The website should be free for anyone to register for and use, but minors should be required to obtain parental consent to comply with COPPA and other relevant laws as described above. The site should permit users to RATE books they've read, from one to five stars, just like NetFlix. The site should let users write book reviews and recommendations that can be public and/or sent directly to friends, just like NetFlix. The site should let users maintain lists of friends, and view what those friends report they are currently reading, as well as their friends' recommendations for books to read. The site should use AI technologies (or whatever you call the technologies that can do this sort of thing) to dynamically generate book recommendations for an individual based on the books s/he has already rated in the system. A Quest for NetFlix Plus Functionality for Books - for Young Readers! Bill Fitgerald responded with A Blueprint for a Site for Young Readers : Here's how I'd go about building that site using Drupal. The main functional requirements: These requirements are pulled and paraphrased from Wes' post; any that I have added are italicized. COPPA compliant -- no personal data collected from minors without the prior consent of an adult; Readers can rate books they have read; Readers can create lists of friends; these friendships can be one way, or reciprocal; Readers can write reviews on books; these reviews can be shared publicly, or privately between friends; The site should recommend books to readers based on their likes and dislikes of other books; Readers should be able to see what their friends are reading, and any reviews/recommendations of their friends; Readers should be able to keep a reading log on the site; this reading log should have the ability to be public or private; Readers should be able to form public and private groups/communities. There are other features that will need attention, of course; for example, a site like this will require a detail-rich user profile page, and pages for recent recommendations, featured books, featured readers, etc. That's where our conversation began! From : The Spike Nesmith Rage Machine
In this premiere episode for Radio Six International, our hero discusses... waaait for it... waaaaiiiiit for iiiiit.... the American Presidential Election! (well, YOU fill an hour.) Was Obama's trip to Europe and the middle east eclipsed, in the opinion of people who can actually vote for him, by McCain's podunk tour of the flyover states? He chastises the British media for their pronunciation of "Barrick" Obama. And write down the date! Spike says something complimentary about George Bush! This one's a keeper! There's the price of oil (be nice, this is a new audience, they've not heard this guff before) and could it be? Really? A politician doing something nice? Hmm... maybe, maybe not. Britain's Channel 4 incurs the wrath of the regulatory body for showing a skewed anti-global warming documentary, and what's the right way to respond to pokes and requests on Facebook? Speaking of, joineth thou the Rage Machine Facebook Group. NOW! RIGHT NOW! DO IT! http:/...

From : Enterprise Leadership Podcasts for the CIO
Barry Libert, a social media visionary and the founder of Shared Insights (now Mzinga), knows how to use technology to harness the power of what he calls the crowd. Mzinga provides software as a service solutions for online communities. It currently manages about 14,000 communities, and services more than one billion monthly page requests from 27 million users in 160 countries worldwide. Libert is currently chairman of the board of Mzinga. He and his co-authors set up a community and enlisted members to contribute to a book called, We are Smarter Than Me: How to Unleash the Power of Crowds in Your Business. In fact, this is the first book on the subject that actually used an online community, based on a Web 2.0 technology from Mzinga, to help create the book. About 4,000 qualified members joined the online community and helped shape the final product. By using the same social networking tools and techniques that their book covers, Libert and his co-authors could provide practical and unique look at online community building.
