1999 Frizette Stakes - Surfside -vs- Darling My Darling

In the Frizette, another wire-to-wire performance was given by Surfside, who fought a duel down the stretch with Darling My Darling. She seemed to surrender the lead in the final furlong, but regained it with a second effort directed by Pat Day, and won by a head. It was the third victory in four starts for Surfside, and the sixth in the Frizette for her trainer, D. Wayne Lukas. She is a daughter of Seattle Slew and Flanders, and she promptly set her sights on Chilukki, the undefeated West Coast filly who won her fifth straight on Saturday. ''I was concerned about the weather,'' Lukas said. ''But I think she won on class and breeding. Unless something comes up in the next 30 days, I have no excuses.'' Race video donated by Jeff Mende.. 1998 Jim Beam Stakes

Event of the Year stretched his winning streak to four yesterday when he won the $600,000 Jim Beam Stakes at Turfway Park by five lengths. He heads for the Kentucky Derby with a perfect record, just as his sire, Seattle Slew, did 21 years ago. The race had been postponed one day after windstorms knocked down three light towers that fed power to the track, which is in Florence, in northern Kentucky. But Event of the Year, lightly raced but very successful in his first three starts at Bay Meadows in California, took the delay and his change in geography in stride. He went off the 3-5 favorite, bided his time under Russell Baze, rolled out of the final turn and shot into the lead. He won by five lengths. Yarrow Brae was second and Truluck third in the field of 10. Event of the Year ran the mile and an eighth in 1:47 flat, just two-fifths of a second off the track record, set in the Jim Beam in 1991 by Hansel. Along the way, some fast fractions were set by Yukon Pete and other leaders, who sprinted half a mile in 451/5 seconds and one mile in 1:342/5 . Event of the Year, a dark bay colt owned by Betty and John Mabee of Golden Eagle Farm in California, will go to Louisville after just four races and only one as a juvenile. During the race, Time Limit and Sorceror broke down with fractured left forelegs that were later described as career-ending injuries. Time Limit, winner of the Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream Park two months ago, is owned by William T. Young and trained by D. Wayne Lukas, and Sorceror is trained by Jack Van Berg for James McIngvale. 1989 Breeders Cup Classic - Sunday Silence -vs- Easy Goer

Sunday Silence grittily held off a desperate late charge by Easy Goer to win the $3 million Breeders' Cup Classic by a neck today at Gulfstream Park. The tight finish of this fourth meeting between the decade's greatest racing rivals brought a crowd of more than 50,000 to a roar and settled the sport's major titles. Sunday Silence, who had beaten Easy Goer in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness before Easy Goer trounced him in the Belmont Stakes, is assured of being voted thoroughbred racing's Horse of the Year. Emotions ran high long after the official sign was posted. For Sunday Silence's backers and handlers, this was a long-awaited day of vindication. After the Belmont, their colt had been widely dismissed as only second-best despite holding a 2-1 edge in the rivalry. For Easy Goer's many fans, who made him the 1-2 betting favorite today, the result was flabbergasting. They found some excuses for him, but were devastated to see their colt emerge from this season as merely the second-best 3-year-old instead of being acclaimed as the champion of the decade. It was small consolation for Easy Goer's connections, the Ogden Phipps family and the trainer Shug McGaughey, that they won two of the six earlier Cup races today, with Rhythm in the Juvenile and Dancing Spree in the Sprint. Sunday Silence, a 3-year-old son of Halo and the Understanding mare Wishing Well, paid $6 for $2 to win as the second choice in the Classic betting and ran the mile and a quarter in 2:00 1/5 under Chris McCarron, who was riding him for the first time. Sunday Silence is owned by Arthur Hancock 3d, Ernest Gaillard and Charlie Whittingham, and trained by Whittingham. ''He's a great horse,'' Whittingham said, ''and he's far from done racing.'' Blushing John finished a length behind the top two in third, with Present Value 9 3/4 lengths back in fourth in a field of eight. Sunday Silence earned $1.35 million in victory and has now banked $4.6 million, the third-highest total in racing history, while winning 8 of 12 career starts. Easy Goer also passed the $4 million threshold in defeat while losing for just the fifth time in 17 career starts. Neither colt has ever finished anywhere but first or second. Both are scheduled to race again next year as 4-year-olds and will be pointed toward a final rematch in next year's Breeders' Cup Classic, which will be run at Belmont Park on Oct. 27. Pat Day, who rode Easy Goer today, said his colt may have lost the race because he hesitated at a gap in the chute after breaking from post 1. McGaughey was more concerned that the colt fell so far back after that. ''He dropped farther out of it than I thought he would,'' the trainer said. ''He looked like he was climbing up the backstretch.'' Sunday Silence got the jump on Easy Goer, settling into third place as Slew City Slew led Blushing John through quick early fractions of 22 2/5, 46 1/5 and 1:10 2/5. Sunday Silence advanced gradually into second behind Blushing John after a mile in 1:35, then inched to the lead. Easy Goer, 11 lengths back after half a mile, got within a half-length of Sunday Silence after six furlongs, but then fell four lengths back with a furlong to go. ''I would have won it another stride or two,'' Day said. ''I had plenty of horse left,'' McCarron countered. ''We won comfortably.'' Cigar - 1995 Woodward Stakes + Post Race

Cigar stalked the pace set by Nick Zito's Star Standard for half a mile, then made his move as they rounded the far turn. With command, with style, he shot past Schossberg, he glided past Star Standard, and by the head of the homestretch he was widening his lead for one more formidable finish. As he crossed the wire for his eighth victory in eight races this year, he had 2 3/4 lengths on Star Standard, who had three lengths on Golden Larch. And then came Schossberg, winner of the Iselin Handicap and second in the betting at 5-1 odds but fourth in the short field of six. Cigar ran the mile and an eighth in 1:47 flat and won $300,000, raising his career earnings past $3 million, with some huge purses coming up: the $750,000 in the Jockey Club Gold Cup on Oct. 7, the $3 million for the Breeders' Cup Classic and the $4 million for the new invitational race planned for next March in the Persian Gulf emirate of Dubai. He also returned $2.20 for a $2 bet to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. "Cigar has a lot of quality," said Pat Day, the rider on Star Standard. "And he's not ducking anyone." "He's the most dominant horse in the country," said Richie Migliore, who rode Golden Larch. "He showed what he is made of." Allen Paulson, who owns Cigar and named him for an aviation checkpoint in the Gulf of Mexico, beamed and said, "Jerry said it took 80 percent out of him, with more left in the tank." And Bailey said, "If Mr. Mott and Mr. Paulson want to run this horse on the moon, I'll be there." William Mott, the trainer, didn't rule out the moon. But he said he and Paulson are now leaning toward the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont on Oct. 7. "We'll monitor him in the next two or three weeks," the trainer said. "If he's doing this well come entry time for the Gold Cup, we'll go in that direction. He's had two and a half months off, so he should be a fresh horse."
