If Windows Azure was the big topic on day 1 of the PDC conference in LA. For me Silverlight 4 was certainly the big topic of day 2. Scott Guthrie introduced Silverlight 4 during the keynote and showed some of the enhancements that are being introduced to the new version of the platform. Tim Heuer has done a great job blogging Silverlight 4 Beta – A complete guide to the new features this blog post includes all the tools you need to download to build on Silverlight 4 so I recommend you start there. In addition to this a number of other resources have been made available as well during PDC: Channel 9 Launched a Silverlight 4 Training Course The Silverlight 4 Training Course includes hands-on-labs, a video and a whitepaper designed to help you learn about the new features in Silverlight 4 focusing on three major areas: Enabling Business Application Development, Empowering Richer Experiences and Moving Beyond the Browser. During the keynote Scott (attempted) to preview a sneak peak of publishing smooth streaming video content from IIS to an iphone leveraging the HTML 5 video/ tag. Joe Stegman, Director of Program Management on the Silverlight team, joins us to discuss Silverlight 4's Out of Browser improvements (OOB means you can run Silverlight applications on the desktop, outside of, well, the browser...). Of note, you can now interop with COM objects in SL4's OOB. We also touch on the the future of Silverlight and clearly define the distinctions/differences between Silverlight and WPF. When to use SL? NBC Sports will announce plans today to use Microsoft Silverlight as the Web software for Web viewing the Winter Olympics Games in the United States. We have been impressed with the latest use of Silverlight by NBC for Sunday Night Football. We look forward to watching the Olympics online. Although, we expect that due the the Pacific time zone, many live competitions will be delayed.What's next for Silverlight is downloadable files, videos saved to the the computers, according to Microsoft's Brian Goldfarb, who was a participant in last month's Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable. He explains this in this video. Although NBC is using Silverlight, virtually all the world's broadcasters will be carrying the Winter Olympics in Flash. (We expect that Silverlight will be used in France and a handful of other other countries.)The Next Battle: Video on the Smart PhoneAdobe, having achieved ubiquity on the the world's computers with Flash, will have Flash installed on nearly all smart phones in the United States, except the iPhone. Speaking at the panel, and second in this video, is Adobe's Bill Rusitzky.
