July 07, 2008

Tuesday July 8th marks a new era for Star Wars collectibles as 500 Star Wars fans will be able to purchase the first product from eFX Collectibles-the retouched version of Master Replicas' Stormtrooper Helmet. The mold is the same, the grill is a little cleaned up, and the base is totally different. Star Wars Action News has a hands on review of this product so you can make your final decision to whip out that credit card. Plus have you ever wished to have a vintage mint-on-card collection? If you've ever looked on eBay or at your local convention for vintage carded figures every so often you are faced with the question-is that a fake? Our vintage expert Kevin takes a look at professionally recarded vintage figures to give you the lowdown on this niche, sometimes mistakenly bought, collectible. Also this week we have plenty of news, from a review of the Wizard World con, a high-end item over 50% off hidden in the back of Toys R Us, discuss all the old items hanging out on the pegs and the few street-date breaking leaks of new toys. We preview the upcoming BIG BOOK Star Wars Frames, and run down the latest announcements from Sideshow Collectibles. With Steve updating us with his latest UK report, a slew of listener voicemails, and more; it's on this week's Star Wars Action News! And for those of you going to San Diego Comic Con we announce our plans on this episode for our Star Wars Action News dinner 8 p.m. in San Diego, followed by a SWAN line party at the Toys R Us in Mission Bay. Stay tuned for more details about dinner locations and how to RSVP.

June 23, 2008

This week, the Star Wars Action News hosts are seeing red. They're red hopping mad, you might even say. Why? Because the new exclusive TIE Fighter "has got some red on ya" (to quote Shaun of the Dead). Yes, someone graffitied a big red garish Rebel symbol on the latest "big wing" TIE Fighter re-release, and they jacked up the price too, $53 at Entertainment Earth. Is this too much for the 4th release of this mold? Have we now got more TIE Fighters than the compliment of a Super Star Destroyer? Find out on this week's show! We also discuss this week how the new Wal Mart exclusive Droid Factory figures and Comic Book two packs are hitting shelves, with voice mail reports from listeners. We review the new collectible 10 volume hardcover Star Wars book collection from Dark Horse, and we discuss how we think Titan magazine's business model is somewhat flawed, punishing the good customers and rewarding the disloyal. With a UK segment, a Hasbro QnA, and more, it's all on this week's Star Wars Action News!

Still frothing at the mouth for new toys, the Star Wars Action News team gathered again this week to look at the upcoming July releases from Hasbro. After focusing on the vehicles last episode, this episode the group talks about the new figures of both The Legacy Collection and The Clone Wars toy lines. Which do the team want more, animated style or non? Will the animated figures sell to kids? And what is Hasbro trying to pull with sending e-mails saying figures won't go on clearance, only to be found on clearance days later? Also listen to find out where to get the 16th (and final?) Clone Wars character key (from the first Clone Wars animated series), and to hear Kevin review and discuss another vintage figure, one I'm sure vintage collectors will remember. All this and more on this week's Star Wars Action News.

July 26th is getting closer and closer (and to see how close check out all the nifty new countdown timers at swactionnews.com) and the excitement is palpable for new toys. None of the new toys has gotten the buzz as the new vehicles, and with Hasbro previewing the instruction sheets this past week even the buzz has buzz. The Star Wars Action News staff convenes for their first roundtable discussion of the season to discuss these upcoming vehicles, and will return next week with another roundtable to discuss the figures. We also have a call from Rusty in Orlando updating us to the Star Wars Weekends fun at Disney, and talk about how you can own an actual piece of the Captain Rex prop from the Star Tours ride. With a review of the Hoth Patrol TRU Battle Pack, discussion on where to find all the shadow-y Saga Legends figures, and Star Wars fun in general, it's Star Wars Action News.

Over at Amazon.com's Target store the Jungle Rancor (which is called the Battle Rancor on the box) is still in stock. Star Wars Action News ordered some and they were delivered this week. Will there be a rumble in the Felucian jungle, or are these battle-painted beasties best left on store shelves? We review the Rancor and his rider this week. Also this week, items are starting to show up in the new Clone Wars packing. Star Wars Action News staff member Kevin has found some at his local Target and he calls in with a report and some photos! With Scott From Tulsa reminding you of all the upcoming pre-orders, Nathan P. Butler answering the age-old question "Where do I start reading the EU?", Steve updating us on collecting in the UK, and a tribute to Harvey Korman, you'll find it all on this week's Star Wars Action News.
Show #0019 - Mr. Biggs Tweaks the Promotions CalendarShow #0019 - Mr. Biggs Tweaks the Promotions Calendar
from Ask Mr. Biggs! Recycling real talk radio phone calls since 2006.
May 28, 2008

In this episode we learn that Mr. Biggs. . . Feels strongly about matching pipe and joint sizes. Extols the expertise of computer manufacturer-provided technical assistance workers. Has doubts about gender authenticity in the celebrity impersonation industry. Uses popular promotions to stimulate customer activity. Laments the flavor degradation of slightly over-cooked coffee. Questions the feasibility of keeping specialty beverage consumption accessories on hand. DOWNLOAD SHOW #0019 HERE A fictitious, small town radio call-in talk show. Mr. Biggs, a local bigshot business owner/character, helps callers with all kinds of problems. A simple concept, to be sure. But there's a fun little twist. Caller audio comes from real calls lifted from real talk radio shows. We remove the original host from the conversation, re-arrange the parts a bit, and insert Mr. Biggs as the new "host." The results are very seamless and comical, but not in ways you might think. We try not to go for easy laughs, but rather for a more subtle, nuanced, character-driven humor. The podcast is produced by a couple of audio nuts, so the sound quality of the show is as good as you'll hear anywhere. Very clean and realistic. The calls are integrated with great care and precision. In fact, listeners to the podcast often never realize that the calls have been taken from other un-related sources. As you well know, there's a lot of podcasts out there, but not a lot of originality. We think we're doing something unique.

The final five Saga Legends are an elusive bunch, perhaps because so many of them are "Shadow" troopers they stay well hidden. Despite their best attempts at camouflage Star Wars Action News spotted some this week. They review the figures chosen to be rereleased as well as their special coins. We also talk about the latest for Galactic Heroes packs to be released, with new Jedi and new clones! Also this week, Kevin brings us another vintage figure review. Which figure from your childhood is being discussed? Listen to find out. We also have a Hasbro QnA discussing the conflicts between San Diego Comic Con and the release of the new Star Wars toys, Scott from Tulsa gives us an update on his latest store runs, and Arnie reviews the book the Secret History of Star Wars. And listen for your chance to win one of two copies of the last Legacy of the Force novel Invincible, autographed by author Troy Denning.

May 19, 2008

This week on Star Wars Action News, it's episode 1-4-3 and as those of you with old school pagers know, 1-4-3 means "I love you." As such, the hosts of Star Wars Action News take some time this week to remember why they love Star Wars and Star Wars collecting. In addition, last Tuesday saw the release of the final Legacy of the Force novel, Invincible by Troy Denning. Brock finished the book and provides a spoiler-free review, and Arnie sat down with Troy Denning at Borders in Oak Brook, IL to discuss some of the book's plot points. If you've read Invincible this is an interview not to miss! (and if you've not read Invincible, save this show in a special location on your hard drive to listen to as soon as you finish the final page). With a poll of the week, Scott From Tulsa's store report, and an update on Red 5's charity walk, we really hope you enjoy this week's Star Wars Action News.

It's a great time to be a Star Wars fan, isn't it? There's not one but two toy lines hovering in the not so distant future, Star Wars returns to theaters in August overcoming all expectations, and there's a brand new collectibles company, eFX, breaking onto the scene. As such, listeners of Star Wars Action News direct the conversations for this week's show. We discuss some preferred method of storing loose figures, a re-edited version of Star Wars, some classic Star Wars records, and the trio of Lego Star Wars Nintendo DS Lunchboxes. Also this week we discuss the new exclusive items from Sideshow Collectibles and Nathan P. Butler (author of the Star Wars Tales issue "Equals And Opposites" which will have a comic book 2-pack coming out soon!) giving us an expanded universe update. And remember, the Star Wars Action News bookclub is taking sign-ups now to join us in reading Jedi Search by Kevin J. Anderson. On this week's Star Wars Action News podcast we come to you from the Pittsburgh Comicon 2008 where the Star Wars Action News hosts held panels on Star Wars collecting. We report on the con and scour the vendors' booths for any Star Wars items available. Also this week, everyone knows that keeping a large carded figure collection can take a lot of space. A LOT of space. We look at the options of loosing some of those figures from their cards and ways to store the figures in a safe way. Finally we have a double dose of vintage as Darth Gawth continues reviewing vintage mint-on-card figures in his collection, and Darth Bounty informs us about the ancestors of the Titanium figures, Kenner's first die-cast Star Wars vehicle line. And with a Hasbro QnA that puts the Aayla Secura decal sheet issue to bed once and for all, this is a Star Wars Action News not to be missed!
