Daily Show: Bush’s All-Star Team of Liars and Deceivers
from Crooks and Liars July 23, 2008
After John Ashcroft s testimony last week in which he bobbed and weaved his way around answering every question about what he did during his time in the White House, Jon Stewart and John Oliver compare Bush and his merry band of obfuscators to other American Presidential liars in order to make a historical comparison. Needless to say, the Bush team is in a league of its own. Download | Play Download | Play Oliver: I just hope everyone at home appreciates the magnitude of what they re witnessing here. For 7 straight years, this administration has been untouchable in hearings. These guys are the 27 Yankees of dodging questions. The 55 Dodgers of yanking Congress chain. They re the right stuff of wrong stuff. John, this is once in a generation bullsh*t. Steart: You really think this admininstration is that good at this? John: Sure, look, we can quibble at the level of competetition. You can criticize the strength of their opponents lets face it, the Democrats have been pathetic. But you still can t help but be impressed at the level of skills on display. I won t be surprised if in years to come they describe these hearings as the Immaculate Deception. I truly can t wait to see those jerseys hanging from the rafters. Digg It!

Daily Show: Obama, McCain and the Dobbs-O-Meter
from Crooks and Liars July 18, 2008
Considering Lou Dobbs hates everything foreign, you know Obama and McCain s respective speeches to The National Council of LaRaza would make his head explode. Obama s appeal for multilingualism reached especially dangerous levels on the Dobbs-O-Meter. Download | Play Download | Play Last week both candidates spent a lot of time wooing Latino Americans by speaking to various Hispanic interest groups. How did they fare? Well, the best way to measure success in wooing the Latino community is by using the Dobbs-O-Meter. The angrier Lou Dobbs gets, the better you re doing

Daily Show: Bush vs. Bernanke on the Economy
from Crooks and Liars July 17, 2008
..or Fantasy vs. Reality on the Strength of the Economy For my money, this is when The Daily Show is at it s best. Last night, Jon juxtaposed President Bush s rosy (and wholly unrealistic) appraisal of the economy with Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke s much more sobering (and frightening) Congressional testimony, and noted that President Bush accidentally scheduled his press conference for the same time as Bernanke s testimony, certainly not knowing it would overshadow it. Download | Play Download | Play One is like a glass-half-full kind of guy and the other is an expert on the economy.

Daily Show: Beware the Rogue Surrogates
from Crooks and Liars July 15, 2008
After a long two-week hiatus during which I didn t know what to do with myself from 11pm to midnight Jon Stewart and his crack Daily Show staff had a lot to catch up on Monday night. Luckily for them, there was no shortage of absurdities to mock, ranging from Phil Gramm s demeaning remarks about American whiners to the Viagra/birth control conundrum Carly Fiorina got McCain embroiled in. It s nice to have you back, Jon. Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather) By the way did you know that while we were gone for two weeks the Presidential race was not suspended? Not only that, they ratcheted the f*#%-ups by releasing the surrogates. As you know only two men can run for President at any one time and obviously they can t be everywhere. They re not Mario Lopez for God s sake. So they have friends, surrogates, meat-puppets if you will, people who can amplify their message across a broad range of media. Transcript below the fold: By the way did you know that while we were gone for two weeks the Presidential race was not suspended? Not only that they ratcheted the f*#%-ups by releasing the surrogates. As you know only two men can run for President at any one time and obviously they can t be everywhere. They re not Mario Lopez for God s sake. So they have friends, surrogates, meat-puppets if you will, people who can amplify their message across a broad range of media. Uh in the case of Senator John McCain, his surrogate s job, to ease voters concerns over traditional Republican weak spots, like the economy when people are suffering the GOP can occasionally appear callous, dismissive of real people s needs while seemingly unwilling to lend a helping hand to regular folk because they re too busy, uh, cupping Exxon s balls. So they send out people like Phil Gramm, John McCain s chief economic advisor to talk to an editorial board, as the one at the Washington Times to let Americans know John McCain feels their pain. [Cut to video.] You read more about the Phil Gramm influenced McCain plan to fix the economy in his new position paper, Walk It Off America, My Ten Point Plan For You P%#%@es To Learn To Suck It Up. Seriously, what Phil, this is uh Phil Gramm s comment is offensive in two ways. One, it s insensitive, and two, how s an economic expert not understand that most of our whining jobs have already gone to India? Now, you know they don t do it cheaper they do it better. After something like that the McCain campaign needs another surrogate to go out and kill off the first surrogate. Uh..it s like an adoption. You adopt a kid it doesn t work out you got to adopt a bigger kid to muscle the other kid out of the house. Am I right is that how it wha wha ? I m not a good parent. So here we go former CEO of Hewlitt Packard Carly Fiorina. [Cut to video.] In your face Gramm! Carly Fiorina will be talking for John McCain from now on. Not just about economic issues. Issues that are important to women like last Wednesday when she said There are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but they Won t cover birth control medication. Those women would like a choice. She speaks for, she speaks for you. She speaks for you, right John McCain?

Daily Show: Terror Attack + Election = Republican Victory
from Crooks and Liars June 25, 2008
In light of Charlie Black s ridiculous and revealing comments to Fortune magazine Monday, Jon Stewart shows how Republicans are calculating their winning November strategy. Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather) Why is it that a terror attack helps Republicans? Well, it s quite simple. A terror attack, when added to an election, equals Republican. Why is that? Let s show our work. First we have to solve for R. Now, if you add 7 1/2 years of Republican administration, times the five years we ve been at war, which has divided the nation, add in the government s incompetent response to the domestic disaster of Katrina, minus the equity in your home thats disappeared, plus the price of oil squared, over the boon that the Iraq war has been to terrorist recruiting, times tortue, minus the resoucres we could have been using in Afghanistan, plus the resources we could have been using to catch bin Laden, carry the Cheney and . Daily Show: Guantanamo Baywatch and the SCOTUS Decision
from Crooks and Liars June 20, 2008
Jon Stewart reports on the recent SCOTUS decision granting Gitmo detainees the right to contest their imprisonment in federal court, and in the process mocks all the outraged right-wing nut jobs. Bill Kristol gets it especially rough, considering he appears to have recently changed his opinion on due process. Download | Play Download | Play Doocy: So with the recent Supreme Court decision saying that detainees down at Gitmo can wind up with habeas corpus and get legal rights and stuff like that Stewart: Legal rights and stuff. It s actually all been explained in Thomas Paine s A Treatise on the Rights of Man and Sh*t It s crazy to stop and think about how far we ve come in just eight short years. It is now within mainstream right-wing discourse to condemn the Supreme Court for ruling that the President can t lock people up for life without a chance for them to prove their innocence. Is this even America anymore? Is there literally anything more un-American? Digg It!

The Daily Show: Lara Logan on the US media: ‘I’d just blow my brains out because it would drive me nuts.’
from Crooks and Liars June 18, 2008
Lara Logan is a big C s been in a war zone and not backed down from right wing narratives. She joins Jon Stewart and rocks the house down with this astute observation of the American media. Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather) Stewart: Do you watch the news that we re watching? Logan: No Stewart: in the United States? Do you see what we re hearing about the war? So, we might actually know everything? Logan: If I were to watch the news that you hear in the United States I d just blow my brains out because it would drive me nuts. Really? Are the Villagers watching? Do you hear?

Jon Stewart examines the media’s affinity for smearing Obama
from Crooks and Liars June 17, 2008
Jon Stewart takes an in-depth look at the phenomenon known as Baracknophobia, defined as the irrational fear of hope. Download | Play Download | Play The Irrational fear that behind the mild-mannered persona, Barack Obama is intent on enslaving the white race. It s true. Wake up, white people. Which attempt at smearing Obama is your favorite? Mine is a close tie between Sean Hannity calling Obama a radical liberal, and Steve Doocy claiming Obama plagiarized a speech from Mario Cuomo, despite only three words being the same.

The Daily Show: Let The Character Assassinations Begin!
from Crooks and Liars June 12, 2008
Download | Play Download | Play (h/t SilentPatriot) We have the presumptive nominees for the two parties. It s the general election season and that means it s time to start looking at the issue of character and how the various factions try to smear the other side. To the corporate media, John McCain is a lovably curmudgeonly Maverick. But we know from our buddy Cliff Schecter s book, The Real McCain (see above), that McCain has a bit of a temper on him, and not above dropping c-bombs on his sugar momma wife. Okay, seems a little harsh. But in his defense, McCain’s a Navy man. It’s just salty Navy talk. He’s not trying to hide it, you’ve seen his campaign slogan: John McCain—Experience You C**ts Can Count On. You know you can’t spell “count on” without c…Is this story true? Who knows, but the important thing is, it’s out there, signaling that we have officially moved into the character assassination portion of our presidential campaigns. That s right, it s not just limited to McSame. Stewart shows us Hillary feminists for McCain ( Wow! So McCain has the blind, spite vote locked up. Because of sexism, we’re going to go with the [beep] patriarch. ) and David Brooks inane attempt to paint Barack Obama as an elitist because he doesn t seem the type to go to the Applebee s salad bar.

Jon Stewart Slams Media for Blacking Out Iraq War Lies Report
from Crooks and Liars June 10, 2008
The Daily Show reports on the media s failure to report on the Senate report that proves the Bush administration knowingly lied to us about the reasons for war. Surely the Big Three have more important things to cover. Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather) Stewart: Let s go back to the Big Three, that s where real Americans get their news. Charlie Gibson, cover it! Gibson: Something that doesnt happen every day, and certainly doesn t happen twice..a well-know French daredevil named Spiderman Stewart: Yes, he was climbing the New York Times building. Perhaps looking to read the story about the administration leading us into a war that you didnt cover at all! At all! For a fake news anchor, Jon Stewart sure does a better job reporting actual news than the entire mainstream media combined. I m sure Stewart wouldn t take offense when I say that that s pretty sad.

Jon Stewart to Scott McClellan: “You talked about Fight Club”
from Crooks and Liars June 03, 2008
Last night on The Daily Show, Scott McClellan went two rounds with Jon Stewart to discuss his new book, What Happened, and, as always, was asked some of the toughest, most pointed questions of his entire media tour. In the second segment, Jon hammered the former press secretary on the book s theme of media complicity. Download | Play Download | Play The entire Presidency was a facade of public manipulation. Doesn t he say I know what s best for the country, and your job is to help me sell that to the American people without them realizing what we re really doing? Isn t that the gist of how Washington works now? You can catch the entire first part here.

Robert Novak attacks Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and a touch of John Stewart
from Crooks and Liars May 26, 2008
The Prince of darkness returns! Novakula dusts off his old weather beaten type writer to give us his idiotic tirade against the very popular Sebelius. Here s their response to Novak. Sebelius spokeswoman Nicole Corcoran condemned the Novak piece as forwarding his personal agendas and hyperbole. She pointed out that Novak s column failed to mention the 8.5 percent decline in the Kansas abortion rate since Sebeliushas been in office and added: Clearly, the people of Kansas don t share Mr. Novak s narrow view of Governor Sebelius, having overwhelmingly voted to re-elect her in 2006 in an endorsement of Governor Sebelius s centrist, mainstream approach. Wow, she supports women s rights. What a shocker. C Reilly just loved. His positions finally drove him out of a job in Kansas, but he s still hanging around. He was also being investigated for some money issues. Click here for the video. Anyway, back to Novak, here s a blast from the past Daily Show clip that has been a big favorite here. Jon Stewart Hammers Douglas Feith Over Pre-War Propaganda
from Crooks and Liars May 13, 2008
Douglas Feith is a fascinating character. Dubbed by General Tommy Franks as the stupidest f*cking guy on the planet, he is one of the neocons who still goes on TV like he did nothing wrong, when he should be hiding under a rock and having trouble sleeping at night. On Monday, Feith stammered and stuttered his way through the widely discredited laundry list of reasons why despite conventional wisdom and reality the administration s case for war was completely honest and forthright. Here is just a small taste of Feith s deceit and the money quote from Stewart: Download | Play Download | Play (click here for the full 22-minute, unedited interview) You removed the ability for the American public to make an informed decision. Once you have removed that, then you no longer have the authority. You told us what part of the argument is appropriate to know about. Although Stewart did a solid job of holding Feith s feet to the fire, I think he missed a couple of opportunities to really nail him. Rumsfeld s flunky maintains that everyone involved really did weigh the pros and con, and that they frankly conveyed both sides of the argument to the public. Well, I would love to hear his predictably laughable response to any one of these: The reinsertion of the infamous sixteen words into the SoTU. The Downing Street Memo that confirmed facts were being fixed around the policy to remove Saddam Hussein. Why was Powell s entire UN speech based on the claims of someone named Curveball an informant who the CIA repeatedly warned was entirely unreliable and a drunk. Why was the opinion of the State Department s Bureau of Intelligence and Research, who unequivocally concluded the aluminum tube and centrifuge angle was bogus, suppressed? Why weren t we told that Iraq s Foreign Minister, Naji Sabri, reached out to the CIA and debunked every myth about their non-existent weapons programs. And on and on and on Feel free to add your own examples in the comment section.

Jon Stewart Puts McCain on the Hot Seat
from Crooks and Liars May 08, 2008
Jon Stewart proved again last night that he is one of the best, if not the best, interviewer on television. Although the first part of the interview (not included here) was very cordial and weak, the second part heated up quickly. Stewart quizzed McCain on the Hagee endorsement, his seemingly detrimental connection to George Bush, his campaign s disgusting implication that Hamas endorses Obama, and a few other things. Download | Play Download | Play Stewart: Will you take the opportunity to repudiate and denounce President Bush? The media double-standard when it comes to McCain is sickening. Barack Obama had to jump through hoops in order to distance himself from Rev. Wright. Yet John McCain is allowed to stutter and stammer through his excuses for holding onto the endorsement. I m sure this is just a taste of things to come.

Daily Show: Billy Graham vs. Jeremiah Wright
from Crooks and Liars May 01, 2008
Continuing to be the most respectable name in (fake) news, The Daily Show put Wright s comments in context last night well, in the context of controversial things former pastors of all stripes and presidential allegiances have said over the years. from Crooks and Liars April 30, 2008

The Daily Show on McCain: The Sweet Talk Express
from Crooks and Liars April 25, 2008
Mr. Stewart takes a look at John McCain in a way that the media will not. Stewart: Hagee s God doesn t damn America. Hagee s God just destroys the parts of it he doesn t like. How are you going to distance yourself from that, Senator? McCain: I m glad to have his endorsement. Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather) Wow, a mention of John Hagee s insane positions and John McCain begging to have his support. “New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God,” Hagee said, because “there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came.” I wonder why the media will never cover that? I almost forgot, we re dealing with McCain s Media! And then there was Stephanopoulos. I forgot that McCain said he could a uncover billion dollars just about anywhere. Maybe on one of Keating s jets perhaps? George: Even by your own accounting 300 billion dollars a year, that means your previous promise to balance your budget in the first year that s gone. McCain: No, of course not. Look, I ll find you a hundred billion tomorrow.

The Daily Show: The Long, Flat, Seemingly Endless Bataan Death March To The White House
from Crooks and Liars April 24, 2008
Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather) Jon Stewart looks at the absurdity of the media coverage of the Pennsylvania primary and the punditocracy s need to use life and death analogies to heighten the drama as well as the ever-shifting goal posts employed by the Clinton campaign and their supporters to not count Hillary out of the race yet. So what it comes down to is that you would win the nomination if Democrats were Republicans? That sounds like one tremendous “if” you to the process.

The Daily Show on the Pentagon’s “Message Force Multipliers”
from Crooks and Liars April 23, 2008
Jon Stewart comes down hard on the Pentagon s manipulative propaganda racket revealed by The New York Times last week. Download | Play Download | Play The Iraq War! Remember? Remember when it started, and it was kind of big deal that some journalists were embedded with the troops? Well, this is great. As it turns out, it was more of an exchange program. Because they actually also had troops embedded with the journalists! Glenn Greenwald: As I noted on Sunday, the most striking part of the roughly-7000-word article was that several of the most guilty news outlets CBS, NBC and Fox just outright refused to answer the NYT s questions about their use of military analysts, what they knew about their analysts dealings with the Pentagon and the defense industry, and what procedures they use (then and now) to ensure that they don t broadcast government propaganda disguised as independent analysis. Identically, other news organizations not explicitly mentioned by the NYT article but which used some of the tainted sources (such as The Washington Post) have similarly failed to address their role in disseminating this Pentagon-controlled propaganda. Media organizations simply ignore collectively blackout any stories that expose major corruption in their news reporting, as evidenced by the fact that no major network or cable news programs have ever meaningfully examined the fundamental failures of the media in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. As Bill Moyers noted at the beginning of his truly superb documentary on the media-government collaboration concerning the invasion: The story of how the media bought what the White House was selling has not been told in depth on television. Thus, one of the most significant political stories of this generation what Moyers described as our press largely surrender[ing] its independence and skepticism to join with our Government in marching to war has simply been rendered invisible by our largest media outlets. That scandal just does not exist, particularly on television.

Senator Barack Obama on The Daily Show

Senator Obama dropped by The Daily Show last night (via satellite) to talk about the upcoming Pennsylvania primary and catch up with John on all the things that have happened since they last spoke. Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Bill W) JS: I’m going to cut through the spin for you, sir. This is what I’m here for. There’s a lot of insinuation amongst the pundits, etc., about these controversies. The Rev. Wright controversy, the flag pin controversy…by the way, I’m wearing mine, it’s just pinned directly to my chest. I can tell you what the real concern is and you can answer the question here, right here, right now and put it all to bed. BO: Right. JS: Sir, we are concerned that ultimately, at the end of the day, if you are fortunate enough to get the Democratic nomination, fortunate enough to become President of the United States, will you pull a ‘bait and switch’, sir, and enslave the white race? Is that your plan? And if it is your plan, be honest, tell us now. BO:That is not our plan, Jon. But I think your paranoia might make you suitable as a debate moderator.

Daily Show: President Bush’s Itty Bitty Torture Committee
from Crooks and Liars April 16, 2008
Jon Stewart takes the administration to task for, well, there s no delicate way to put this, deciding the intimate details of how we would torture people. It pains me to type those words. Download | Play Download | Play Digg It! You gotta wonder, how could these administration officials be so confident that we don’t torture? Well, there’s only two options, really. One, the administration reminded all military and intelligence agencies of the moral commitment that civilized nations have to remain humane, even in times of peril. Or…. They sat in a room and meticulously crafted an interrogation regimen in the lawyer-created space between cruelty and torture. Hmmm….I wonder which way they went.

Daily Show: Play the “George-Bush-Can-Predict-the-Future” Game
from Crooks and Liars April 15, 2008
Although we re never told exactly what success would look like in Iraq, the administration and its apologists are always quick to predict what the consequences of failure would be. While dissecting one of Bush s regular propaganda speeches Monday night, Jon Stewart realized that if you add the words what would happen if we invaded Iraq before every prediction the President now makes, it s like he can predict the future, or as Jon Stewart put it, see into the present. Download | Play Download | Play (link fixed) It s like he can see into the present. Maybe if we yell it loud enough, he ll hear it back in 2003. If only it were still 2003. Daily Show: The Rise and Fall of FOX News
from Crooks and Liars April 11, 2008
Eights months ago, I said that this was the best Daily Show clip I ve seen in a while. Well, Thursday night Jon Stewart and Jon Oliver out-did themselves. I present to you The Rise and Fall of FOX News. Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather for mash up) If there was ever a six minute video clip that could encapsulated what FOX has done to this country in the past 10+ years, this it it. Update: John Amato: Stewart: What Jon is the purpose of the documentary? Oliver: Simply to judge the president before history gets it s chance. FOX Host: From the beginning George W. Bush has been frequently ridiculed for his speaking style, now seven years later he s credited with some of the most eloquent and visionary speeches ever delivered by an American President. Stewart: Who has credited him with that? Oliver: That guy, just, just now, the guy on TV. You just saw him. You see, FOX News understands that a man s legacy is not defined not by what the man does, but by what people on television say he does about him. There is no truer statement, my friends. Then we get to see the treatment of Obama, Clinton and McCain through their warped eyes. Oliver: In the years to come this fearless network will continue to say to America with confidence and absolute certainty. Go FOX yourself.

The Daily Show: Don’t Talk About Flight Club
from Crooks and Liars April 09, 2008
Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather) Jon Stewart s response to them. It’s all sort of ironic, when you think about it. When you fly, you are inspected quite thoroughly. Whereas the plane itself is perhaps occasionally vacuumed. See, with this administration, if a passenger blows up a plane, it’s a failure on the War on Terror. But if a plane just blows up on its own, eh, that’s the market self-regulating.
