Tim Berners-Lee to Hollywood: Move from "Channels" to Random Access

Tim Berners-Lee to Hollywood: Move from "Channels" to Random Access

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, says that as video on the Web continues to grow, the movie industry needs evolve from a "channels" scenario to a "random access" platform, where films can be universally searched, watched and paid for. In accomplishing this, producers need to provide much greater metadata around their content. The transformation of video onto a data-rich "semantic Web" is a key objective of the World Web Consortium, the Boston-based group Sir Tim heads.Joost Was a Trailbaizer in the Semantic WebTwo years ago, we interviewed the W3C's Chief Architect Philippe Le Garet on the implementation of the semantic Web with data and video. Philippe addresses the pioneeering work of Joost in creating rich metadata around its content. Unfortunately Joost is closing shop, according to a report on TechCrunch.I interviewed Sir last week in Washington at the Embassy of Finland at a technology symposium presented by Finland's Technology Academy Foundation. Here is a 37-minute video of Sir Tim on stage at the event with New York Times reporter Steve Lohr. My first interview with Sir Tim was about the open data initiative and the U.S. and British governments.Andy Plesser, Executive Producer www.beet.tv

Andrea LaPaugh: Foundations and Future of Information Search - March 4, 2009

Andrea LaPaugh: Foundations and Future of Information Search - March 4, 2009

from Princeton University Podcasts on March 13, 2009
Duration: 4168
Lunch 'n Learn presentation: Everyone googles - in the U.S, about 12 billion times a month (including search engines that aren’t Google). We are mostly pleased with the results we get. How can it be that we give an automated system a couple of words and it finds reasonably relevant documents among one hundred billion or so possibilities? Will our satisfaction with these tools increase or decrease as the Web and our expectations grow? Dr. LaPaugh gives a peek “under the hood” and discuss core techniques used by search engines. These techniques range from word occurrence analysis for text documents, originating in the 1960s, to Web linking analysis, pioneered by Google’s 1998 PageRank document ranking method. Dr. LaPaugh also discusses the challenges of non-text media such as music and images and new techniques, including exploiting user behavior. Bio: Andrea LaPaugh is a Professor of Computer Science. Her research is in the development and evaluation of methods for searching and analyzing information. She is currently teaching COS 435: Information Retrieval, Discovery, and Delivery. http://www.berberus.com (English and French Description) Eng: Berberus is not just another aggregator: It can also be used to monitor, in real time, users' activities such as posts and comments they made. The data can be filtered and grouped by region, blog names, authors and tags, etc. No Maghrebian regional aggregator reaches as many Maghrebian Blogs as Berberus. We've developed an advanced search technology that is not offered by any other search engine. Berberus is not an ethnic aggregator nor "berberist". It is completely neutral and it is not calling for a regional militancy. Any blogger can submit his or her blog in order for it to get indexed as long as he relates to one of the 5 Maghrebian states. FR: L Objectif de Berberus est non seulement d agr ger les blogs, mais galement d offrir la possibilit de suivre quasi en temps r el l activit des intervenants tant au niveau des billets publi s que des commentaires post s.
