The 404 Podcast 479: Where we pick our poison

The 404 Podcast 479: Where we pick our poison

from The 404 (MP3) on December 03, 2009
Duration: 0
Wait, this is what WoW looks like? Maybe I should start playing... (Credit: PrintWarcraft.com) It feels good to let the poison out every once in awhile, so today's episode of CNET's The 404 Podcast is all about human vices, starting with a story about a controversial secret love scene in Dragon Age: Origins between two gay elves. While conservatives are up in arms about the cut scene, Wilson and Jeff stand by the Mature rating and hold parents responsible for making the final buying decision, but I have to play devil's advocate and ask why it's necessary to have sex scenes in video games in the first place; are there really gamers out there actually getting a kick out of seeing it, or is it just creating more trouble than it's worth? While we're on the subject of nerds, World of Warcraft players are rejoicing at Blizzard's "ever-expanding line of merchandise" that now includes customized posters featuring your in-game WoW character. It's called Print Warcraft, and it's already so popular that the Web site is apologizing for its overloaded servers. We have a few problems with the idea of the service, so be sure to listen to the whole episode for our breakdown. The last vice of the day might change the way you party on the weekends: a researcher in Russia has found a way to solidify your favorite liquors into pill form. Evgeny Moskalev of the Saint Petersburg Technological University has figured out how to turn alcohol into powder and pack the concentration into a "dry pill." We seriously doubt party animals in Russia will be able to measure out the exact vodka dosage needed to get blotto, but we'll raise our pill box to it anyway. (Credit: Otterbox) We've also got two new user submitted theme songs thanks to PA Stubbs and David, and DON'T FORGET! It's not to late to enter for a chance to win one of ten Otterbox cases for your iPhone 3G or 3GS. All you have to do is leave a comment on yesterday's episode and wait to see if you win! The contest runs until noon tomorrow, December 4, so don't forget! Buzz Out Loud Podcast 1118: The mean streets of Dell

Turns out Dell says it never deleted complaints from its forums about throttled processors, and it is working hard to fix the issues with updated BIOS. Donald suggests that the folks who claimed they were deleted by Dell probably lost a lot of street cred. We also speculate on the meaning of the Comcast acquisition of NBC Universal. Seems verizon s actually showing a bigger map than AT t own, just pay to use as and when they need it. So what, you might well ask; phone still works there funny, but not that big a deal. Well it appears (See same article) AT mostly coverage, unless you re in specific, unmentioned areas where the coverage is limited. Makes me feel happy to be in the UK where the iPhone is available via O2, Orange and soon (6 months I think) Vodafone will also offer it. Who hot elves? (it s an anagram ) - Hennell ********** Hey Buzz crew I was reading about Talkback the open source text-to-speech screen reader designed for the droid. As I m sure you re aware the iPhone 3G S has voiceover capabilities hence making it mostly accessible to visually impaired/blind users but I can t find a damn thing on Talkback! With all the talk of Droid becoming a stronghold (?) in the smart phone market and Jason s undying love of his own bot I wondered if anyone had gotten better news than this link on its accessibility features. Also as a side note I had to respond to the Kindle talk recently regarding it taking over the world and being accessible by design. Note that even though it may provide some text-to-speech capabilities most books (and publishers) have disabled this feature out of fear of audiobooks loosing sales *and* the menus and toolbars do not have speech output making them inaccessible to navigate for those with print/visual disabilities. Love you though, love the show! JB ********** Hey Buzz crew, I was listening to episode #1117 and your discussion about non-standard printer drivers and I think the reason why they are universally terrible is that HP, Canon etc. want to be able to sell you more ink cartridges. Normally when the proprietary software says the ink has run out, there is still actually plenty of ink left. They just want to be able to continue to sell as many ink cartridges as possible. I think this is why Microsoft never was able to get them to adopt a universal standard and Google is going to have a very difficult time trying to do the same. Love the show, Pete in San Jose

404 Hoverboard! (Credit: CNET/The 404) There's so much to do on today's episode of The 404 Podcast that I'm surprised we were able to fit it all into half an hour--we've got 404 listener Leopold's take on our theme song, Back to the Future/The 404 mash up fan art, and a prize giveaway courtesy of Otterbox! Before we get into all of that, we have to make fun of the new Karate Kid movie coming out next year starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. Slashfilm just released four official photos from the next film in the franchise, and already we're seeing glaringly obvious cultural mix-ups. For instance, one of the training scenes features the young Karate Kid practicing on the Great Wall of China. Karate = Japanese, Great Wall = Chinese. Come on! And speaking of mistakes, the third installment of "Jackass: The Movie" will premiere in 3-D. Don't get us wrong- The 404 is no stranger to the Jackass movies, but a 3-D view of Chris Pontius' Speedo we do not need! 404 Hoverboard - Powered by The Future A big thanks goes out to 404 listener and music student Leopold, who sent in an amazing new theme song for The 404--we'll definitely put it into the song rotation, great work, Leopold! Jim, another talented 404 listener, also deserves our appreciation for the Back To The Future hoverboard mash-up you see up there! Judging by the DeLorean in the background, Jim is obviously a big BTTF fan and so are we, so check out the slideshow for more pictures of The 404 hoverboard, and don't worry--it's got POWER. Otterbox Defender case for iPhone 3G/S (Credit: Otterbox) Finally, the good folks at OtterBox hooked it up with 10 of their Defender and Commuter cases, so if you have an iPhone and need a case, leave a comment on this blog and tell us why you deserve to win! HTC made the last google developer phone and in doing so got access to the source code for 1.0 very early. This almost forced a partnership on the G1. Simmilarly google is essentially forced to work with a particular manufacture every launch in ever generation ( i.e. Droid 2.0). I would argue that in an attempt to not be evil that the phone they launch is a developer version that will allow them to more tightly control a symultainous launch. Thier current version is a bit dated. Making thier own consumer phone bypassing both hardware partners AND wireless carriers is risky and potentially evil. Specifically given that they have advertised this project as an open project. Wallace R. Fanning
