The Cornerstone #16: The Absolute Predestination of ChristThe Cornerstone #16: The Absolute Predestination of Christ

July 15, 2008

Author: AirMaria Added: Tue, 15 Jul 2008 19:39:31 -0800 Duration: 389Ave Maria! Fr. Maximilian shows how Scotus, in contrast with the opinion of St. Thomas Aquinas, held that the predestination of Christ was absolute, sin or no sin. To say, with Aquinas, that the primary motive of the Incarnation was redemption from sin is to say that the Word-made-flesh was occasioned by sin; this makes the primacy of Christ relative to sin--No sin, no Incarnation--this is the Thomistic school. To the contrary, Bl. John writes: If the fall were the reason for Christ's predestination it would follow that the greatest work of God [the Incarnation] was occasioned. For him this was absurd. Rather, Bl. John finds the primary motive of the Incarnation in something prior to foreseen sin and holds that sin or no sin, the Word would have become flesh.Links: Outline of the doctrine of the absolute predestination of Christ at Irish-Catholic and Dangerous BlogThis video series is based on the book A Primer on the Absolute Primacy of Christ by the host Fr. Author: AirMaria Added: Sat, 12 Jul 2008 08:34:57 -0800 Duration: 368Ave Maria! At the Monastery of Bethlehem, of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of St. Bruno in Livingston Manor, NY one sees the Byzantine and Eastern traditions reflected in the architecture of their Monastery Chapel and the hermitage chapels. Apart from any consideration of sin, the structure of God's plan is union with the Most Holy Trinity through the mediation of Jesus and Mary. Thus the Incarnation elevates man to be a partaker of the divine nature--what the Greek Fathers call theosis, divinization, or deification. If man had not sinned, there would still be the mediation of Jesus and Mary; there would still be adoption as children in Christ Jesus and divinization; but there would have been no need for the Cross, for Redemption. Sin or no sin, the Divine Architect has the same design--Come to Me through Jesus Christ and His Immaculate Mother! This video series is based on the book A Primer on the Absolute Primacy of Christ by the host Fr. John Duns Scotus (1265-1308) was a Franciscan priest, theologian and professor at Oxford University and the University of Paris. He was famous for his subtle doctrine, especially regarding the Immaculate Conception, and has come to be known as the Subtle Doctor. Because of his doctrine of the Absolute Primacy of Christ, sin or no sin, the thesis that holds that the Word would have become flesh even had Adam not sinned has come to be known as the Scotistic or Franciscan Thesis. Bl. Scotus bases his doctrine on predestination as found in Sacred Scripture and Tradition, and upon simple logic: God wills the created universe in an orderly fashion. PlusHigh Court Rules on Exxon Valdez and Child RapeHigh Court Rules on Exxon Valdez and Child RapeThe Associated PressThe U.S. Supreme Court slashes a multi-billion dollar penalty in the Exxon Valdez disaster and says people who rape children cannot be executed. (June 25)Two major decisions came down from the Supreme Court Wednesday .. The court ruled to dramatically cut the damages awarded in the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster -- from 2-point-5 billion to 500-million. The initial number had been set by a federal appeals court -- which had cut a previous ruling in half. The ruling was 5 to 3. Justice Samuel Alito took no part in the case because he owns Exxon stock. Nearly 33-thousand Alaskans are in line to share in the award, which would be about 15-thousand dollars a person. The case involves a tanker accident which dumped 11 million gallons of crude into Prince William Sound. The Court also struck down a law that allows the execution of people convicted of a raping a child --- deciding that such cases violates the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment. The case involved the rape of a man's 8-year-old stepdaughter. Justice Anthony Kennedy and his four liberal colleagues wrote that the death penalty is not a "proportional punishment'' for the rape of a child. The four more conservative justices dissented. Forty-five states ban the death penalty for any kind of rape, and the other five states allow it for child rapists. ___ ___, The Associated Press. The court ruled 5-4 that the government is violating the constitutional rights of prisoners. (June 12)A divided Supreme Court says foreign terror suspects held at Guantanamo Bay have the right to challenge their detention in civilian courts. It's the third high court ruling on the subject. The previous two times, the administration and the Republican-controlled Congress changed the law to block detainees from court.Writing for the five-four majority, Justice Anthony Kennedy said: "THE LAWS AND CONSTITUTION ARE DESIGNED TO SURVIVE, AND REMAIN IN FORCE, IN EXTRAORDINARY TIMES."(SOT: MICHAEL RATNER/CENTER FOR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS)(13:06:35) I HAD TEARS IN MY EYES. I JUST THINK IT'S THE MOST CRITICAL DECISION WE'VE WON IN YEARS AND HOPEFULLY BEGINS TO END REALLY THE EXCESSES OF THE SO CALLED WAR ON TERROR OF THIS ADMINISTRATION. The Center for Constitutional Rights represents many of the 270 men still held at the U-S Naval base in Cuba. Among the prisoners are men considered high-value targets. They including Khalid Sheik Mohammad, who the government says was the mastermind of the September 11th attacks. (SOT: MICHAEL RATNER)(13:07:38) I THINK THE HIGH MAJORITY OF PEOPLE AT GUANTANAMO WILL BE FREED BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT JUST DOES NOT HAVE THE EVIDENCE TO HOLD THEM. In Rome, President Bush said he will look into whether new legislation is appropriate.(SOT: PRESIDENT BUSH)(13:50:12) AS TO THE SUPREME COURT'S DECISION. WE'LL ABIDE BY THE SUPREME COURT'S DECISION. THAT DOESN'T MEAN I HAVE TO AGREE WITH IT. THIS IS A DEEPLY DIVIDED COURT AND I STRONGLY AGREE WITH THOSE WHO DISSENTED. The courts most conservative members dissented. Antonin Scalia wrote that the U-S is 'at war with radical Islamists" and that the court's decision "will make the war harder on us. It will almost certainly cause more Americans to be killed."It's not clear whether the ruling will lead to prompt hearings for the detainees. It might seem like an impossible battle, but it is actually possible for people outside the United States who suffer from the activities of an American company, organization, or government, to take their fight to a US court room. And that is just what a group of Villagers from Indonesia have been trying to do for the last few years. This podcast is to explain the case of the Villagers from Aceh versus Exxon-Mobile, one of the world s most powerful oil companies which stands accused of sponsoring torture, rape, and kidnapping in Aceh. How could such crimes have happened? How is it that a group of people in another country can actually seek justice in a US court?
