Paul Thomas Anderson Directs Play With 'SNL' Members
from Cinematical July 21, 2008
Filed under: Casting, New Releases, RumorMonger, Celebrities and Controversy First, he gets a mainstream comic actor to act in a contemplative art house narrative with Punch-Drunk Love. Now, he's putting two of them on a stage. According to cigarettes and red vines, Paul Thomas Anderson has written and directed a play in Los Angeles with Saturday Night Live stars Maya Rudolph (Anderson's partner) and Fred Armisen. It premieres at the Largo on August 5, but specific details about plot remain unrevealed. Still, the prospects of seeing Anderson's eerily detached style in a live performance are intriguing, to say the least. As Slashfilm points out, the production has a few logical attachments to the filmmaker's past: Anderson directed a short film for SNL back in 2000, and Rudolph starred in Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion, which Anderson may or may not have ghost-directed in parts. Now that Anderson has proven he can craft epic period pieces of the raunchy (Boogie Nights) and morose (There Will Be Blood) kind, he's reached a point where audiences will basically allow him to take them wherever he wants to go. The dynamics of the stage, however, differ greatly from those of the cinema. Since the name and subject matter are a mystery, there's a lot left to the imagination. Will Anderson allow Rudolph and Armisen to unleash their comic potential? Or is that a milkshake I hear brewing? Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tom Farley, Jr., THE CHRIS FARLEY SHOW co-author: Mr. Media Audio Interview
from Mr. Media May 22, 2008
Losing a family member at the tender age of 33 is incredibly tough. It’s even more complicated when that young person lived his existence in a bigger-than-life way, like Chris Farley – and his trials and tribulations are witnessed by millions. In his new book, The Chris Farley Show, Chris’s older brother, Tom Farley, Jr. – with help from co-author Tanner Colby - pieces together his late brother’s life in the form of an oral history with interviews from most everyone who encountered Chris. This includes family and friends from his youth, on through the “Saturday Night Live” family, and people from his hit movies, including Tommy Boy, Black Sheep, and Beverly Hills Ninja. The book is an easy, breezy read, and was excerpted last month in Playboy. You can LISTEN to this interview by clicking the BlogTalkRadio.com audio player below! Niko and Vlad on Saturday Night Live [Grand Theft Auto IV]
from Kotaku May 11, 2008
GTA on SNL? Well, if a movie did a $500 million opening week, bet your ass there'd be a skit on it the very next show. Here Niko Bellic and Vlad Glebov appear on Saturday Night Live's "Weekend Update" to complain about the negative image the game gives to Liberty City. Most of the gag appears to be the permanent karate-chop pose of motion-capped hands, overly expressive gesturing and out-of-place dialogue during non-cutscene encounters. The writers leave it up to the viewer to get it. So if that's mainstream enough to get laughs, holy hell, games have really come a long way. [Thanks to Gawker's Richard Blakeley for the video.] Update: Commenter Rotmm added this 360/PS3 comparison shot of SNL. I wonder if Gametrailers might be working on a video too.

Countdown - SNL effect
from Where's the Outrage? March 11, 2008
I was talking with my car dealer today. (Yes, I m up there so often that they know me by name.) Anyway, we were talking about politics. He said that someone on the Sunday talk shows was going on and on about the Saturday Night Live effect. One of the main reasons that Hillary Clinton won Texas and Ohio was Saturday Night Live. He said that the pundit was 100% wrong. No one really watches Saturday Night Live any more. He is right. At least I think that he is. I know that I haven t watched Saturday Night Live seriously since Eddie Murphy left. I know that back then, folks would plan a date around SNL. Why don t we eat dinner then come back to my house and watch SNL then go see a late movie. SNL was blamed for painting Gerald Ford in a bad light since every time the actor that played President Ford was seen on stage he was tripping over something. I know that Saturday Night Live isn t generating that kind of interest, now. So, to conclude that people made up their minds on voting for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama based on a SNL appearance is kinda crazy. I guess it isn t any crazier than Hillary floating the idea that Obama could be her running mate with her at the top of the ticket. I guess to quiet the media SNL did their own version of the 3 am commercial. Keith Olbermann and Eugene Robinson from the Washington Post discuss Hillary Clinton and Saturday Night Live. It is a good interview. barack obama, countdown, Election 2008, eugene robinson, gerald ford, hillary clinton, keith olbermann, president ford, running mate, saturday night live, snl appearance

If You've Visited Canada, You Can't Vote [Hillary Clinton]
from Gawker March 02, 2008
Hillary Clinton's campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination has perfected the geographic excuse. South Carolina wasn't representative because the primary electorate was so black; defeat in Delaware didn't count because the state was so small; Maine held a caucus, dominated by Obama-loving activists, and it snowed. Clinton headquarters used the same playbook when dismissing the endorsement of Barack Obama by Arcade Fire, the indie band. They're Canadian, the Clintonites claimed, so their support doesn't count. Except the band members, as noted by Adam Nagourney of the New York Times, actually grew up in Texas, the biggest state up for grabs in the Democratic race this coming Tuesday. Despite the rush of actors and musicians to Obama's camp, Hillary does retain some cultural cred. Last night's appearance by the Senator on Saturday Night Live , though it lacked the impact of her husband's saxophone show on Arsenio in 1992, wasn't entirely embarrassing. Click for the clip.

KERA Commentary: Erykah Badu: Honey and Vinyl
from North Texas News and Commentary February 29, 2008
Traffic planners say if voters reject the Trinity Toll Road, the most likely alternative is a highway along Industrial and Irving Boulevards. Such a speedway, paralleling the Trinity river on Dallas's downtown side - just outside the levee - could cost hundreds of millions of additional dollars. But there would be other benefits. KERA's Bill Zeeble reports.

HILLARY CLINTON BARACK OBAMA SNL OHIO DEBATE
from Binside TV February 27, 2008
Saturday Night Live kicked off over the weekend with a hilarious spoof of Senator Barack Obama debating Senator Hillary Clinton. Look for a cameo from Obama Girl in the SNL sketch that parodies the press fascination with Barack Obama. Many were puzzled when Senator Clinton referenced the SNL skit during their Ohio debate. This comes after her campaign was accused by the Obama camp of a smear campaign on Drudge Report after leaked photos appeared of Barack Obama wearing a traditional costume . Here's the Huffington Post's review of the incident. Click here for their complete review of the MSNBC debate. Clinton Faces More Booing After Referencing SNL Skit: Sen. Hillary Clinton, lamenting the soft coverage with which she believes Sen. Obama has been treated, tried out a new line of attack during the debate on Tuesday night. It fell more than a bit flat and was met with some mild boos. Speaking after a 16-minute exchange on health care between the two Democratic presidential candidate, Clinton rhetorically asked why she always is given the first question in these forums. Then, playing off of a Saturday Night Live sketch that parodied the press' infatuation with Obama, she offered this bit: Well, could I just point out that in the last several debates, I seem to get the first question all the time? And I don't mind. You know, I'll be happy to field them but I do find it curious. And if anybody saw Saturday Night Live, maybe we should ask Barack if he's comfortable and needs another pillow. Watch the MSNBC rundown of the Ohio debate.

Only Black Guys Can Be Obama On SNL [Race-baiting]
from Gawker February 27, 2008
Television critics are defending Barack Obama's vision of a less racist America by saying only a black comedian is allowed to make fun of the presidential candidate. Fred Armisen tried to imitate Obama on Saturday Night Live but it was not funny, thanks to Armisen's Japanese and Venezuelan ancestors, and now critics of all races are uniting to make Armisen aware of how his genes make his dreams impossible. Apparent white lady Maureen Ryan led the charge from the Chicago Tribune, writing, " there's only one thing that would justify giving the role to a non-black performer -- if the person who took on the role was simply terrific as Obama." Then black woman Hannah Pool wrote in Britain's Guardian that "the Chicago Tribune should not hire a white TV critic to do a black TV critic's job." Kidding! She actually wrote, "Casting a black actor... would have made the whole thing a lot less shoddy." Actually, what made Armisen's performance weak was not the color of the skin but the (awkward) content of his (Obama) character, on display in this excerpt: [via TVTattle]
