A Far Cry Live at the de Young Museum
from BayTaper.com June 15, 2008
After a much-needed three-week vacation in Europe (more on that later), BayTaper.com is back in action (albeit a bit jet-lagged). Just before June and I left on our trip, we had the pleasure of hosting several members of the phenomenal unconducted chamber orchestra A Far Cry during the first date of their inaugural west coast tour. Our good friend Megumi Stohs, who is a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, is our connection to the group. Many years ago, Megumi worked for June on occasion while attending the Conservatory, and we ve kept in touch during the time that followed her graduation. The group is based out of Boston, and is starting to turn heads in classical music circles on the East Coast, so I couldn t help but take advantage of this opportunity by offering to photograph and record their performance in the Koret Auditorium at the de Young Museum on May 15, 2008. The show was simply amazing, and the recording came out stellar. Best of all, they ve granted permission to share the first piece played that night, Arcangelo Corelli s Concerto Grosso in F major, Op.6 No.9 (1708), which you can listen to by clicking the Play Now link below. On this tour, the group featured Sharon Cohen, Andrew Eng, Jesse Irons, Jae Young Lee, Shaw Pong Liu, Monica Pegis, Megumi Stohs, Ashley Vandiver, and Liza Zurlinden on violin; Margaret Dyer, Jason Fisher, and Franklin Shaw on viola; Loewi Lin, Jeremiah Shaw, and Courtenay Vandiver on cello; and Karl Doty on Bass. You can learn more about the group at AFarCry.org, and you can keep abreast of their ongoing projects and performances by checking their blog, which is updated regularly.

BWTV35: Empty November
from burntwire.tv June 04, 2008
On Wednesday November 8th, a cargo ship hit the Bay Bridge and spilled 58,000 gallons of oil into the bay. After the recent oil spill, I went to Ocean Beach on the following Tuesday to see the aftermath. The beach looked pretty clean and it was a warm, sunny day, despite the ecological tragedy. It sounds like a lot of the damage could have been averted if they had acted to clean up the spill sooner. Empty green waves like these should serve to remind us how great a gift we are given to live next to the ocean, and that we all need to do our part to protect it. Shot in 1080i HDV. Camera/Editing: Colin Murray.

Vermicomposting Results: Barb Finnin Measures Us Up
from Videoblogging - recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 03, 2008
We ve been composting in our homemade worm bin for 5 months now. Through trials and tribulations, we ve learned a lot about the right environment for worms! In fact we experimented so much, that we managed to decimate our entire worm population. *Sigh*. Master composter and Freshtopia diva, Barb Finnin, came by to see how our worm bin was doing after all this time. Thank goodness she was so encouraging! She helped us haul our semi-composted compost (and dead worm population) to our new backyard composting bins where it can still be useful. We also get a look at a Wriggly Wranch-a multi-layered worm bin that our neighbors purchased at a discount from our county waste management. Seems that if you can get the discount, the layered method is the way to go. We will try again using homemade methods, but this time we ll have a little bit more knowledge to keep our worms alive. Thanks Barb!

Treasure Island: San Francisco’s Sustainable Land of Tomorrow
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 01, 2008
San Francisco s Department of the Environment is leading the initiative to fully redesign Treasure Island- a 400 acre human made island in the San Francisco bay. Originally built for The World s Fair in 1939, it s been used as a movie studio, a naval base and now for residential housing. By 2020, the city plans to have this little plot of land revamped and functioning as green as possible. Jennifer Kass, from the Dept of the Environment, explains the city s process of planning holistically with all aspects of urban living in mind. Treasure Island could possibly inspire future models of sustainability because of its unique geographic challenges. From transportation to green open spaces to building and construction to where you get your groceries- if it can happen self sufficiently on a 400 acre island, maybe it can happen anywhere.

Vermicomposting: Changing The World 1000 Worms At A Time
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 01, 2008
Can you tell that we re into our worm bin? As you saw in our last worm bin update, our bin had been getting a little sludgy and unproductive. Jay went online and found a source to buy red wigglers for cheap so we could bump up the composting production of our bin. Keeping an eye (and nose) on your bin will help you get a feel for how things are going in your worms world.

Jon Phillips: Creative Commons Guru
from YouTube :: Tag // pixelodeon May 29, 2008
We're constantly thinking about sustainability- in the environment we live as well as in the way we work and produce media. Creative Commons is a non-profit organization trying to change the way people use copyright and licensing for media and intellectual property. Instead of the traditional "all rights reserved" model for distributing works, Creative Commons continues to educate creators about the advantages that come with the "some rights reserved" model. Jon Phillips is an artist, educator, open source developer and Creative Commons evangelist who loves to school companies and the general public on the freedom that can be created by a true participatory culture. A culture of sharing and respectful negotiation between maker and taker. Author: RyanIsHungry Keywords: creativecommons jonphillips sanfrancisco pixelodeon ryanishungry cc Added: May 29, 2008

Vermicomposting: Jay Gives A Worm Bin Update
from Videoblogging - recent posts - blip.tv (beta) May 29, 2008
We ve been Vermicomposting for almost 4 months now and it s been quite a learning experience! We recently moved to a place where we could place our bin outside, so we got a little lazy about smell. Pretty soon, the smell was really bad! Too much liquid, not enough drainage and air was causing anaerobic (sans oxygen) bacteria to grow which causes that rotting smell. Jay has been patient enough to help the bin drain by rotating in paper, dirt and sawdust. Drilling several dozen extra drain holes helped a bunch too! We ve also been checking out the book Worms Eat My Garbage for more Vermicomposting tips!

Green Ambassadors: Laguna High School Students Research Biofuels
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) May 29, 2008
Lindsay Hassett aka Betty Biodiesel leads a group of Laguna High School students in the Green Ambassadors program on a tour of Dave Erikson s home brew biodiesel lab. The Green Ambassadors program was created to get students learning science, civics and environmental stewardship through experience and action. Today s lesson provided the group with basic information about biodiesel that they could present to their school board. This field trip is just one step in the process to further their mission of converting dirty diesel school busses into cleaner burning bio-machines.

Maker Faire - Swarm
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) May 16, 2008
From the Maker Faire Program (http://makerfaire.com/pub/e/1091) About the Maker(s): Marnia Johnston SWARM is built to explore the aesthetic possibilities in the emergent behavior of artificial systems. As a first step, Orbs are remote-controlled by human operators, but each Orb's sounds and color illumination is algorithmically generated in response to location and motion. Each Orb has sophisticated navigational sensors including GPS, accelerometers, and rate gyros. We are progressing towards sophisticated navigational algorithms, much like those used in spacecraft, that allow each orb to determine its location with high accuracy. From this, we can explore emergent and cooperative behavior like flocking as well as new possibilities in machine choreography. SWARM is not a simulation. SWARM is a platform for art of the 21st century. http://wiki.orbswarm.com/index.php?title=Main_Page
