A Gay Man Speaks Out on HIV and Sex Today

A Gay Man Speaks Out on HIV and Sex Today

from abbiemaybe on April 07, 2008
Duration: 1010
Cass Mann is one of the world's longest-term HIV-positive diagnosed gay men, now in his third decade of living with HIV, and the founder of UK s only gay men s HIV/AIDS charity Positively Healthy, which provides HIV services including education, support, and peer counselling. Here he talks about the realities of HIV in the gay community today. Any gay man becoming HIV positive in the United Kingdom today has at some level made a decision that it was OK to contract HIV, because we know how to prevent transmission of HIV and if a man applies that knowledge, it's extremely unlikely he'll contract HIV. Unprotected sex is taking a risk each time of needlessly contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Drug use increases the risk that people will have unprotected sex while under the influence. Protect yourself and your partner every time you have sex regardless of your HIV status! Is it an Open Relationship or an Open Grave?

Is it an Open Relationship or an Open Grave?

Cass Mann is one of the world's longest-term HIV-positive diagnosed gay men, now in his third decade of living with HIV, and the founder of UK s only gay men s HIV/AIDS charity Positively Healthy, which provides HIV services including education, support, and peer counselling. Here he talks about the dangers of playing away. If you're in a relationship with someone and you don't know what they're doing when you're apart, or you suspect they're having sex with other partners, or they have admitted it, end the relationship. If your partner loves you, they won't be playing away. Cut your losses. It's not worth it. What they bring home could kill you. Today, HIV is often transmitted within relationships. We think that the answer to all our needs is more sex and/or better sex. That's not how it works. First, get your relationship with yourself right. If you do that, you can deal with your partner. Disclosing HIV Status: Risk Rejection, or Prosecution?

Disclosing HIV Status: Risk Rejection, or Prosecution?

Cass Mann is one of the world's longest-term HIV-positive diagnosed gay men, now in his third decade of living with HIV, and the founder of UK s only gay men s HIV/AIDS charity Positively Healthy, which provides HIV services including education, support, and peer counselling. Here he talks about disclosure of HIV status before having sex. If you are HIV positive and want to have sex, you must disclose your HIV status. Do you tell them and risk rejection, or not tell and have your way with them? If an HIV positive person doesn't disclose and doesn't use protection (including for oral sex!), the HIV positive person can be criminally prosecuted in the United Kingdom. It's possible to use DNA sequencing to prove that you contacted HIV from a specific partner. If you're HIV positive, it is your responsibility to disclose and to use a condom every time. If the prospective partner says no, accept it. For more information, visit http://www.posh-uk.org.uk/ and http://www.AIDSvideos.org/.

Some Ways You Can Contract HIV and the Risk of Each One

Some Ways You Can Contract HIV and the Risk of Each One

from abbiemaybe on April 02, 2008

People often ask us which sexual practices have a relatively higher risk of HIV transmission and which have a relatively lower risk. This video discusses the estimated risk of HIV transmission for mother-to-child transmission, needle sharing, and for some common sexual practices including anal sex, vaginal sex, and oral sex on men and women. These statistics are just estimates based on the currently available scientific information. The risk of contracting HIV from a partner will also vary at different times during their infection. A person who has contracted HIV is most infectious shortly after they have acquired the virus, known as primary HIV infection. The cited figures here are estimated average risks, and risk of transmitting HIV can be increased or decreased by many other factors. For example, for sexual contact, if either or both partners have other sexually transmitted diseases, the risk of HIV transmission will be increased. Remember, the averages won t help you if you re the one who becomes infected. For example, unprotected insertive oral sex on a man may carry an estimated risk of 1 chance of HIV transmission in 20,000, but if you re the one who gets infected, HIV transmission is still 100% for you. These statistics are not a license to engage in unprotected sex. Rather, they will hopefully help people to realize that all of the sexual practices we ve listed carry some risk of HIV transmission, so it s vital if you re sexually active to always practice safer sex techniques such as the use of condoms.
