ERICKSON AIR-CRANE: Fighting Fire From Above
from hi, i'm rawn on April 16, 2009
Duration: 573
Duration: 573
A Unique View On A Unique Job.... Talk about a job that DOES ivolve some heavy lifting -- ask Kenny Chapman about what he does to fight the scourge of fire via one of the most incredible flying machines ever built... the Sikorski/Erickson Air-Crane. Talk about a purpose-built aircraft. The Erickson Aircrane is the epitome of a machine built for one thing, and one thing only -- to HAUL nearly anything that can fit under its massive frame. Yet for a helicopter with such a singular purpose, the Aircrane is an incredibly versatile vehicle... performing fire suppression, civil protection, construction, and timber harvesting missions, among other tasks no other aircraft could perform in quite the same way. Originally conceived as a civilian version of the Sikorsky CH-54A "Tarhe," the S-64A Skycrane was the first helicopter built as a flying crane with an aft-facing pilot station, that gives the pilot an unobstructed view of the load being carried. Perhaps most impressively, that station also has full positive control of the aircraft during precision operations -- meaning the pilot can manipulate the aerial platform as needed, much as a ground crane operator controls the boom. In military service, the twin-engined CH-54 "Tarhe" performed with an outstanding service -- supporting the Army's First Cavalry Division, Airmobile in Vietnam by retrieving over 380 damaged aircraft, saving an estimated $210 million. In 1971, Erickson Lumber Company leased an S-64E Skycrane helicopter from Sikorsky Aircraft and renamed the company Erickson Air-Crane. This occurred two years after the FAA announced a Standard Transport Category certification of the aircraft for loads up to 20,000 pounds -- an STC Erickson later purchased outright, along with tooling and the aircraft's type certificate. By 1993, Erickson Air-Crane became the manufacturer and support facility for all S-64 parts and components... and also produced the first FAA-certified S-64F model on January 12 of that year. In 2007, the FAA presented Erickson Air-Crane with the full Production Certificate, which allows the company to manufacture newly built Erickson S-64s under the Erickson-owned H6EA TC. Today, Erickson Air-Crane owns and operates a fleet of 18 Aircranes throughout the world... and has plans to ramp up operations even more. Aero-TV Checks Out The Robinson R66: Turbine Power, Familiar Face
from Aero-TV Network on March 08, 2009
Duration: 487
Duration: 487
Frank's 'Robby' Helos Go Turbine The Robinson R66 is one of the few bright spots in an otherwise bleak outlook for the future of light aircraft over the next few years. The Roll-Royce RR300 powered five place helo is scheduled to see certification within the next year and deliveries shortly thereafter... but none too soon for Robinson Helicopter... whose once lofty sales numbers are getting hammered by a global economic meltdown. After setting sales records in 2008, especially in terms of foreign shipments (even catching the attention of then President Bush, who stopped by to get a look at the operation for himself), Robinson sees the R66 as a serious competitor for future turbine helo buyers who are looking for the simplicity and cost-effectiveness pretty much absent from the competition. The R66 is powered by the RR300, and engine that was specifically developed in consultation with Robinson, and optimized for the R66. The Model 300 is a modernized derivative of the Rolls-Royce Model 250, thought the new model number coincides with the takeoff power rating of the 300-shaft horsepower powerplant. This takeoff rating is lower than for the Model 250 line, resulting in lower turbine temperatures that will allow a 2,000-hour TBO of the turbine to match the 2,000-hour airframe overall planned for the R66 -- a minimum standard on all Robinson products. The Model 300 also features a simplified single-stage centrifugal compressor that, along with a lower acquisition cost, is expected to result in lower maintenance costs. The R66 maintains the simplicity and dependability designed to the Robinson line since the very first R22. The R66 will retain many proven design features of current Robinson aircraft including a two-bladed rotor, T-bar cyclic, and the same open cabin configuration found in the R44. Initial cockpits will offer analog instrumentation, which Robinson promises will ease the transition from the piston R44 to the turbine R66. Seating will accommodate two adults in the front and three in the back. Pilot seats are a mite wider and legroom has been increased, to boot, with an overall cabin width increase of eight inches. New to the R66 is a dedicated baggage compartment large enough to hold golf clubs or a professional chain saw and tools. The certified empty weight is expected to be 1270 pounds, with a useful load of 1300 -- a solid 300 pounds over the R44. The R66's projected price is expected to hover just south of $1 million, which is 'more than a fully equipped R44 Raven II, but less than the Bell Jet Ranger.' Aero-TV Gets Reved Up Over The RotaMax Rotary Powerplant
from Aero-TV Network on September 16, 2008
Duration: 497
Duration: 497
Rotary Motivations: The RotaMax Powerplant Program In the midst of all the amazing things that comprise the annal Oshkosh Fly-In, Aero-TV took some time out at the 2008 rendition to talk with Eric Barger, president of RotaMax Rotary Engines. This company is introducing a line of aviation rotaries based on a long-established, non-automotive design. The company recently signed a tentative OEM agreement to furnish a twin-rotor powerplant for an upcoming light-sport aircraft. The RotaMax engine is a Wankel-type rotary engine, named after the German inventor Felix Wankel. Instead of conventional pistons reciprocating inside cylinders with a complex valvetrain, the Wankel has a rotor shaped roughly like a triangle that runs inside a housing with an epitrochoidal cavity shaped roughly like a figure 8. The rotor is geared in relation to an eccentric shaft, which is the equivalent to the crankshaft inside a piston engine. The rotor covers and uncovers ports as it rotates inside the housing, enabling four-stroke Otto-cycle operation without valves. The rotor uses seals as the equivalent of piston rings, including apex seals at the points of the rotor and side seals on the sides. RotaMax opines that Wankel engines are inherently smoother and easier to balance because of the rotary operation. For the same output as a piston engine, a Wankel will generally be smaller and lighter and will have far fewer parts, particularly moving parts. In certain applications even in the 1970s, for the power produced in the application the rotary had and has favorable fuel economy. Because it has a four-stroke cycle, the rotary can use the same performance tuning operations, external accessories, and emissions control devices as a conventional engine. RotaMax has particularly high hopes for their future aviation offerings. They note that 'Aviation Enthusiasts are always searching for more power! But, they want it with lower emissions, lower vibration, higher power-to-weight, smaller package. We are currently working with several manufacturers designing next generation aircraft for the RotaMax Rotary Engine.' Though currently not certified, RotaMax explains that they are doing the work necessary to assure that their twin-spark, twin ignition engines will conform to the ASTM E-LSA, S-LSA, LSA protocols... and with enough time and experience, General Aviation Certification. They feel they have an interesting powerplant for a number of air vehicles... be they airships, blimps, gyrocopters, fixed wings, floatplanes or seaplanes, Ultralights, Light Sport Aircraft (S-SLA), Experimental, Homebuilt Kits, or Helicopters. RotaMax is currently concentrating its efforts on two aviation powerplant platforms with two variations of each: A Gear-Reduced 650cc Single Rotor Down Draft Engine A Gear-Reduced 650cc Single Rotor Side Draft Engine A Gear-Reduced 1300cc Twin Rotor Down Draft Engine A Gear-Reduced 1300cc Twin Rotor Side Draft Engine Rev Up Your Rotary Engine Knowledge With Aero-TV and RotaMax Rotary Engines! A Versatile Heli-UAV Program While perusing the many sights and sounds of the 2008 Heli-Expo, ANN's Aero-TV crews got a look at an intriguing helicopter-based UAV program with a number of missions applications and capabilities. Call the CybAero 'Vantage', this UAV is a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned helicopter developed by US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). With fully autonomous flight operation and differential GPS navigation, CybAero claims the Vantage can perform a wide variety of missions in both military and commercial applications. The Vantage is powered by a specially configured UEL 801 42-HP heavy-fuel (JP5, JP8, Jet A) rotary engine, utilizing an electrically driven ducted tail rotor, powered by an onboard starter/generator. This configuration saves weight and mechanical complexity. The overall fuselage length is 112 inches with a rotor diameter of 109 inches. CybAero utilizes a foldable tri-blade system making the Vantage HMMWV-transportable. It has a gross weight of 380 lb., and a payload capacity of 25 35 lb. The UAV has an estimated endurance of 3 5 hours with a top (dash) speed of 100 kts, along with a service ceiling of 8,000 feet. The concept was the brainchild of the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), while the Vantage project now continues as a collaboration between NRL and CybAero under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement. NRL has in-depth experience in designing and developing UAV prototypes and has been conducting research in unmanned systems technologies since the mid 1970s. CybAero now holds the exclusive commercial rights for Vantage worldwide. In February 2008 the Vantage's first test flight, under the NRL/CybAero agreement, took place on a restricted range near NRL's Washington DC facility in the USA. This year, CybAero and the United States Naval Research Laboratory will be continuing the development and commercialization of the Vantage, with a market introduction currently scheduled for 2009. Not Just Another Pretty Set Of Rotors While perusing the wares at HAI 2008, we had the chance to catch up with a helicopter that, frankly, rarely seems to get the attention it deserves. Enstrom's 480B, a carefully updated and accomplished turbine helicopter may be one of the industry's best kept secrets but we're pleased to see that the secret seems to be finally giving way to more attention for a solid rotorcraft. Enstrom tells us that the 480 series was developed to provide a more affordable, but equally competent, light turbine helicopter to a market historically dominated by the Bell 206B Jet Ranger and MD500. A thorough development program, which included three test aircraft and over 1500 hours of flight verification, led to FAA certification to FAR 27 standards in 1994. FAR 27 is a more current and rigorous certification basis than that achieved by the competitors in this class. The moist recent iteration, the 480B series, has now been certified in 16 countries and has already been operated in 18 countries. With over 90 aircraft in the field now, the 480B is proving to be a popular choice for a wide range of applications, including personal transport, flight instruction, law enforcement, power line patrol, executive transport (charter), electronic news gathering, pipeline patrol, aerial photography, sightseeing, and cargo/passenger delivery. The E-480B boasts a Gross Weight of 3,000 lbs, an Empty Weight (Std. Equip.) of 1,820 lbs, and a Useful Load of as much as 1,180 lbs. The 480B cruises as fast as 109 kts (TAS @ 3,000 ft./3000 lbs.), with a Service Ceiling of 10,000 ft (at 3000 lbs.). The 90 gal fuel capacity offers a max range of 370 NM at 3000 ft (with an endurance of 4.5 hours). The Enstrom is powered by a 420 SHP Rolls-Royce 250-C20W Turbine offering a Max Rate of Climb (@ SL/3000 lbs.) of 1,600 fpm. Hover ceilings measure out at 12,300 ft (HIGE at 3000 lbs.), while the Hover Out of Ground Effect (HOGE) capabilities are tagged at 5400 feet (again, at 3000 lbs).
