POD: Yes AGAIN WE CALL FOR WAR - AGAINST The WAR On US
from BadGalsRadio - RootsRock since 99' June 13, 2008
Yes Again WE CALL FOR WAR - AGAINST WAR ! War is a terrible thing and because we have seen the ramifications of this war, we are more willing to talk about the End of War. Why do we have to suffer the Dead-end result of Racist, Poverty Ridden relations with society ? why should We be the scapegoats for all that is wrong ? Just this past weekend we ran a story on Amy Winehouse and her totally racist little video song; it was par for the course from what we can see of Ms. Amyturd. It s clear that her drug addicted incoherent drama binges; filmed by her golddigging husband blake - only clarify that White is the Color of Choice; for society. She can come out with a song using the simple melody of a childrens song and turn it into a racist taunt - caught on tape . She can Smoke Crack on Tape ; yet nothing is said, basically. why is that ? Robert Mugabe on the other hand, is a turd of a different bitter type. he steals food rations from Schoolkids to pass out at his political rallys; to people too hungry to resist his murderous regime. We are advocating for Pennies for Bobby Turd . We think if enough pennies are melted down and a huge copper suppository created - we just may be able to Move Him Out As The Ass of Zimbabwe US Tricky Turd George Bush and his Bilderburg buddies held their annual conference in New York recently and it appears their plan is to steadily increase the cost of petrol, food and relevant people needs; until they have created a false global emergency; large enough that they can take over total management of society. Remember Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izSUgDfw_eM We ask again, Is This the Type of World We Want to Live In ? and Leave for Our Decendants ? We think NOT - so unite with us and SAY NO To WAR Against US; The People of This Planet. we ve surveyed the landscape widely; and it s sorely clear that if you don t say no today, tomorrow there may be no way. Yes Again WE CALL FOR WAR - AGAINST WAR ! Remember Your Mother left YOU in Charge; To ACT Responsibly and Stop This Planetary Genocide. Join Us and Do It NOW. Beenie Man Biography Set For July Release
from BadGalsRadio - RootsRock since 99' June 11, 2008
Beenie Man Biography Set For July Release | The News is NowPublic.com Beenie Man Biography Set For July Release by reggaewire | June 10, 2008 at 09:17 pm The sensational new book on the life of dancehall king Beenie Man has finally been scheduled for worldwide release this summer. The forthcoming biography, Who Am I? The Untold Story of Beenie Man, will treat fans of dancehall music to more than four hundred pages of intrigue, eye-opening revelations and never-before-seen colour photographs depicting the young superstar s life. Who Am I? The Untold Story of Beenie Man is the world s first-ever dancehall biography, and is being published by Jamaican publishers Great House OmniMedia in time for Reggae Sumfest. Written by noted Jamaican journalist Milton Wray, the story tracks the twists and turns of Beenie Man s dramatic life, following in great detail the reggae superstar s rise from childhood to the Grammy Award, numerous other honours and musical firsts, including an unequalled string of chart-topping hits. The author worked on the project for more than eleven years, documenting Beenie Man s tabloid-rich life and career as they unfolded. After first contacting the artiste in 1994, Wray eventually took a sabbatical from Jamaican journalism to live and do research in New York City for more than a year. While in the United States, he conducted interviews and collected vast amounts of information on Beenie Man and his international impact on the music business. While writing the book in Jamaica, Wray did in-depth research by interviewing a host of persons including relatives, friends, associates, music business personnel, rivals and, of course, the girlfriends of the reggae/dancehall icon. Readers who might be concerned about not getting the full story of Beenie Man have no reason to worry, says the author, who promises an unvarnished view of The Doctor. Who Am I? is a journalistic work, Wray insists, and the primary objective is to be accurate. While Beenie Man did cooperate by supplying information and photographs for the publication of the book, he did not have approval of the manuscript, and never saw a page of it before it was completed. The intention was not to put out a public relations piece for the artiste. The facts are presented as they occurred, whether or not Beenie Man likes those facts. He has led a very controversial life, and he acknowledges that; he recently told me as much. I believe he is prepared for whatever revelations may come from this book. It s going to be very exciting once it hits the streets, Wray continued, commenting on the completion of the work. Who Am I? is something that readers will not be able to put down, because Beenie Man has had such an amazing life from his childhood in Waterhouse to the present day that it s going to be mind-blowing. The book is as engrossing as any novel only everything in it is factual. Set to be launched in Kingston in early July, the book will be distributed in North America, the European Union, the CARICOM region and Japan before the end of the year. For its Asian release, Who Am I? will be translated into Japanese. According to Great House s Michael Grant, who began conducting preliminary promotions and answering reader s queries at the recent Calabash Literary Festival, Interest in the Beenie Man Biography is already high for something that has not yet been advertised or offered for sale. Readers are going to be surprised by the touching humanity and detail of this true story about Beenie Man, both as a person and as an international phenomenon. In many ways, it s also a mini-history of dancehall, giving insight into the inner workings of the local music industry in much the same way the Jamaican hit movie, The Harder They Come, did in the 1970s. Commenting on the secrecy behind the production of the highly anticipated work, Grant said Because some of the details in the book have never been publicly revealed previously, it was important for the author to be able to work without giving advance interviews. After all, some of the events in the story were unfolding as he worked, and he managed to get the story behind many of the stories we often read in the press, especially about his private life. As one can imagine, the controversies surrounding Beenie Man have made almost every page of Who Am I? top-secret. His fans can t wait to get their hands on this very well-researched and well-written account the first of several volumes, probably of a spectacular life and career still in progress. Reviewer s copies of the book have been sent to a select number of entertainment press in markets where the book will be available. Local distribution will be handled mainly by Novelty Trading Company, while the bulk of North American and European markets will be serviced by A Copyright 2008 BadGalsRadio - RootsRock since 99'. MUGS Raids target Zimbabwe opposition party - Takes a group of global journalists hostage - Idiot Business Agwan Now
from BadGalsRadio ~ I-riginal 100%GalBassed RooticalTruth April 04, 2008
Raids target Zimbabwe opposition party - CNN.com HARARE, Zimbabwe (CNN) Zimbabwean government forces Thursday began cracking down on the main opposition party, raising fears of a political crisis, according to witnesses and an opposition spokesman. Zimbabweans listen to a radio in Harare, the capital, as they await results of the country s elections. 1 of 3 more photos » The forces raided at least two hotels in the capital, including one that houses foreign journalists, a witness said. Four journalists unaccredited by the Zimbabwean government were taken away, he said. New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller confirmed that Barry Bearak, a Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent based in Johannesburg, South Africa, was taken into custody. He was apparently one of a number of Americans and other foreign nationals rounded up today, Keller said. An American consular official who visited him at the central police station reported that he was being held for violation of the journalism laws. We are making every effort to assure that he is well treated, and to secure his prompt release, Keller said. The identities of the other journalists seized in the raid were not immediately known. State Department spokesman Tom Casey said the United States is calling for the immediate release of Americans seized by Zimbabwe authorities. We are concerned about the taking into custody of several American citizens, Casey said. There is no reason for that. We want to see them released as soon as possible. State Department officials said they were bound by privacy constraints and couldn t say how many American reporters were taken. Tendai Biti, secretary-general for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, said his party s offices in another Harare hotel were also raided by Zimbabwean forces. Some of the rooms were ransacked, The Associated Press reported. Don t Miss Panel: Mugabe s party loses grip on parliament Mugabe: Liberation hero turned tyrant Blog: Change is in the air Time: How long will Mugabe hang on? There s a definite crackdown, Biti said. No one was detained in that raid, he added. The action targeted certain people including myself, Biti told the AP. It is quite clear he has unleashed a war, he said, referring to Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. The crackdown came hours after the government announced another delay in releasing some of last weekend s election results, raising fears that Mugabe is trying to come up with a plan to remain in power. Many are predicting a runoff election. Watch why a runoff is likely » In spite of this, on Wednesday the MDC declared Tsvangirai the outright winner, saying he took 50.3 percent of the almost 2.4 million votes. The state-run newspaper reported Wednesday that Mugabe and Tsvangirai will compete in a presidential runoff because neither candidate garnered more than 50 percent of the vote. Watch the claims and counterclaims » But even some in Mugabe s own party believe he should step down. A ZANU-PF member, who did not want to be named for security reasons, reported a deep schism in the party Thursday, saying some members believe Mugabe should gracefully cede power. The top guys have been given a rude awakening, said the lawmaker, adding that the party s brass is shell-shocked by the results and had not expected the apparent defeat. The lawmaker, who lost his seat to an opposition challenger, further said a presidential runoff will be a suicide mission and should be a last resort for the ruling party. Mugabe is finished, he added. We cannot win, so why go for it? he said. Once people have tasted victory, you don t take it away from them. But Zimbabwean Deputy Information Minister Bright Matonga said he did not expect Mugabe to step down. I don t see that at all, he said. And why should he? We have to go all the way. That is what the law says. According to the state-run newspaper, The Herald, the elections for parliament s lower house came down to a photo finish, with MDC taking 99 seats and ZANU-PF 97. Eleven posts in the 210-seat body went to an independent and members of a smaller opposition party. Three seats will have to be decided in a later election because the opposition candidates have died, the paper reported. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said Thursday it has postponed releasing results from elections for the Senate, parliament s upper house. The government blames the delays in announcing results on logistics, noting that four elections were held simultaneously. Matonga has said the law gives the government until Friday to release the results. A look at the candidates » Mugabe, who was prime minister before taking the presidential post in 1987, has been in power since Zimbabwe s independence from Britain 28 years ago. The election represents the toughest challenge to power he has ever faced. See photos from the country s elections » A year after the last presidential election which the MDC alleges was stolen the government charged Tsvangirai with treason. He was acquitted. The MDC accused Mugabe of trying to eliminate him as a challenger. Zimbabwe faced international sanctions after the 2002 election, including travel restrictions on Zimbabwean officials. A hero of the country s civil war against the white Rhodesian government, Mugabe became the country s first black leader in 1980. Nearly three decades later, he has consolidated his rule over all aspects of Zimbabwean life. Once revered for providing some of the best education and health care in Africa, Zimbabwe now has one of the lowest life expectancies in the world. Schooling is a luxury. Once known as the breadbasket of southern Africa, now it is difficult to get basic food supplies. Inflation has skyrocketed to more than 100,000 percent, while food production and agricultural exports have dropped drastically. Copyright 2008 BadGalsRadio ~ I-riginal 100%GalBassed RooticalTruth. You’ve Paved The Way To Zion My Idren, Mikey Dread
from BadGalsRadio ~ I-riginal 100%GalBassed RooticalTruth March 17, 2008
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SqGei_yFUo WE Wanted to take a moment out and share the wonder of our Idren Mikey Dread - before the world fades him to Black. Having spent a few hours chatting here and there with Mikey, I feel empowered to relay his message in His Way . Mikey was an extraordinary individual; as charismatic and talented as the day was long. His charm opened many doors - and his personal choices slammed others shut. Mikey Left Us on Saturday March 15, 2008 at approximately 4:30pm in Connecticut; surrounded by his loving family and relishing in his glorious career and lifetime accomplishments It may be years before we see the full payout from his shrewd business decisions come to fruition in platinum sales. But be assured that with Mushiya and Monika - Mikey s Angels at the helm, his legacy will continue to Flourish and Grow for many many years to come. Mikey left at least two albums in different stages of completion; and we are sure that in time when the vault is opened, we will find masterpieces of Mikeys Creativity readied for release. who knows how many reels of unconverted tape Mikey kept in secret boxes. during our interview he hinted to me that he had several Unfinished Edi Fitzroy cuts - that he planned to release if they resumed their collaboration. which now will never happen. I still wonder if those gems will see the light of day, when Monika decides what to release and when. Unlike many other great Reggae Producers and Talents - Mikey controlled the rights and business contracts of his musical productions to the end. His legacy will yield gold for his family; as he designed in his last years. when things got bad in the early years, Mikey held back signing contracts after deals stunted his growth prematurely. he knew that if he controlled his music, and his distribution - he would be a hit, always. Today I realized that during the final 3 years of Mikeys time with us, he built the foundation of stability that will sustain his legacy. His marriage to Monika left a sour taste in the mouths of some, but for Mikey it was Pure Joy. Monika provided Mikey with his final platinum act - A Son Jah Light - born in October of 2007 - and from all reports, The Apple Of His Fathers Eye. We spoke with Reggae Superstar and Radio Personality Edi Fitzroy and The Musical Ambassador Trevor Elliott; Two of Mikeys oldest business confidants; last night, about their relationships with Mikey Dread. They both related to me their memories in balmy terms of how Mikey did business - Shrewdly. I know personally that for Edi, it has been very difficult personally to deal with the memories of their painful breakup as a duo - because he often felt disappointed in the loss of such a great collaborative team. they both went on to become blockbuster artists in their own rights; but when we look back, wouldn t we all want to hear just one more tune with Edi and Mikey.. I know I sure did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfGwU6n2cXA During my interview with Mikey in June 2007, we talked in length about his feelings about the break up with Edi Fitzroy; and he was also still sad and he lamented to me openly about the loss of both their working collaboration and the damage it did to their friendship. I learned from Edi just last night that Mikey had phoned him last while he was in California performing; and that they had discussed the possibility of a two man tour. Edi told me that Mikey had said Ok, come mek we do it ; finally. I believe Mikey said it, to instill hope in Edi that their friendship was again on the uproad to repair. Mikey undoubtedly knew by this time that his tumor had returned; and I personally believe that he was already in preparation for his longterm treatment. maybe the tour was on his bucket list - who knows with Mikey Dread; as he always teased you with possibility. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK04f_pm2-E how great that would have been. to see the two lions roaring side by side. the world will never have that chance now that Mikey has left us and gone to Zion. When I spoke to Trevor Elliott earlier today, he casually informed me that Mikey Forced him into the booth, to act as engineer and to record African Map . This is the very tune he handed to Trevor, as he made plans to move from Florida to North Carolina last summer. Trevor had no idea that this would be his last time sitting and drinking a juice with his idren, Mikey Dread. this past fall when Trevor got the call about the tumor, he was afraid this would be Mikey s last fight. he knew how hard the previous battle had been for Mikey, with the first tumor; and that Mikey had resigned himself to Do As Much Work as He Could, before he couldn t. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YM8aQeMlIuE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bcK0V6v3GA Mikey Was A Work a Holic to the end.. having dates still booked; even after he was diagnosed with the deadly brain tumor. Mikey never gave up hope, or complained about his illness. he was a perfect example of preparation in action for your trip to zion. I am deeply saddened by the loss of My Friend and Mentor, Mikey Dread - but mostly I am glad to have had the privilege of being the One He Trusted, enough to Give His Final Interview for the world. We Shall Celebrate Mikey Dread s Nine Night in collabaration with Foundationsound.co.uk; reggaenostalgia.com; musicalambassador.com and mikeydread.com. We ask you to please remember Mikey s Family in Your Prayers, and to Visit Mikey s Website and Enjoy the Photos, Music and Purchase Mementos of Dread At The Controls. Mikey Dread is one of the most influential performers and innovators in reggae music. His abilities, technical expertise, and unique vocal delivery combine to create a unique sound that tells the listener emphatically that it is the Dread at the Controls. Perhaps Mikey s work with The Clash has garnered him with the most recognition, but his credentials and resume started long before his eye-opening production on several releases with the renowned Punk Stars from London. His work and interaction with The Clash was a significant event in the integration of reggae into popular music throughout the world. The album, Black Market Clash , is a brilliant fusion of late 1970 s punk rock and a heavy reggae bass and drum line. The reggae aspect of The Clash s album distinguished their sound from the other punks that emerged in the 1970 s. Soon thereafter, it was a must for just about every punk band to have a reggae cover song on their album. Mikey was the first Producer ever to produce a UK chart hit for The Clash Bank Robber and later produced several reggae cuts on their internationally recognized Album Sandinista. Mikey s avid interest in reggae music led him to acquire an immense collection of crucial vinyl which he used to gain notoriety as a young DJ and audio engineer with the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) where he began his broadcasting career in 1976. There he developed his own unique broadcasting style, which has been adopted by virtually every reggae radio show in Jamaica and the world today. His radio show, which became known as Dread at the Controls, was firmly established as the Number One Radio Show in Jamaica. Mikey was awarded Top Radio Personality of the Year in 1977-1978. In 1979, having resigned from JBC, Mikey decided to expand his career by getting more involved in the actual production of not only his own music, but also the work of others such as Sugar Minott, Junior Murvin, Earl Sixteen, Wally Bucker, Sunshine, Jah Grundy and Rod Taylor. His activities attracted the attention of The Clash, who asked Mikey to work with them. They produced Bank Robber and the already mentioned Black Market Clash , which sold over 3 million copies. His work on The Clash s most famous album Sandinista is internationally recognized. Mikey studied at the National Broadcasting School in London where he perfected his media production/radio broadcasting skills, graduating with special commendations in 1980. Mikey Dread has used his great and refined engineering talents to further reggae music in the United Kingdom and the world. He believes in a multimedia approach to publicizing reggae. Some of his works in the United Kingdom include narrating reggae documentaries, hosting series such as Rockers Roadshow and the ever popular six-part Channel 4 reggae documentary series Deep Roots Music . Pave the Way did what the title suggest for Mikey s career by appealing to a broad audience with catchy numbers like the track s Reggae Hit Shot , a dance song on the Hustle rhythm. The album Happy Family is another step in the evolution of Mikey s upbeat sound. He later recorded The Source (Of Your Divorce) for Warner Brothers Records USA, which obtained regularly rotated video airplay on BET as well as on MTV s hip-hop/rap program Yo MTV Raps . MTV s Sunsplash Special, which was shot in his native Jamaica, featured Mikey s video in 1990. Mikey released Mikey Dread s Best Sellers (Rykodisc, 1991), a stunning compilation of Mikey s best known songs including Barber Saloon (#1 on Jamaican and British Reggae charts in 1979), and the classic Roots and Culture . Mikey then went on to record Profile and African Anthem Revisited (RAS Records, 1991). He toured in Europe and the USA with Freddie McGregor, Lloyd Parks and We The People Band and also the Roots Radics Band. In 1992, he collaborated with former Guns n Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin on a duet entitled Can t Hear Em . He also headlined a charity event in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he earned a merit award from the Mayor. Other projects during this period include producing the Ju Ju Hounds on Can t Hear Em and Pressure Drop . One of his tracks Breakdown the Walls was featured in the movie The Rift. Also in this year he was nominated for a NAIRD award, an award from the Billboard Magazine, for his work on his album Mikey Dread s Best Sellers . In 1993, Mikey Dread was involved in several projects, including his tour supporting the album Obsession and working in TV with the Caribbean Satellite Network (CSN) where he was Program Director and On Air personality as well as Producer of various shows. These shows included Artists Profile , New Video Showcase , Video Dub Plate , Christmas Around The Caribbean , Christmas with the Children , Celebrity Guest DJ , a mini documentary on the music of Trinidad and Tobago and The Bob Marley Hall of Fame Induction . Mikey furthered his knowledge of TV/Video Production at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, where he graduated in 1996 with Honors and at Lynn University in Boca Raton / Florida where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Communications, with Magna Cum Laude honors. Other activities done by The Innovator include working for the Video Jukebox as voice-over talent in several Reggae TV Commercials. The Culture Award of Honor in the Martin s International Reggae Music Awards in Chicago was presented to him in 1994. He also participated in the Caribbean Music Festival as an Entertainment Consultant in Nassau / Bahamas throughout the 1990 s. In 1995, he worked as a Radio DJ for WAVS 1170 AM and WAXY-AM 790 in Miami, Florida. In 1996 he participated in the Essential Music Festival as a performer in Brighton, U.K. He worked as a News Photographer for Metro Video shooting daily TV news stories for NBC-6 News station in Miami / Florida and in the summer of 1998 he performed at several European Festivals in Germany, Belgium and Austria. In February 1999 Mikey performed with the School Band at the 18th Annual Bob Marley Day show in San Diego and also at the Long Beach Arena in California. One of the better character traits of Mikey Dread is that he has refused to over saturate the Reggae market by simply not appearing on every Reggae event. This has helped him to maintain his credibility and mystique. Michael Campbell is a man of world diversity and immense resourcefulness. His rhythms have defined reggae and have helped with its global development. From Pave The Way to Breaking Down the Walls , there is a unique blend of rhythms only found in the man that everyone seems to see as Dread at the Controls . Mikey Dread s origination of reggae broadcast programming has given the world a formula for reggae that has been adopted by DJ s and broadcast networks worldwide. Today Mikey Dread continues his mission taking Reggae music door to door with the release of his Limited Edition CD World Tour however his 1980 album World War III has begun selling huge numbers again. Throughout the years 1998-2001 Mikey has been making impressive and captivating live concert performances with the Fully Fullwood Band across Hawaii and California. Most recently he has performed in Brighton, England with his UK Band Colors late October 2001 getting rave reviews and requests from other venues to return to Europe in 2002. His performances in Italy in November 2001 in Bari and Rome has re-established him as one of the original roots reggae icons of the mid-seventies/early 80s reggae era of Jamaican music. His mission continues, globally. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SatwjXJQn_w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbvbmlkYwnM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnNWV5jkyXQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTI_yJta8lY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDt1tdppuj8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8ybiqijhIc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjSkDfEv7_c Copyright 2008 BadGalsRadio ~ I-riginal 100%GalBassed RooticalTruth. Raelians Rocket From Clones to Clitorises; Thank GOD
from BadGalsRadio ~ I-riginal 100%GalBassed RooticalTruth February 24, 2008
Raelians Rocket From Clones to Clitorises Raelians Rocket From Clones to Clitorises By Eliza Strickland 02.19.08 | 12:00 AM Clitoraid is an nonprofit organization set up by the Raelian Movement to help women around the world who have suffered genital mutilation. The woman on the right of the photo is wearing a clitoris costume. Photo: Tony McNicol The Raelians have championed some strange causes in the movement s 25-year history, including aliens and human clones, but now they are going to bat for a body part the clitoris. The cult s leader, Rael, whose real name is Claude Vorilhon, has become outraged by the custom of female genital cutting, the primarily African practice in which part of a girl s genitalia is sliced away. Now the Raelian Movement has resolved to build a hospital in the West African country of Burkina Faso, where women could come to have their clitorises reconstructed. Rael thought this is a crime against humanity, says Lara Terstenjak, a spokeswoman for Clitoraid, a nonprofit set up by the Raelians to sponsor genital surgeries. Female circumcision is surprisingly prevalent throughout the world, particularly in Africa, where in some communities it is performed on 98 percent of the female population, despite legal prohibition. Coming as it does from the group that claimed to have produced the first human clone, the Raelians boast that they re sponsoring clitoris reconstruction seems open to question. Yet the group has reputable doctors on its side. The Raelians have recruited Marci Bowers, who runs a thriving sex-change clinic in Trinidad, Colorado, and has been called the rock star of transgender surgery. Bowers is a post-op transsexual herself. Bowers flew to Paris last April (on her own dime) to train with Pierre Foldes, an Ob-Gyn in Paris who reportedly invented the technique of clitoris reconstruction after many years of treating women in Africa. Foldes performs about 200 of these surgeries each year. According to Terstenjak, Foldes declined to get involved directly with Clitoraid, but he agreed to perform the surgery on women sponsored by the Raelians, and to instruct other doctors in his technique. Terstenjak says Clitoraid has sponsored six women so far, including several from Burkina Faso who were flown to Paris to have the surgery done. Foldes did not return a phone call from Wired.com, but Bowers confirms that the doctor worked on the six women helped by the cult. When Bowers first started talking with the Raelians, her working theory was that they were a little bit nuts, she says. But after a long, leisurely dinner in Paris with 10 cultured and international Raelians, she declared herself charmed. They weren t anything different. It s just that they bought into this philosophy involving extraterrestrial beings on earth, she says. I don t have to buy into the whole concept to do the work. During Bowers training with Foldes, they operated on 15 women in one day. Bowers remembers one of the young women they saw on the operating table. She was about 19 years old, and she and her twin sister had both had the genital-cutting procedure when they were little girls living in Mauritania. Her twin sister had died, the woman said, because the cut was too deep, and they couldn t stop the bleeding. Bowers recalls that the woman had the most severe form of genital cutting, called infibulation, in which the clitoris and inner lips of the vulva are completely removed, and the outer lips are sewn partially shut to leave only a small hole. Surgeries to reverse this kind of genital cutting have become fairly common in Europe as African immigrants become more westernized. However, Foldes is currently the only doctor who attempts to go the extra step, not just dividing the sewn-together skin, but also constructing a new clitoris. It s not terribly invasive, Bowers says. She explains that the surgeon first removes the scar tissue, and then looks for what the cutting procedure left behind. The clitoris, Bowers says, is almost like a snail. Most of it is curled up behind the pubic bone, but there s one tip pointed out, and that s the clitoris. So you re first exposing the remaining stump of the clitoris, and then bringing it forward with some suturing. Foldes performs the surgeries for free and in addition to his regular hospital work, Bowers says, and she expects to do the same. She plans to start seeing patients at her Colorado offices, and will fly to Burkina Faso for a month of surgeries as soon as the Raelians get the hospital built. She doesn t mind donating her time to the cause, and has also donated some money to help with the hospital: This is building karma, she says. While construction of what the Raelians call the pleasure hospital has been delayed, Terstenjak insists the building will rise within the next year. The group says it has bought a piece of land in a suburb of Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso s second-largest city. Here s a beautiful piece of information, Terstenjak says. There actually have been women coming out, known (genital-cutting) victims, and they want to help. They ve put themselves forward to the construction team, saying, we ve never done anything like this, but we ll carry bricks, we ll dig holes, whatever needs to be done. Terstenjak claims that more than 100 women are on a waiting list for the procedure in Burkina Faso, and that there s no requirement that these women join the Raelian Movement. However, one of the women who Clitoraid sponsored for the procedure is referred to as a guide, a term used in the Raelian hierarchy. There have been allegations that the Raelian Movement uses its doctrine of free love to attract recruits (such as this 2005 article from Wired.com), and sensual massage is reportedly a key part of their seminars. Some people say they were first attracted to the movement because they thought they would get laid, says Susan Palmer, a professor of religious studies at Montreal s Dawson College who wrote a book on the Raelians. But more than recruiting, it s a way for people within the movement to bond, she says. So could Clitoraid s effort to bring new clitorises to African women be a recruiting technique? Palmer laughs at the suggestion. That would be an extremely expensive and round-about way to do it, she says. They could just give them some food. Like the Christian missionaries they just feed people, and they flock to their churches. But that would be an old-school way of proselytizing. The Raelian Movement, as it prepares a better Earth for the extraterrestrial s return (expected before 2035), is nothing if not forward-thinking. What amazes me, Palmer says with a tone of respect, is that they are so inventive. Copyright 2008 BadGalsRadio ~ I-riginal 100%GalBassed RooticalTruth. The Boston Massicka - The Riddim Juggler Tosses it to Mama ASID From our first faithful meeting on the TCOOO Blog ; Massicka has been Forthright, Honest and a genuine delight to share an exchange with. This week we go to the Youth Man Posse to tell us how they feel about This Generation and Reggae Music . Several pods ago we ran two episodes with Bob Andy. When DJ Mass heard the interviews he wrote me and immediately requested equal time for a rebuttal. This is that Rebuttal, also in two parts. this is part one; with part deux coming during January 2008. Dj Mass says that Confusion about the youth and young musicians; has led to the splintering of the dancehall. Mass Reveals how Bob Andy turned down royalties for use of his sample in the Massicker Hit Ackee in my Salt Fish . This tune will be released in spring 2008; on a Going Home Riddim compilation - by MusicalAmbassador Label (MAMG). Mass tells us what he s working on; and what he predicts will buss the scene, fresh in 08 . When asked his opinion on the Beenie Man; Movado Star Complex he really shows us his strength and breaks it down. Massicka sites examples of bad character being adopted and why the minds of reggae lovers globally are being negatively reprogrammed - causing dances like the Drop Dead to become phenomena amongst the youth. When asked about this negative dancehall tradition of violence from the stage and the crowd; DJ Mass said this - Dancehall don t beat people down, people hold people down Massicka is a Real Warrior for The Roots and Culture; and when he puts out the battle cry, all will listen. The harmonies we enjoy bring us back to a place we remember as Foundation Sound . DJ Massicka is a part of the Vibrant Viral Soundsystem ; based in Boston. being a student - he is often seen spinning in and around Boston. Mass. We suggest You check him out in action on Myspace; because The Brotha Has Something To Say. as Well We invite you to check out TCOOO s Blog on MySpace - technorati calls TCOOO THE Black Blog on Myspace and In Blackspace ; and Blogtress The Fabulously Gorgeous Ms. Gigi James author of I Didn t Sign Up for This ; all a big part of the Massicka Foundation. WTF ? Gays Getting Western goverments to make Reggae Dancehall illegal ??

Gays Getting Western goverments to make Reggae Dancehall illegal : Source nowtoronto.com 30/11/07 12:47:52 pm, Categories: Reggae International Gays Getting Western goverments to make Reggae Dancehall illegal : Source nowtoronto.com Gays and Lesbians declare all out war on Reggae Dancehall! Dancehall dons anti-gay lyrics fuel local calls for Jamaica sanctions By SIGCINO MOYO In his book words to our now, Thomas Glave, SUNY Binghamton prof and gay Jamaican-American author, ponders the gnawing fear of the Jamaican LGBT experience. How will it happen? he asks of the all-too-inevitable violence faced by gays and lesbians in Jamaica. With fire gasoline machetes pickaxes hammers guns knives simple strangling or a good old-fashioned stoning Will our father do it to us, or a neighbour? A boyfriend, or a co-worker? Will everyone in our community turn on us? Considerable international attention has been given recently to anti-gay violence in Jamaica following a rash of deaths there. Elephant Man in Action The seeming Jamaican government authorities reluctance to do anything about it, despite calls from Amnesty International, has Helen Kennedy, the executive director of Egale Canada, the largest gay-lesbian group in this country, openly questioning the Harper government s pledge to dole out $600 million to bolster the infrastructure of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries over the next 10 years. Why are we using taxpayers dollars to support countries that don t observe basic human rights? Kennedy wonders. Jamaica still has a prohibition against the abominable crime of buggery on the books. And nowhere in recent talk of constitutional reform on the island is the issue of gay rights addressed. Egale is stopping short of calling for an all-out tourism boycott - the U.S.-based International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association says boycotts do nothing to help the LGBT communities there. But from Kennedy s perspective, queers should think twice about spending their bucks in the Caribbean country, as well as others with spotty records on gay rights. The group has joined Stop Murder Music Canada (SMM) in calling on immigration authorities to follow the lead of Britain and the U.S. and bar from entry into Canada reggae dancehall acts known for virulent anti-gay lyrics. So far, there s been a resounding non-response from higher up the political food chain. Capleton The FireMan In what Kennedy calls an all-out campaign, Egale and SMM have set their sights on local promoters, bookers and venues, forcing the recent cancellation of shows featuring some of the more notoriously anti-gay dancehall dons - Capleton, Baby Cham and Beenie Man, all skedded for GTA-area gigs. Baby Cham Shows by Sizzla and Elephant Man were called off a few weeks earlier, although it s unclear how much lagging ticket sales had to do with the latter. Sizzla Chris Hines, the booker behind the Capleton, Baby Cham and Beenie Man gigs, says Egale and SMM have brought to his attention some lyrics of artists he books. They re telling me the song is an example of homophobia, but I translate it as something else. In Jamaica being homophobic is almost a law. Hines is only marginally overstating the reality. Hundreds of attacks on gays and lesbians, many involving mob violence, and at least three deaths have been reported since the beginning of the year. In April, Amnesty International called on Jamaican authorities to send a clear message that discrimination against sexual minorities will not be tolerated after two incidents involving mob violence against gays in Kingston. If there s been an official response, Jamaican authorities are loath to share it with NOW. Repeated calls, e-mails and faxes sent to the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa and the consulate in Toronto went unanswered. Hines is sympathetic, but at the same time he can t shake a feeling: It seems that they re just targeting the dancehall community. There are tons of hiphop artists that call people faggot in songs. And they re not going after them. It s a familiar argument, one that was made by local activist Valerie Smith in her efforts last year to have the Ontario Human Rights Commission declare songs with misogynist lyrics hate rap. The stumbling block there is that women are not an identifiable group under the Criminal Code. Gays are. Used to be that SMM would get problem acts to sign a declaration known as the Reggae Compassionate Act. The groups would promise to zip it on the homophobic material in return for avoiding SMM s calls for boycotts, handcuffs and visa denials. One Love and all that. Some acts signed, others recoiled. Problem is there was nothing keeping the bands honest back home. In 2004, a sobering blow came to those who thought that agreements like the Reggae Compassionate Act might have lasting traction in Jamaica. Brian Williamson, a founding member of the Jamaican Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG), was found brutally murdered. While it s still a matter of some debate whether this was in fact a hate crime, this ultra-public gay-positive force died by violence. Says SMM founder Akim Larcher, What we ve seen is that many of these artists have denied signing, claiming the alleged forgeries are part of the gay agenda. Listeners and concert-goers are often encouraged to revel in derisive singalongs punctuated by exhortations like: Battyman fi dead! Poop man fi drown. Hang chi chi gal wid a long piece of rope. Tek a bazooka and kill batty-fucker. I m dreaming of a new Jamaica, come execute all the gays. Unnecessary translations notwithstanding, the recurring gist of many of these frequently cited tracks is that the sodomite at large (including bowcat bwoys that go down on females) should beware divine wrath right here on earth. To lesser extent, says Larcher, that same homophobic environment exists here in the Caribbean and African communities. These artists remain symbols of hate against the LGBT communities. Beenie Man In the past, artists like Beenie Man and Buju Banton have tried to play both sides of the pond by issuing denunciations of violence against any human being. But one would gather from their continually catalogued concert ramblings that gays and lesbians fall outside of that definition. Until these artists take a public stand in the Caribbean, specifically denouncing violence against gays and lesbians, we don t think they should be allowed into Canada, says Larcher. Buju Banton Case in point is Buju Banton, often heralded as a changed man after penning the anti-gay anthem Boom Bye Bye in the early 90s at the age of 15. But just a few weeks ago, despite calls for his performance to get the hook, he busted out lines from that track at the Guyana Music Festival at the urging of the crowd. Meanwhile, surprise! The offensive material can be accessed online, interestingly enough, on the Jamaica Tourist Board website, boasting that Jamaica is one of the most special places on earth. Immerse yourself in our culture as diverse as our people. And this gem: Reason with a Rastafarian about life, love or politics. Copyright 2007 BadGalsRadio ~ I-riginal 100%GalBassed RooticalTruth. Number of people living with HIV According to estimates from the UNAIDS/WHO AIDS Epidemic Update (November 2007), around 30.8 million adults and 2.5 million children were living with HIV at the end of 2007. Number of people infected during 2007, and the number of deaths During 2007, some 2.5 million people became infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS. The year also saw 2.1 million deaths from AIDS - a high global total, despite antiretroviral (ARV) therapy, which reduced AIDS-related deaths among those who received it. The number of deaths probably peaked around 2005, and has since declined only slightly. How people become infected with HIV Globally, around 11% of HIV infections are among babies who acquire the virus from their mothers; 10% result from injecting drug use; 5-10% are due to sex between men; and 5-10% occur in healthcare settings. Sex between men and women accounts for the remaining proportion around two thirds of new infections. Young people affected by HIV and AIDS Around half of the people who acquire HIV become infected before they turn 25 and typically die of the life-threatening illnesses called AIDS before their 35th birthday. By the end of 2005, the epidemic had left behind 15.2 million AIDS orphans, defined as those aged under 18 who have lost one or both parents to AIDS. These orphans are vulnerable to poverty, exploitation and themselves becoming infected with HIV. They are often forced to leave the education system and find work, and sometimes to care for younger siblings or head a family. In 2007, around 420,000 children aged 14 or younger became infected with HIV. Over 90% of newly infected children are babies born to HIV-positive women, who acquire the virus during pregnancy, labour or delivery, or through their mother s breast milk. Almost nine-tenths of such transmissions occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Africa s lead in mother-to-child transmission of HIV is firmer than ever despite the evidence that HIV ultimately impairs women s fertility; once infected, a woman can be expected to bear 20% fewer children than she otherwise would. Drugs are available to minimise the dangers of mother-to-child HIV transmission, but these are still often not reaching the places where they are most needed. HIV/AIDS around the world The overwhelming majority of people with HIV, some 95% of the global total, live in the developing world. The proportion is set to grow even further as infection rates continue to rise in countries where poverty, poor health care systems and limited resources for prevention and care fuel the spread of the virus. The chart on the right shows the distribution of people living with HIV around the world, according to 2007 data. High-income countries The total number of people living with HIV continues to rise in high-income countries, largely due to widespread access to ARV therapy, which prolongs the lives of HIV+ people. This increases the pool of HIV-infected people who are able to transmit the virus onwards. It is estimated that 1.3 million people are living with HIV in North America and 760,000 in Western and Central Europe. In these two regions, AIDS claimed approximately 33,000 lives in 2007. The rate of AIDS-related deaths has been cut substantially through use of ARV medicines. There is mounting evidence that prevention activities in several high-income countries are not keeping pace with the spread of HIV and that in some places they are falling behind. Such shortcomings are most evident where HIV is found mainly among marginalized groups of the population, such as drug users, immigrants and refugees. AVERT.org has pages about HIV and AIDS in the USA and in the UK, plus statistics pages covering many high income countries, including Australia, Canada and Western Europe. Sub-Saharan Africa The area in Africa south of the Sahara desert, known as sub-Saharan Africa, is by far the worst-affected in the world by the AIDS epidemic. The region has just over 10% of the world s population, but is home to 68% of all people living with HIV. An estimated 1.7 million adults and children became infected with HIV during 2007. This brought the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the region to 22.5 million by the end of the year. HIV prevalence varies considerably across this region - ranging from less than 1% in Madagascar to over 30% in Swaziland. HIV prevalence (the proportion of people living with HIV) appears to have fallen slightly in this region over recent years because the number of new infections is exceeded by the number of deaths each year. However, the total number of people living with HIV is still rising because of overall population growth. In sub-Saharan Africa, AIDS killed approximately 1.6 million people in 2007. Average survival in the absence of treatment is around 10 years after infection. ARV drugs can dramatically extend survival, allowing many years of healthy life, but these remain unavailable to most Africans. Unlike women in most other regions in the world, African women are considerably more likely - at least 1.4 times - to be infected with HIV than men. There are a number of reasons why female prevalence is higher than male in this region, including the greater efficiency of male-to-female HIV transmission through sex and the younger age at initial infection for women. Eastern Europe and Central Asia The AIDS epidemic in Eastern Europe and Central Asia is rapidly expanding. Some 150,000 people were infected with HIV in 2007, bringing the total number of people living with the virus to around 1.6 million. Only a small proportion of HIV+ people in these areas can hope to receive ARV medication, so the AIDS death rate - which was around 55,000 in 2007 - is higher than it might otherwise be. Worst affected are the Russian Federation, Ukraine, and the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania), but HIV continues to spread in Belarus, Moldova and Kazakhstan, while more recent epidemics are now evident in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. It is now estimated that around 940,000 people are living with HIV in the Russian Federation. Asia Until recently it was thought that India was home to around 5.7 million people living with HIV - more than any other country in the world. In July 2007 this estimate was revised to between 2 million and 3.1 million, based on better data including the results of a national household survey. Because of the major revision of the Indian estimate, the number of people living with HIV in the whole of Asia is now thought to be substantially less than the figure published by UNAIDS in late 2006. The current estimate is around 4.8 million. National adult prevalence is still under 1% in the majority of this region s countries. However some Asian countries are very large and national averages may obscure serious epidemics in some smaller provinces and states. Although national adult HIV prevalence in India, for example, is below 1%, some states have an estimated prevalence well above this level. Other countries with large numbers of people living with HIV include China (650,000), Thailand (580,000) and Myanmar (360,000). North Africa and the Middle East The notion that this region has sidestepped the global epidemic - perhaps due to strict rules governing sexual behaviour - is not supported by the latest estimates, which indicate that 35,000 people acquired an HIV infection in 2007, bringing the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the Middle East and North Africa to an estimated 380,000. AIDS killed a further 25,000 people in 2007. Latin America and the Caribbean An estimated 1.8 million people are living with HIV in Latin America and the Caribbean, including the estimated 120,000 who became infected during 2007. Around 70,000 people died of AIDS in the same year. All the main modes of transmission exist in most countries, along with significant levels of risky behaviour - such as early sexual debut, unprotected sex with multiple partners and the use of unclean drug-injecting equipment. The largest HIV epidemic is in Brazil, where around 620,000 people are living with the virus, though the death rate has fallen due to widespread access to treatment. Adult HIV prevalence in Haiti and the Bahamas is more than 3% - higher than anywhere else outside sub-Saharan Africa. The future Future projections of the extent of the HIV/AIDS epidemic cannot be made with any precision; what happens next will depend on what action is taken. In some scenarios, governments and societies mount a very vigorous and wide-ranging response which recognises AIDS as much more than just a health issue, and so HIV prevalence eventually decreases; in other projections, good intentions fail to deliver anything more than short-term and fractured responses in the worst-affected countries, and the number of people living with HIV soars.1 What are needed to turn the tide are massive responses at the national and international level: People need to challenge the myths and misconceptions about human sexuality that translate into dangerous sexual practices. Work and legislation is needed to reduce prejudice felt by HIV+ people around the world and the discrimination that prevents people from coming out as being HIV positive. HIV prevention initiatives need to be increased, people across the world need to be made aware of the dangers, the risks, and the ways they can protect themselves. Condom promotion and supply needs to be increased, and the appropriate sexual health education needs to be provided to young people before they reach an age where they become sexually active. Medication and support needs to be provided to people who are already HIV+, so that they can live longer and more productive lives, support their families, and avoid transmitting the virus onwards. Support and care needs to be provided for those children who have already been orphaned by AIDS, so that they can grow up safely, without experiencing poverty, exploitation, and themselves falling prey to HIV. More information AVERT.org has many pages of national and regional HIV Could I have been infected with HIV? This is one of the questions we are most commonly asked. If something has happened, and you want to know if you re at risk, check out our page about how you can/can t become infected with HIV. I think I may need to be tested for HIV Firstly try not to panic. A test is almost always the best way to put you mind at rest, but the majority do come back negative. If you ve only recently had a risky sexual (or injecting) encounter, then you might have to wait before you can have a test. It is generally best to wait at least 6 weeks before taking an HIV test, although waiting 3 months will give you the most reliable result. AVERT.org has a FAQ section on HIV testing which may be able to answer your questions for you. If you can t find the answer you re looking for there, then try these sites which also have information about HIV testing : Guide to HIV testing www.aidsmeds.com/lessons/HIVtests.htm HIV testing FAQs www.hivtest.org/ Or if you need to know where you can find a place in your area where you can be tested : Where can you get tested? (USA) www.hivtest.org/ USA and Canada AIDS/STD helplines www.thebody.com/hotlines.html Where can you get tested? (UK) http://www.fpa.org.uk/finder/ Anywhere else in the world contact your health-care provider, who will be able to tell you the nearest place where you can be tested. The test is usually free and confidential if you re not sure about this, just ask. Most countries also have a telephone helpline on which you can speak confidentially to people who will understand your feelings, and who will be able to give you the information you need confidentially. And remember: if you have to wait to have a HIV test - or if you have to wait to get the results - then do not have any unprotected sex during this time! I may have come into contact with HIV at work I ve been stuck by a needle I m a health-care worker and I m HIV+ AVERT.org has information for health-care workers, and further information about HIV at work and accidental exposure to HIV can be found here : Infected health-care workers (UK) www.dh.gov.uk/PolicyAndGuidance/ Post-exposure treatment (USA) www.aidsinfo.nih.gov/guidelines/ Post-exposure treatment (UK) www.aidsmap.com/en/docs/ I m worried I might have a sexually transmitted infection.
