Call it a super match: the world s top tennis players and chefs dished up outstanding fare at the official kickoff party for the U.S. Open and the fans were in heaven, especially after sipping some of the hippest rum cocktails in the world. The venue, for the ninth year in a row, was the W Hotel in New York. The lineup included, among others, tennis superstars Andy Roddick, James Blake, Jelena Jankovic and Lleyton Hewitt and guest chefs Ingrid Hoffman from the Food Network, Alfred Portale from the Gotham Bar rumellier Marcos Mercado at a tropical Rum Court. Ace, Love 40, Break Point and Mixed Doubles took on spirited new meaning as they were swooped up by the crowds. The cocktails were paired with dishes created by chefs Wilo Benet of Pikayo restaurant and Mario Pagan of Chayote restaurant, both in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Andy Murray reached his first Grand Slam final at Flushing Meadows on Sunday evening, beating world number one Rafael Nadal by three sets to one in New York. The Scot resumed the rain delayed semi-final leading by two sets but trailing by a break, and Nadal soon cut the deficit by winning the third set. But Murray recovered from a break down in the fourth set to win 6-2 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 6-4. The 21-year-old now faces four-time defending champion Roger Federer in Monday's final. Murray though pushed the Spanish world number one all the way, but the Wimbledon, French Open and Olympic champion battled through to pull a set back. Murray could have folded as Nadal was pumped up and on top form, but immediately he signalled he was not about to let it slip when he forced eight deuces on Nadal's opening serve of the set. Nadal then showed why he had won 54 out of his last 56 matches as he broke Murray to lead 2-1 and the writing looked on the wall, with the vociferous New York crowd backing Nadal strongly. However, Murray still stayed strong and at 2-3 down, after seeing Nadal save the last 15 break points against him, he finally let another one slip and Murray levelled at 3-3. Murray continued to do what almost everyone else on tour is unable to do - and match Nadal for power and stamina at the baseline, which brought about deuce on Nadal's serve at 4-5. A truly mind boggling point then went Murray's way after an extensive and power-packed baseline rally - which left Nadal with his hands on his knees and blowing hard in a unique sign of tiredness from the man who usually batters his opponents into submission. Just the one break point was needed and Murray converted to seal his fairytale in New York as he became the first British Grand Slam finalist since Greg Rusedski made the Flushing Meadows finale in 1997. Murray now has just under 24 hours to prepare for the biggest match of his life with a the final against Federer, but they way the Scot has been playing many will feel he has a chance. Lo svizzero, numero 2 del mondo, si qualifica per le semifinali degli US Open battendo 7-6 (5) 6-4 7-6 (5) il lussemburghese Gilles Muller in 2 ore e 26 minuti. E' stata una partita più complicata del previsto per il numero 2 del mondo contro un avversario, numero 130 del mondo ma che fu numero 59 nel 2005, che è stato la più grande sorpresa del torneo: passato attraverso le qualificazioni ha poi battuto uno dopo l'altro Haas, Almagro e Davydenko, i primi due rimontando da due set a zero sotto, e oggi ha fatto soffrire l'ex re del tennis. Ma Federer si è limitato al minimo indispensabile, giocando bene i punti importanti, in particolare quelli del tie-break. Lo svizzero centra così la sua diciottesima semifinale consecutiva in un torneo del Grande Slam, record che difficilmente sarà battuto, e ora dovrà vedersela con Novak Djokovic che ha battuto in quattro set Andy Roddick. Primo set equilibratissimo, Muller tiene molto bene il campo specialmente col servizio, e la prima palla break del match è a suo favore, sul 3-3, ma Federer la annulla con la prima di servizio. Il lussemburghese sul 6-5 deve però fronteggiare ben cinque set point, quasi tutti salvati col servizio, quindi alla seconda palla utile Muller forza il parziale al tie-break. Federer sale 4-1, si fa rimontare ma sul 5-4 in suo favore vince un bellissimo scambio chiudendolo con uno straordinario passante di rovescio, per qualcuno il suo colpo nettamente più debole. Altri due set point, Muller annulla il primo con la battuta ma sul secondo, su un altro passante di rovescio di federer, non tiene in campo la volée alta di rovescio. L'equilibrio continua nel secondo set ed è ancora Federer ad annullare la prima palla break sull'1-0 per il suo avversario. I due protagonisti tengono poi facilmente i propri servizi fino al 4-4 quando Muller si trova 0-40, annulla le prime due palle del 4-5 ma non può nulla quando Federer lo infila su un serve and volley suicida. Lo svizzero tiene poi la battuta intascando anche il secondo parziale per 6-4. Muller rischia già di perdere il servizio nel primo game del terzo set ma annulla una palla break con un ace. L'equilibrio continua per tutto il set ma sul 4-4 Federer ha ancora due occasioni per strappare la battuta al suo avversario mancandole. Altro tie-break quindi, nel quale sembra prevalere Muller, il lussemburghese arriva a condurre per 4-1 e per 5-3 e forse comincia a sognare un'altra grande rimonta, ma qui sbaglia un dritto perdendo il minibreak di vantaggio, Federer recupera sul 5-5, si procura un match point con un gran passante di rovescio e a questo punto è Muller a sbagliare il rovescio. Ecco come Federer rilegge la partita contro Muller: "Sapevo che Muller aveva battuto qui Andy Roddick qualche anno fa, e che aveva battuto Nadal a Wimbledon qualche anno fa. Conoscevo le insidie di questa partita, perché Muller gioca bene. Le condizioni dunque erano difficili, anche perché ti trovi di fronte un avversario che sta giocando con grande fiducia e con uno stato d'animo straordinariamente positivo.
