WBWC Ann Arbor Pedestrian Forum

WBWC Ann Arbor Pedestrian Forum

from recent posts tagged eli - blip.tv (beta) on October 19, 2009
Duration: 6454
We love walking down our tree-lined streets in Ann Arbor, along the Huron River and through our vibrant downtown. But as motorists we don't yield for pedestrians at crosswalks. We speed through residential neighborhoods. Why? Not all communities in America experience this problem. The Washtenaw Bicycling and Walking Coalition is hosted a pedestrian forum to explore this issue and engage our community around the topic of improving the pedestrian safety in Ann Arbor. We can have a community where we no longer feel invisible as pedestrians-- where motorists stop to allow children to cross the street. Residents voiced their concerns to city staff, and learned how Ann Arbor is currently addressing these issue. We are all a part of shaping the pedestrian vision for Ann Arbor's future. Panelists will included Susan Pollay, Ann Arbor DDA Director, Eli Cooper, Transportation Manager for the City of Ann Arbor, Pat Cawley, Senior Project Manager for the City, Kristen Larcom, City Attorney, Officer Patton, Ann Arbor Police Department, Carolyn Grawi from the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living, Robert Wagner, Director of Lurie Terrace and Rory Neuner, Urban Policy Specialist for the Michigan Environmental Council.

Michelle Yeoh Urges Congress to Help Stop Road Death Epidemic

For more info visit www.newsinfusion.com Washington, DC) Five million lives could be saved and 50 million serious injuries prevented over the next ten years, according to a report presented to Members of Congress today by international road safety experts. But to do so, world leaders must launch a Decade of Action to combat the growing global road death crisis. Actress and Make Roads Safe Campaign ambassador Michelle Yeoh, urged Members of Congress to join efforts to combat the world s fastest-growing and most neglected public health emergency. Yeoh, best known for her roles in the Hollywood hits Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Memoirs of a Geisha, urged the US government to play a leading role at next month s first-ever UN Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Moscow. The US has made progress on road safety, but of course much more needs to be done, Yeoh said. The United States can be a world leader on road safety, to save lives both at home and abroad in a Decade of Action. Having traveled to Africa, Asia, and Latin America to see the world s dangerous roads, Yeoh added, "I am known for my action movies and doing my own stunts, but some of my most frightening moments have been crossing a dangerous road with children who are just trying to get to school. We must act now to save our children."
