Manly-man sports vlogger J.F. Kurtagh at ZuDfunck made this wee tour of vlog sites in honor of the Node Trip. Either sports enthusiasts are kinder and gentler nowadays, or I just assumed sports enthusiasts weren't so kind or gentle in the first place. Hmmm. It's the latter. Damn. I love it when my world-view gets wrinkled. Thanks, Zud! I'm gonna go to a football game this weekend in your honor.

Graham's good presentation at VlogEurope! on storytelling made me cut this movie nearly in half. It became a better commercial for Max & Alex, iPod and FireANT. Rule: if the pix / audio don't advance the story, cut 'em. Ask: "What / where is the story?" until it hurts. If your gut sinks every time you get to a particular cut, fix it.

About half way through this Mother Jones Radio podcast you'll hear an analysis of something I heard about but found unbelievable during this past summer's road trip to Montana and back: that states are selling their toll roads. At the toll just this side of Chicago, the booth operator told me the Chicago Skyway had been sold to an Australian company. I'm, like, "Yeah. Right. Thanks." Damn. It's true. Indiana, Illinois and Virginia have done it. Pennsylvania's got its Turnpike on the block. The implications are enormous. From the Mother Jones site: "...Some American highways are being sold off to the highest bidder, leaving multinationals and Wall Street firms sitting happy on piles of cash. Interstate 90 in Indiana, the Chicago Skyway, and the Pocahantas Parkway in Virginia are now privately owned -- which roads are next? We talk to Mother Jones' Dan Schulman and trucker advocate Todd Spencer of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association."[source] Tags: Faux Press Road Node 101

What do vloggers do when they get together? They watch Ze Frank. One moment that moved me was KellyBelly as she watched her video being watched. That pain is not unfamiliar. _____ POST NOTE: Testing Blip.tv's cool new interface. Let's see how direct cross-posting goes. Wasn't happy with the translation of html from Blip to Blogger. Blip's WYSIWYG text interface crashed when you tried to type in links. Hand-coding links in plain text, found that linebreaks didn't hold so the text came out the other side to Blogger as one big paragraph. Fingers crossed :)

Arrived outside Omaha following Off-the-Grid Geek camp utterly exhausted and without land-legs. Stumbling from the car, this man loped to hold open the door. Invited him to visit. He did. I had one small tomato, some salt & pepper chips, a loaf of bread, and the left-over Scotch whisky Scott Prentice had offered as a parting gift. Eric and I ate together. It seemed a feast. Early on, Eric told me he's an ex-con, but I knew that already from the tattoos. He made me feel beautiful. Sweet Eric made me the beneficiary of an air mattress he had but did not use. It was marvelous to sleep not on the ground. thank you, Eric. You're an angel. Bill Streeter: thanks for the well-timed couch. Tags: Faux Press Road Node 101 Movlog

Was terrified when I learned Road Node 101 had landed in Deadwood, S.D. at the height of the Sturgis Rally in the midst of half a million bikers. Didn't take long to get excited at the prospect of experiencing the biker phenom firsthand. The charmingly disarming Gary Landeen started the aclimitization process nicely as he prepared to attend a white plate dinner by inviting Scott Prentice and me to help tweak his biker tuxedo for the event. Play 3gp Version of Richard BF on the subject of competition. I love Richard BF. This links to Richard's thoughtful meditation on vlogging. He's so darned smart. So darned clever. Richard maintained the Videoblog Wikipedia entry for years. A thankless job. And now others have taken the job over. Check out the vlog entry's checkered history. Anyway, thanks Richard, for having done this for so long. It's now in the hands of others outside the vlogosphere. Perhaps better handled there. You tell me. Tags: Faux Press Road Node 101

August 29, 2006

Road Node hit Deadwood, SD, just in time for the Sturgis Rally that roared down the road a'piece, and an evening's worth of vloggersation with Scott Prentice, the godfather of South Dakota vlogging. A bit about road technique. Huge road challenge: keeping tools handy. Solution: the tool belt with cellphonecamera (Nokia 6682) and iPod/Griffin iTalk mic/speaker in tow. Camera optional but always nearby. The advance recording of sound effects / sound tracks independent of footage - used to shape the footage sometimes, holds. Record a bunch of sound tracks before rolling a single foot, apart from arrivals. Arrivals are nearly always captured. Four days without access to electricity at the Grotto was challenging and even today, cellphone footage from the way-off-the-grid action awaits attention. Have finally bluetoothed the things to the mac, which is full-to-the-brim with footage and sound tracks. Once in situ, I tend to try to reduce the actual amount of time spent filming to a bare minimum. Lifepractice tells me that being in the moment builds knowledge knowledge the whole works folds up to a 2" x 6" x 8" package. So, that's the tech report from Road Node 101, folks. Node 101 Weekend was a celebration of what we've accomplished together in the last two years. "Pay more," is a saying I'm fond of saying. Node 101 pays more. In return, I support them. It's a marriage of aesthetics. SpinFlow will have a debut soon. I'll let you know when they feel the site is ready to fly. Notes About Road Node 101. So much to say. First, some business. Node 101 contributed $300 toward Node 101 / Meet the Vlogger / Vlogger Meetup events expenses from what it earned producing Vloggercon. I've a responsibility to report how it was spent. $150 was spent on food for the Minnesota Vlogger Meetup. Video (including what we got for our money) here. Still await an invoice from Adam to ship to Schlomo for his records. While I told Adam that Node 101 would cover expenses up to $200 / event I hadn't really intended to spend this much on that one evening. Oops. That said, you'll see that Crow River Coffee made a pretty incredible spread for the 5 folks (not including the kids) that showed up. $150 was spent to feed folks at Off-the-grid Geek Camp.
