"I just play and take whatever I get," says Flynn, a soft-spoken California native with an extensive history of playing in clubs, coffee houses and bars--and on the Pearl Street Mall. "I don't believe in begging. I just don't believe in that. It bothers the businesses, it bothers the musicians, it bothers everyone on the Mall. You shouldn't be come up to and asked for things, you know, unless it's a friend or something." Before singing and strumming a Van Morrison cover tune, Flynn explains that he's wary of any restrictions that could eventually lead to entertainers being banned from the Mall, but is critical of zealous panhandlers--often of questionable need. Avoiding the sometimes-rowdy courthouse section mid-Mall, and the often-boisterous downtown Boulder nightlife, he plays days on the west end, never putting patrons on the spot, he says. After all, he knows what that's like. "They ask me for money out of my case," says Flynn, referring to aggressive solicitors. "Sometimes I give it to them, but that's hard to do, you know, because I'm playing myself for money and for the people. I'll play even if people don't give me money." - by P.W.
