UNICEF: Goodwill Ambassadors' CRC PSAs: Behind the Scenes

UNICEF: Goodwill Ambassadors' CRC PSAs: Behind the Scenes

from Metacafe - Today's Videos by Metacafe on November 20, 2009
Duration: 116
NEW YORK, USA, November 2009 UNICEFs Goodwill Ambassadors have joined in commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) by appearing in public service announcements meant to draw attention to the groundbreaking international human rights covenant. The CRC turns 20 on 20 November. In the 30-second PSAs, the prominent UNICEF supporters champion the myriad causes that are important to them. Actress and activist Mia Farrow, for example, speaks about the right of children to be protected from violence. Classical pianist Lang Lang addresses the right to play. And supermodel and businesswoman Claudia Schiffer talks about the right to quality education. The ambassadors hope they can help turn the worlds attention to the CRC, a legally binding international treaty that has helped shape legislation, guided the work of non-governmental organizations and changed the lives of millions of children. http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/namibia_51570.html WINDHOEK, Namibia, 28 October 2009 A novel idea for children has become a reality, now that the Namibian Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration has set up an office in the maternity ward at Katutura State Hospital, the main public hospital in Windhoek. This UNICEF-supported effort is designed to ensure that every child born at the hospital receives a birth certificate. In Namibia, 81 per cent of women deliver their babies in a hospital, yet 40 per cent of Namibian children under the age of five lack birth certificates. Children without birth certificates are more vulnerable to abuse, trafficking and early marriage, and have less access to government services and schooling. In this case, the Ministry of Health is providing facilities and the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration provides the staff to register the children, said UNICEF Representative in Namibia Ian MacLeod. They have broken down the traditional barriers of ministries not working together in the best interest of kids, he added

This week, Animal Voices takes the show on the road to bring you a behind-the-scenes audio journey into the Peace Day celebrations at the Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary, sponsored by the Jane Goodall Institute. We get a rare listen into the sounds of the sanctuary (which is normally not open to the public), as Founder Sherri Delaney takes us through the sanctuary's various rooms and tells us about the day-to-day operation. We also hear from other volunteers who give us specific details about the primates that live there, including their likes, dislikes, and particularities. Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary provide a safe and permanent home for primates retiring from biomedical research, zoos, universities & private residences, or wherever there is a primate in need of a permanent home. Free Tibet Olympics Protest - Mount Everest

Free Tibet Olympics Protest - Mount Everest

from me on blip.tv (beta) on August 01, 2007
Duration: 133
Edited video from 4/25/07 protest by free Tibet activists on Mount Everest. The footage was captured from a live satellite streaming video. Three Tibetan independence activists, including one Tibetan-American, were detained by Chinese authorities Wednesday after demonstrating at Mount Everest's main base camp in Tibet, unfurling a banner reading "One World, One Dream, Free Tibet 2008" in English, and "Free Tibet" written in Tibetan and Chinese. The protest was held on the eve of the International Olympic Committee's announcement of the final Beijing 2008 Olympic torch relay route and as a Chinese team of climbers prepared a trial ascent of the mountain with the Olympic torch. The activists are currently being detained by China, who is refusing to give them access to US consular services.
