Data Deluge in the Petabyte Age by Andrew McCaskey The new Wired series (which I assume is the theme for the new issue of Wired Magazine, which I have not yet seen) is on the new world of the Petabyte - and how such barely imaginable volumes of data could become commonplace. Two years ago I was trying to explain the enormity of a Terabyte of storage to my wife. Now, for a few hundred dollars, that is available in a single drive at the local Best Buy or Walmart. The most disturbing article that is in the Wired series concerns the notion that the deluge of data will make the Scientific Method obsolete - that theories or models will no longer be necessary and that direct, empirical or behaviorial information is all that will be required to simulate or predict reality. Wrong. And wrong for the reason that it leads us to believe that what we observe is correct. The one thing about the scientific method, of theory, of models, is that they are provisional. A set of facts are observed, and the process repeated by others resulting in the same observations. The theory or model is constructed, and is good enough -until the next set of reproducible observations that don t quite match the predicted values. Then a change to the theory, an improvement of the model- or a wholesale new viewpoint that matches the observations predictive power. Petabytes of data are not going to remove the need for scientific method and observation - in fact, it will make it even more necessary. Old School Lighting by Andrew McCaskey The article on the Luxfer prism system from the 1880 s is of interest - if only to contrast the forms of architecture that were popular 120 years ago in business forms - with atriums, light and wind shafts and other features that were designed to use as much natural light and ventilation as possible. I wonder how much will really be incorporated in to practical designs as opposed to award winning designs ? My impression is that architectural ideas spread at glacial speed. This one might have the economic drivers to make it move a bit faster. 31 Days of the Dragon ====== 27 May - 03 Jun www.hardwaregeeks.com 28 May - 04 Jun www.geeknewscentral.com 29 May - 05 Jun www.geekzone.co.nz 30 May - 06 Jun www.thetabletpc.net 31 May - 07 Jun www.gearlive.com 01 Jun - 08 Jun www.gottabemobile.com The last contest has been announced - but there is still six chances to win. In other news, will the next iPhone be unlocked, sell for $199 with AT&T contract, cure malaria, wash your dishes, and defeat Kasparov? It will if you believe the rumors. We like to believe them. It's a happy fantasy world. Also, Wikipedia is broken. Where have you heard that before? Oh, yeah. Here.

Sadly, autonomous death-bots will make life unliveable, and that's assuming the Large Hadron Collider hasn't turned us all into strangelets. In happier news, the music industry is floating a plan to tax everyone who uses the Internet so they can prop up the decaying corpse of their business plan! What a fun day.

Recently, NPD Group reported that Apple s iTunes store moved into the number two spot in 2007 for music retail sales in the U.S. (Wal-Mart remained at number one.) Selling music has been tough ever since the RIAA took on Napster and Grokster, less downloaded music is being paid for, not more. Where does this leave Apple? In this podcast, PodTech s Jason Lopez and Kevin Edwards discuss why Apple has been relatively comfortable in an industry where the profit margin appears to be razor thin. THE RECORDING INDUSTRY lost a major ruling in Atlantic v. Brennan when a federal judge in Connecticut ruled that merely making music available to other users is not evidence of copyright infringement. The judge also found that no proof of infringement was supplied by the record companies that brought the suit. With two of three findings going to the defendant, the case was thrown out. GOOGLE suffered a 7% drop in ad clicks from December to January and a .3% drop year over year according to comScore. Clicks also declined 7% between November and December. Wall Street responded to the news by hammering down Google s stock by as much as 8% during trading on Tuesday. While the company has not verified comScore s findings it did officially report substantially slowed growth during the fourth quarter. The cause may be any number of factors, from a tightening economy to increased success in battling click fraud. CBS reported a 15% decline in Q4 revenue and flat ad revenue due to slowdowns in TV and radio. Les Moonves said that the company would cutback on pilot expenditures, calling them vastly overrated. He also tried to ease concerns about the slowing TV business by saying that Network TV will always be a must-buy for advertisers. (Maybe.) In other TV-slowdown news, DISH saw a 76% decline in subscriber gains during Q4. APPLE announced that iTunes has become the number two music retailer in the US, trailing only Wal-Mart in music sales during 2007. The store has 50 million customers and has sold 4 billion songs to date. The iTunes juggernaut continues. THE WGA ratified the new contract with the AMPTP with 93% of members voting to approve the deal. The contract is retroactive to February 13th and will be in effect until May 2, 2011. And the focus shifts to SAG. NBC UNIVERSAL will soon close the beta period for NBC Direct. The download service will officially launch sometime this quarter, though no specific date has been announced. NBC Direct will offer automatic copy-protected downloads of top NBC shows, including The Office and Conan O Brien. Let s hope they fulfill the promise of Mac support in a reasonable time frame. ESPN will offer substantial online coverage of its first Masters tournament. Live streaming of the event will be offered to the handful of people that can actually access ESPN360.com. For the rest of us, video exclusives will be posted on Masters.org and live look ins will be available on ESPN.com. There will be blogs, live audio updates, chats and pretty much anything else you an imagine. Except, of course, access to ESPN360. Get the full story at http://www.Media30.com.
