Pascal's War Pascal took a photo of me tonight where I'm wearing my black Che Guevara T-shirt. Pascal is twelve. He mashed together the above video. But it's part Pascal, too. There's video in there he filmed. There's editing he blended, cut, mixed, transposed, matched to music. The last time one of our twelve-year-olds tried it, he got crucified and castrated in public by the American haters. When we think of Americans. now, we see, we hear, what we know of America are the haters. Stalkers. It was my fault. I should never have allowed that boy to have been publicly exposed. Let alone humiliated. I am to blame. Not him. This is why I am so loathe to put what they do and who they are into a public arena. They get hurt. When I do do it, I do it MY way, or not at all. I should have done what I normally do (be fucking intransigent) which is circle the wagons. I let that child be in a destructive situation where he didn't have a chance. I do not CARE how he made his video. He made one. It is something. That child rarely speaks (I have two like that, and when they're all angry with me, they're all like that). He went into the deep silence of cocoon a long time ago. He was only beginning to peek out. And then he was smacked around. By an adult. He is now back in the cocoon and it is my job to try and tempt him out. But what happened to him is my fault. 1.) I know Americans. I know how they enjoy hatred. 2.) I should have said NO -- this child is too vulnerable -- and my lack of supervision, here, cannot be rationalized because I am damn well-aware of the cyber-stalker who can't peel his focus from us because we are the reason for his existence. He feeds on hate and the sound of his own voice. I deeply regret allowing any of the guys to have had anything to do with that website. I am told that one of our guys, Eavan, had asked to have his writing removed. But I am also told it has not been done. It. Will. Never. Happen. The boy who made the above video -- Pascal's War -- is and has been for a while, now, an individual in full revolt. Which is why I brought him to Bolivia. Which is in full revolt. And where Pascal shot, mashed, and edited his video. In a series of hotel rooms. As a video, it's conflicted. That is an observation. Not a criticism. We don't allow comments at Blip TV . 1.) Our cyber-stalker, we know who he is, he knows who he is, would blah-blah-blah his little tempter tantrums and we've heard all of them before. 2.) We do not really care what you think, or what Stalker thinks, and even the death threats Stalker makes have become dull and ordinary. 3.) The chances of my sacrificing another twelve-year-old to castration are not good. Pascal would fight back with every fiber in his soul -- often an amazing set of fireworks -- and I'd rather not go there. This is a kid everyone under the sun has washed their hands of. Because when he talks revolt, he means it. If he says he's going to tear your face off, he will. You can point out all the consequences to Pascal, and he will look you right in the eye and say: so what. Schools, families, treatment centers, and institutions have all kicked him out. Of course, they tried drugging him into submission. But Pascal has serious allergies to so many drugs, it limits their options. Ritalin almost killed him. Pascal has opposed everything and everyone. Judges. Doctors. Teachers. Parents. Any authority figure whatsoever. Pascal is going to do whatever the fuck Pascal wants to do which is always the opposite of what everyone else wants Pascal to do. My image of Pascal is his driving a convertible down from the curving Hollywood hills at 120mph and throwing used whiskey bottles out of the car. So I have taken him into the heart of what is essentially a war. Santa Cruz, Bolivia, is north of La Paz. Last night we attended a riot. A real riot with rioters and burning cars and buses and guns and military police and tear gas. Pascal with camera. Clicking away. He says he wants to be a war photographer, now, and I believe it. "But it's cock-sucking dangerous out there," he said. No shit. I have never seen him either flinch or seem afraid. Fear just never registers and you might make the mistake of assuming it does not exist anywhere in him. This would be wrong. He's just never met his challenge. There are two sides to this war. There's the American side which pays thugs to fight by proxy. They want the oil companies and gas resources to be owned and operated by American corporations. This is essentially a corporation war versus an Indian population (a majority of the people) who would like to have a share of that pie because they just happen to be the poorest people in South America. So the fight is on. The American side likes to characterize itself as the revolutionaries. This is pig shit. So they riot and tear up the town. They also shut towns down with barricades and roadblocks where entire neighborhoods can't get out to buy things like food. This is going to be a long battle. The Americans will pump in a lot of money to pay the thugs. Up close, it's real obvious who is who. Even Pascal gets it. "These guys burning cars are not revolutionaries," he tells me. "The Indians are the revolutionaries." "Economics usually has a lot to do with any war," I tell him. That the "rebels" can be on what he thinks is the wrong side has made a huge impression. "I don't even know Harry Potter. I don't even know who he is. Will you read the book to me." It is a huge step in a direction. I can't say it's the right direction. I can't say I will teach him to read. But I will try. "I won't keep it a secret," I said. "Why not, Tim. I need you to." "There are too many people -- some of the guys, too -- who think you are stupid, and I don't want you to hide books. To learn to read them, we will have to work on it together.
