Civilianism #61 / Protest is Patriotic
from CIVILIANISM July 03, 2008
Do you consider yourself patriotic? Yes or no, you will want to listen to this. Protesting is one of the most patriotic things you can do, especially considering the way Congress is giving away our rights on a weekly basis, all to buy a little so-called safety. That s the excuse for the [...]

How to apply for Republican National Convention blogging credentials
from The UpTake December 04, 2007
So you want to be a blogger at the Republican National Convention in September. Congratulations, you re special . That s the term the RNC is giving independent bloggers that is bloggers who aren t employed by a legacy media company such as a TV station, newspaper or magazine. If you happen to be a blogger for the legacy media, then the pathway to getting credentials is the same as in any year. You apply to the non-partisan Congressional media galleries. These galleries are run by the House of Representatives and are the folks who credential media for covering Congress. But if you re special ( a weekly newspaper, independent blogger or college media) then you have to go through the Republican National Convention. And despite the RNC s announcement that they want to include bloggers, they ve indicated that conservative bloggers are going to get preference. So how do you apply? Here are the details straight from the RNC s Fall Media Walk-Through book: The appropriate editor or news director of the organization should aply, in writing, on the organizations letterhead on behalf of the individual who wishes to cover the convention. A recent copy of the publication or online content featuring the work of the said reporter should be included with each letter. Correspondence should be addressed to: Special Press Credentials 2008 Republican National Convention PO Box 75428 Saint Paul, Minnesota 55175 Application materials and any questions regarding the Special Press Credentials can also be submitted electronically to: Special Press (651) 467-2654 special_press@GOPConvention2008.com Work Space Those accredited with Special Press Credentials may use the Press Filing Center in the Saint Paul RiverCentre to file stories. Seating Special Press Seats will be assigned by the COA (That s the RNC s Committee On Arrangements ) Press Filing Center The Press Filing Center serves the needs of media individuals and organizations that do not have assigned work space in the convention complex. Electrical outlets, tabled work stations and hookups for laptop and other portable computers will be available. Application Dates and Deadlines December 10 online application is available via the House Radio/TV Website (my note that s for the legacy media, not the special bloggers) February 1 - deadline for applying for work space and/or broadcast space (my note again for the legacy media) April 15 deadline for applying for credentials Internet Alley A limited number of credentialed bloggers and media organizations with online, interactive operations will be able to showcase their convention coverage in what is known as Internet Alley, which will be located in the Saint Paul RiverCentre. (My note the RiverCentre is next to the Xcel. You re three flights of stairs and about 100 yards from the convention floor) Organizations should apply for space in Internet Alley through the same entity they would apply for credentials and work space. (For example, an online component of a daily newspaper would apply for Internet Alley space through the Daily Press Gallery.) In applying for work space, media organizations should specify their separate requests for a presence in Internet Alley. COA will coordinate with the Networks and Congressional Galleries on allocation and assignment of spaces in this area.

Bloggers Welcome At RNC, Protesters Must Wait
from The UpTake December 04, 2007
iPod/Quicktime Download Bloggers and new media are welcome at the Republican National Convention next September, but Republicans are not exactly rolling out the welcome mat for protesters. On Monday, several members of the RNC organizing committee said they want bloggers to attend the RNC. This, as they met with about 500 media representatives from all over the world at the site of next year s convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. More than a thousand media types are expected to cover the RNC. Thousands more are expected to protest outside the Xcel Center during the convention. Those coordinating the protests would like to file for permits now instead of waiting until April as the city of St. Paul requires. Minnesota s Governor Tim Pawlenty, who is a Republican, was asked if he would intervene for the protesters so they could have time to plan just like the Republicans have time to plan. The Governor couldn t hold back a fleeting wry smile. I think six months is plenty of time to plan a protest . The UpTake s Mike McIntee shows us what the media saw when they came to St. Paul and takes you to the podium so you can see the Xcel center just like the Republican Presidential nominee will. Related Coverage: How to apply for Republican National Convention blogging credentials Ethics of press accepting food from the RNC Since the question of the ethics of taking food/gifts from the RNC has been raised (like it should be) I ll disclose the only food I had at this was a bite of the cupcake as part of the demonstration part of this story. I didn t go to the big dinner the RNC had for visiting journalists or take one of the goodie bags they handed out Mike McIntee

St. Paul Police: no protest pens at RNC Convention
from The UpTake October 30, 2007
iPod/Quicktime file As the RNC Presidential Convention approaches many questions have been raised regarding the access and legal framework of demonstrations. During a forum at St. Thomas University last week citizens were able to ask questions of St. Paul Police leadership. Many members of the peace community were present. The focus of the forum was on community policing and civil disobedience. Assistant Chief Matthew Bostrom, in charge of RNC Convention affairs, did the bulk of the speaking and set the bar high for himself and his office, saying that access will not be limited to pens for demonstrations and that the Secret Service would not take over security around the city. The RNC Welcoming Committee, the most organized anarchist and anti-authoritarian group protesting the upcoming RNC Convention did not attend the forum. An explanatory hand-out cited historical police abuses and that authority belongs to the people, not the police . Report: Kyle Potter Production: Kyle Potter and Noah S. from The UpTake October 23, 2007
iPod/Quicktime file [Part of a continuing story here at The UpTake about the development of the 2008 RNC] What happens when cities with Democratic administrations host Republican conventions? Will they work as hard to be gracious hosts as they would if the Democrats were coming to town? And what about planning for all those protesters? Minneapolis Democratic mayor R.T. Rybak describes a phone call that took place in the days just before the Republicans awarded the convention to Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Transcript of video after the break (more )
