News Roundup -- More Oil Not Solution to High Oil Prices
from HeadlinerNews Roundup May 17, 2008
This week, the price of oil jumped to a new high again. Now at $128 dollars a gallon, the increases show no signs of slowing. Even the announcement that the Saudi's would increase production by a moderate 300,000 barrels a day did little to slow the increase.President Bush, in the middle of a Middle East trip, met with King Abdullah to discuss how the price of oil was hurting the U.S. economy. He noted that we still had untouched reserves in the U.S. that were under disputed protection by federal environmental rules.Treasury Secretary Paulson talked about a stabilization of the economic and financial markets despite the continued rise in energy prices. A lot of issues here and certainly a good topic for the round-up!

Cement - A Dirty Business
from KQED's QUEST Science Radio Podcast April 08, 2008
Thought California has consigned coal-burning to the scrap bin? Think again! California has 11 coal-fired power plants, all used to heat limestone into cement making us one of the biggest cement-producing states in the country. In addition to cement, these kilns produce 95% of the state's airborne mercury pollution and 2% of its greenhouse gas emissions. Mostly, they've slipped under the radar of regulators, but that is changing fast.

Sunrise Powerlink Helps San Diego's Power Needs. SupportSunrise.com
from Brainstorming, Creativity and Innovation Software February 21, 2008
http://supportsunrise.com/ USA Today: Stirling Energy takes on the solar power challenge, January 2008. When the sun breaks through the clouds here, solar dish No. 0 springs to action. Like a giant sunflower, the mirrored face of the 40-foot dish will follow the sun continuously from east to west throughout the day, generating electricity for 10 to 15 homes. The dish is a prototype for 70,000 that a small Phoenix company hopes to plant on two 7,000-acre solar farms in the California desert over the next seven years. SupportSunrise.com

A New Era of Edisons. The Gulf Stream Revisited.
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) February 17, 2008
America s earliest settlers first documented the power of the Gulf Stream. Christopher Columbus battled the current as he made his way to the Caribbean in the late 1400 s. Ponce De Leon called it the river in the ocean during his 1513 voyage to Florida in search of the fountain of youth. It was Thomas Edison who first thought to harness the Gulf s energy in the 19th century. Lack of technology prevented any real success. But now a new era of Edisons are revisiting the power of the Gulf Stream. Just 15 miles away from the river in the ocean , a team of researchers at Florida Atlantic University in Dania Beach are developing an underwater turbine that can turn the current of the Gulf Stream into enough energy to power 1/3 of the State. While there are similar efforts underway in San Francisco Bay and New York s Hudson River, the Gulf Stream initiative would be the first to tap the ocean s energy. And if it works, the 1.8 billion acres of America s Outer Continental Shelf could be the next frontier of renewable energy. Eco-Beat visited Florida Atlantic University to speak with Rick Driscoll, director of the Center of Excellence in Ocean Energy Technology, and the mind behind this new technology.
