BERLIN - Democrat Barack Obama, who has vowed greater consultation with American allies on major foreign policy issues, was auditioning that role Thursday in a meeting with conservative German Chancellor Angela Merkel. A spokesman for the pragmatic Christian Democrat leader, who nixed plans by the Obama campaign for an outdoor speech at the once-divided German capital's highly symbolic Brandenburg Gate, said the two had "very open" and wide-ranging talks. Merkel and Obama discussed foreign-policy issues including Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Middle East peace process, spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said in a statement after the meeting. Speech at Victory Column But Berliners are looking to Obama's speech in front of the Tiergarten's 226-foot high Victory Column as the highlight of his Germany stop. The speech has symbolic value because several U.S. presidents — including John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton — made significant addresses in Berlin. Former German President Richard von Weizsaecker said the Obama event could help pave the way for a new trans-Atlantic relationship. Video Interview preview July 24: NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams previews his interview with Barack Obama. MSNBC "We have long believed that nobody in America is interested in our continent any more," von Weizsaecker told the Bild newspaper. "The appearance and the speech of Barack Obama are evidence that this preconception is false." I am sitting here on the eve of PodCamp Boston 3 with a head full of ideas and a belly full of excitement. It happens every year around this time. So, I fired up CastBlaster and recorded this episode of Managing the Gray. One of those straight from the brain to the microphone types of shows. I talk about the continued need to connect with people offline, the concept of being an expert (thanks again to Shel Holtz for the very complimentary call in) and on what is happening with The Advance Guard.

July 14, 2008; Volume 04, Number 23 Click here for a transcript of today's program Just a quick hello this morning, to let you know Japan Considered Podcasts will be arriving only sporadically for the next few weeks. Until mid-August. Due to my travel schedule. WiFi's not always available in the more remote parts of the country. Though I'll check in on Japan's domestic political and international news when I can. And put up a program when the WiFi connection is especially good. Sorry for the inconvenience. I should be gone by now. But just quick mention this week of three important topics. First, the effect of Japan's participation in the Toyako G- 8 Summit on domestic politics in Japan. Then, the Beijing meeting Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of the six countries trying to work out a peaceful resolution of North Korea's nuclear provocations. And finally, brief mention of former Kochi Governor Daijiro Hashimoto's announcement that he's decided to form a new national political party. Before, not after, the next general election. Interesting development I'll discuss all of these topics in more detail in the weeks and months to come. So, stay tuned, and continue to send your comments and suggestions for the program to me at RobertCAngel@gmail.com.

SelectPlusIran's President Backs Stronger U.S. RelationsIran's President Backs Stronger U.S. RelationsThe Associated PressIran's president said that the country would consider a U.S. request to set up a diplomatic office in Tehran. (July 13)Despite Iran's potentially provocative launch of test missiles it says can reach Israel and American bases in the Middle East, there are continuing signs of a diplomatic thaw. Iran's president said he's open to expanded relations with the United States.(NATS IN FARSI)MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD, IRANIAN PRESIDENT: "EXPANSION OF TIES IS CORRECT IN OUR OPINION AND WE WOULD WELCOME ANY PROPOSAL OR MOVE THAT HELPS TO THE EXPANSION OF TIES BETWEEN NATIONS." President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (ah-muh-DEE'-neh-zhahd) says Iran would welcome any proposal for the U-S to open an interests section in Tehran. Secretary of State Condolezza Rice has said that the U-S is considering that move. The United States broke diplomatic ties with Iran following the fall of the shah in 1979 and the hostage taking at the American embassy. (NATS IN FARSI)MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD, IRANIAN PRESIDENT: "WE DID NOT INSIST THAT THEY (THE AMERICANS) ENTER THE NEGOTIATIONS AND DID NOT SEND THEM A SPECIAL INVITATION CARD THROUGH EXPRESS MAIL EITHER. IF YOU (AMERICANS) COME TO NEGOTIATE WITH US IN A JUST SETTING, THAT WOULD BE ALL RIGHT. BUT EVEN IF YOU DO NOT COME FOR NEGOTIATIONS, OUR NATION WILL NOT BE HARMED." Ahmadinejad says Iran did not insist that the U-S enter negotiations, but it would be all right if the two countries met in what he called a just setting. The interests section would be a de facto embassy. It would give the United States a presence on the ground. One official says it could be used to communicate directly with students, dissidents and others without endorsing the government. Iran has operated an interests section in Washington for years. ___ ___, The Associated Press. What academics think about social mediaWhat academics think about social media
from NevilleHobson.com
July 09, 2008

Find more videos like this on PROpenMic Two weeks have gone by since Edelman s New Media Academic Summit 2008 in Chicago, plenty of time to digest some thinking and take a look at other people s thoughts as they ve posted them since the event. I discussed my own impressions in FIR #358 on June 30, overviewing the event, what the panels discussed and my thoughts about the issues everyone is grappling with regarding social media (which are broadly the same wherever you are, whether in the US or in Europe). For your convenience, I ve extracted that segment and it s here if you want to listen. About 8 minutes: A good starting point for other views would be the short video interviews taken at the conference venue by Robert French, one of the academic PR world s true innovators in not only widely experimenting with social media but also introducing it to hundreds of next-generation PR practitioners who experience it in the direct context of their (traditional) PR studies. The video embedded above (go here if you don t see it) is of five conference attendees from the academic community with their views on the event, what they expect to gain from it and what they think could have been different. A terrific written commentary in three parts on her impressions of the conference comes from Karen Miller Russell, who s also featured in the above video. Karen captures well some common views plus what I heard from some of the other participants - Part 1 (the global perspective), Part 2 (measurement) and Part 3 (general overview). Part I covered the panel discussion I was on. And that reminds me of something that has been bothering me since I read the summary of that discussion by the Edelman bloggers which quotes me saying that Journalism is dead. I was sure I never said that; indeed, I m sure I actually said Journalism isn t dead or something similar. Luckily, the panel discussion was videoed - as were all the sessions - and that video is now posted [link opens in new window or tab]. Around the 49-minute mark, you can see me saying that I don t agree with the idea that journalism is dead. A pity I can t embed that video here but at least you have a link to go see it there. So, I would summarize the Edelman New Media Academic Summit 2008 by saying that it was undoubtedly an event seen as valuable and worthwhile by everyone who participated, from the academic world as well as from the business side. Well organized by Edelman. I m glad to have been part of it. Related posts: Baseball for dummies Good to see you, Chicago 2008 - visit the author for more great content. ShareThis

In the CIPR workshop in London, showing everyone how easy it is to create a post with WordPress. Hot quote from participant Zena Martin: If you re not on Twitter, you re nowhere! Yes, we ve been looking at Twitter, too. (I ll be adding to this post later.) Update July 8. The workshop went well. A great group of participants, lots of questions and discussion. I think everyone went away with lots more questions in their minds. Certainly plenty of food for thought about blogging as a legitimate business communication tool and what it can do for building relationships. Here s the presentation I used during the workshop as a means to focus our discussion: | View | Upload your own What I found of greater value than the PPT was the discussion that resulted as we went through the content. But a PPT is a useful tool if it does help everyone take part in the discussion. About a third of our time was spent online which isn t part of the PPT. Note I haven t made the presentation available for download as the event was for the CIPR so I can t make it freely available (if any workshop participant would like a copy, just let me know).
