But if we read the-most-orthodox-of-them-all - the Westminster Standards - the theologians fail. Note the vague and confusing concept of the "visible church" in the Shorter catechism... "Q. 95. To whom is Baptism to be administered? A. Baptism is not to be administered to any that are out of the visible church, till they profess their faith in Christ, and obedience to him;[195] but the infants of such as are members of the visible church are to be baptized." Here the Shorter Catechism defines "visible church" to mean everyone in the world who claims to be Christian. But where is this "visible church"? If it's VISIBLE, then that means you've seen it, right? But when and how could you have seen "the visible church"? The word church simply means "assembly" or "congregation". So "the visible church [assembly]" would have to be an assembly of everyone who claims to be Christian in the world. And unless I've missed this gigantic gathering, I don't see why you'd believe in this concept of "the visible church." PS Lookup the 76 or so times the word church [Greek = ekklesia] occurs - you won't find the concept of "the visible church" anywhere. Instead, you'll read about local gatherings [churches] of believers - for example, at Corinth, Ephesus etc - who were knit together by the belief and love of the truth. And you'll read of Christ dying for His church - that is, the people who will assemble with Him in heaven. But the concept of every sprinkled or dunked person belonging to the "church" is foreign to the NT. Next up... The Shorter Catechism commands us to lay up riches on earth... Q. 74. What is required in the eighth commandment? A. The eighth commandment requireth the lawful procuring and furthering the wealth and outward estate of ourselves and others. Q. 75. What is forbidden in the eighth commandment? A. The eighth commandment forbiddeth whatsoever doth, or may, unjustly hinder our own, or our neighbor's wealth or outward estate My comment: Sorry to say that Christ and His apostles disobeyed the Shorter Catechism - because they didn't spend their time furthering their wealth. Interesting, to prove Q74/75, they cite 1 Tim 5:20 - which says, "But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.". Here's the verse in context... "1 Tim 5:5 But honor the one being the true widow, even having been left alone, who has set her hope on God and continues in petitions and prayers night and day.. 6 But the one living wantonly has died while living. 7 And enjoin these things that they may be blameless. 8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 9 Let a widow be enrolled having become not less than sixty years, the wife of one man, " Paul is saying, you must provide NOW for believing widows who you know - especially in your own family. And providing NOW for widows who you know certainly will not further your earthly wealth, will it? Paul is actually saying you should SHARE and REDUCE your wealth, NOT "procure and enlarge" it! Next up... The Shorter Catechism never defines faith clearly... It does say... Q. 86. What is faith in Jesus Christ? A. Faith in Jesus Christ is a saving grace, whereby we receive and rest upon him alone for salvation, as he is offered to us in the gospel. My comment: Ha! They define faith by the metaphors of "receiving" and "resting" - and never define the metaphors. Are they defining faith as PHYSICALLY "receiving and resting" Christ? We'll never know - they don't tell us what "receiving" and "resting" is! (And I also like how they never define what it means for Christ to be "offered") Thankfully, the Bible - unlike theologians - defines its terms. "But as many as RECEIVED Him, to them He gave authority to become children of God, to the ones BELIEVING into His name," (John 1:12). Receiving Christ is explained as BELIEVING the truth about Him. John 5 explains this too - to come to Christ or receive Him is simply to "believe His Words" (to have his "word abiding" in you)... "John 5 38 And you do not have His WORD ABIDING in you, for the One whom that One sent, this One you do not believe. 39 You search the Scriptures, for you think in them you have everlasting life. And they are the ones witnessing concerning Me. 40 And you are not willing to COME to Me that you may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from men; 42 but I have known you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have COME in the name of My Father, and you do not RECEIVE Me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive that one. 44 How are you able to BELIEVE, you who receive glory from one another, and the glory which is from the only God you do not seek? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father; there is one accusing you, Moses, in whom you have hoped. 46 For if you were BELIEVING Moses, you would then believe Me; for that one wrote concerning Me. 47 But if you do not BELIEVE his WRITINGS, how will you BELIEVE MY WORDS?" Anyone who has believed Christ's words, has received Christ. But the Westminster confusion continues to no end... Q86 says faith is a "saving grace" (see above), yet take a look at Q85... Q. 85. What doth God require of us, that we may escape his wrath and curse, due to us for sin? A. To escape the wrath and curse of God, due to us for sin, God REQUIRETH OF US FAITH in Jesus Christ, repentance unto life, with the diligent use of all the outward means whereby Christ communicateth to us the benefits of redemption. Question 85 says to obtain God's favor, He REQUIRES faith. So is faith now a "REQUIREMENT"? I thought Q86 said faith is a GIFT/GRACE? Can something be both a requirement I must do, and yet a gift! Strange! That would be like saying a kid is REQUIRED to get his own birthday presents, and yet the presents were actually gifts from his parents. I'd like to see how your friends/family respond when you REQUIRE of them to get their own presents for their birthdays. I'm sure they won't consider those presents "gifts". Contrast this with Scripture... John 17 1 Jesus spoke these things and lifted up His eyes to Heaven, and said, Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son may also glorify You, 2 as You gave to Him authority over all flesh, so that to all which You gave to Him, He may GIVE TO THEM everlasting life. 3 And this is everlasting life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent. God GIVES faith - the simple knowledge of God - to the prostitutes and tax collectors. All the while Presbyterian "reverends" are REQUIRING vague mystical "acts of faith" from their followers, God is GIVING simple clear understanding of the truth to His people.
