Thom Yorke Plays First Show With New Band at LA's Echoplex

Filed under: Concerts and Tours, News, Video Thom Yorke played a 90-minute set with his super group of a new band at Los Angeles' Echoplex Friday night, including material from 2006's 'The Eraser,' several new or previously unperformed songs, and even a Radiohead B-side, "Paperbag Writer," from 2004's 'COM LAG' EP. Yorke announced his new band lineup -- Beck drummer Joey Waronker, Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, percussionist and Forro in the Dark lead Mauro Refosco, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea on bass -- on the Radiohead blog Dead Air Space last week. Celebrities including Spike Jonze, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kim Gordon and members of Muse came to Friday's show, which the ever-modest Yorke played down as a "warmup show" on Dead Air Space. It's going to be "kind of a rehearsal," he wrote, and cautioned in an earlier post, "[W]e don't really have a name and the set will not be very long cuz ..well ...we haven't got that much material yet!"

Chad Smith Collaborates With Dick Van Dyke on Children's Record

Filed under: News, New Music, Exclusive, Holy Hell Some musicians take a break from one of the biggest bands in the world and go on vacation, party it up, lay low with the fam or do some good old fashioned housework. But not Chad Smith. As we've previously told you, the Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer has spent the group's hiatus doing not one but two other bands, or so we thought. It turns out doing the Chilis, Chickenfoot and his Meatbats combo still isn't enough. So, Smith tells Spinner he has yet another project in the works. "I'm doing a record with this woman, Leslie Bixler, that actually sings for my four-year-old's pre-school," he says. "It's so funny. It's very kid oriented. The record's coming out pretty soon and it's called 'Rhythm Train.'" To make things more interesting, the album has a pretty high-profile guest on it. "Dick Van Dyke's on it," Smith says excitedly.

Chad Smith Won't Use Will Ferrell Resemblance for Evil

"People come up to me in airports and they're asking for my autograph not because I'm the drummer for the Chili Peppers. They really think I'm Will Ferrell," he tells Spinner. "And I'm nice to these people. [I say] 'No, I'm not.' But they're like, 'I loved you in 'Old School.' You're so funny.'" Smith tried to address that confusion when he joined his Chickenfoot mates recently on the 'Tonight Show' by wearing an "I'm Not Will Ferrell" t-shirt. "I thought, 'What better way to dispel the rumor than on national television?' I had their little prop department make me a t-shirt," he says. It seems only fair that Ferrell get a chance to respond. We asked Smith if he'd send a shirt to his doppelganger, but he says fans may take care of that for him. "In Kansas City, this girl got up on stage and she had a picture of him as Ron Burgundy and it said, 'I am not Chad Smith,'" he says. "So funny. That's the first one I've seen."
