ATI Radeon 5970 is the Foot-long GPU Champ: HotHardware

ATI Radeon 5970 is the Foot-long GPU Champ: HotHardware

We sit down with our buddies from HotHardware, like we do every week, to talk graphic cards this time around. First on the list? ATI's gigantic Radeon 5970, which other than topping performance charts, also tips the price scales more than most cards. On the cheap end of the spectrum, we break down a new card from Zotac which is a low-power unit capable of fitting in well to a home theater without breaking the bank. Also, Adobe has added hardware acceleration support in its latest build of Flash, which is perfect for lower-end computers to play back hi-def Flash content. And, MSI has come out with a desktop that fits that mold really well, which has a touchscreen, Nvidia ION processor, and comes in at about $750. Check the show for the full details. ATI Radeon HD 5970 Video Card Presentation by David Cummings

http://www.tweaktown.com Last week a fellow called David Cummings, Director of Marketing for Desktop GPU from AMD, flew into Taipei and gave local press here in Taiwan a solid presentation on the new ATI Radeon 5970 dual GPU video that is being released today around the world. We headed on over to the AMD offices in Taipei and recorded the presentation for everyone to watch. It summarizes the new video card in AMD speak, but David does go into quite a bit of details, especially the UNLOCKED feature of the card that allows for some pretty insane overclocking. HD 4770 Review HD Version

To read the full review go to http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=8642Ever since the setback ATI suffered with the release of HD 2000 series, ATI has been on a technological innovation roll. First they released the world s first DX 10.1 compliant GPUs which were the HD 3800 series. This was also the world s first GPU manufactured using TSMC s (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) 55nm fabrication process. Meanwhile, the competing GPUs from Nvidia were still using the 65nm process. With the release of HD 4770 ATI is again at the forefront of innovation. This is the first GPU manufactured using TSMC s 40nm fabrication process. The 4770 won t set any performance records, but it will set new standards in the price/performance arena. These days AMD/ATI and Nvidia make their migration to a new design process by first making a low-end or a mid-range GPU on it. This enables them to refine the process and iron out the kinks before employing the process on expensive high-risk, high-end GPUs.AMD has been following the strategy of Multiply and Conquer since the release of the HD 3000 series. This means that they make small-sized, low-power GPUs instead of making a large monolithic GPU. AMD realizes that the sweet spot of GPU sales is not at the high end, but at the lower end. In order to compete at the high end, AMD/ATI uses two of these smaller chips to form a card like HD 3870-X2 and HD 4870-X2. This Sweet Spot Strategy allows them to make GPUs for both the low end and the high end.
